There were bidders from across Canada, as well as phone bidders from the United States, the UK, Norway and various parts of Asia, all attempting to land works by some of Canada s best artists. TOM (THOMAS JOHN) THOMSON G7 OSA 1877 ~ 1917 South Shore of Canoe Lake, Algonquin Park ESTIMATE: $180,000 ~ 220,000; SOLD FOR A RECORD $460,000 Both of Tom Thomson s oil on canvas works sold above estimates: South Shore of Canoe Lake, Algonquin Park sold for $460,000 and Sketch for Grey Day in the North went for $184,000. Bill Reid s gold sculpture The Raven and the First Men received a lot of publicity leading up to its sale. It was sold to a telephone bidder for $149,500. The work of Canada s female art masters has been rising in stature in recent years and they were well represented in this auction. Five paintings by Emily Carr in the auction exceeded six~figure bids.
