And what a year it has been. For us there have been new ideas, new adventures both at home and (for some) overseas new products and experiments. Of course, there has also been more of same old, same old, but with it all, we keep learning and developing our skills and knowledge. We hope the year has been similar for you. Staff development: Day of the Draw On 28 October, Katie, Nicole and Mike organised an event of Life Drawing above Ortem Café, Railway St. There were 3 models (nude) in the morning and a different 3 models (costumed) in the afternoon. As professional development, Sue suggested that the staff attend and brush up on their drawing skills. This proved to be a little challenging for most/all of us, as we were either out of practise or had never attended this type of drawing class before. We did our best as did the others of the 43 who attended. The standard of sketching skills was varied, but this just added to how interesting it was to view each others work. It was a very supportive environment and the organisers did a marvellous job of having this many people in the room and still able to see the models. Product Info Acrylics Atelier Interactive: Tradition + Innovation=Control The unique Interactive formula of Atelier Interactive Artists' Acrylic Paint gives you more creative freedom than any other paint - offering the speed and simplicity of an acrylic paint with the option of more blending time when you need it. Simply paint in your usual way for traditional fast drying acrylic painting techniques and if you want more time to blend, use a water sprayer to keep the paint open and workable for as long as you like; even dry paint can be reactivated with Unlocking Formula. The added control and choices Atelier Interactive gives, makes acrylic painting easier and more enjoyable than ever. Atelier Interactive is a professional quality artists acrylic; it is very highly pigmented and lightfast with a smooth buttery consistency that dries to a beautiful matte/satin finish. Atelier Free Flow: This paint utilizes the latest advances in pigment and polymer technology and it can be used as a stand alone acrylic paint or incorporated with a heavy bodied acrylic such as Atelier Interactive. Regardless of your application or technique, you ll find Atelier Free Flow just glides from the brush. It requires very little dilution to reach your preferred consistency. This ensures brilliant pigment strength is retained, painting light over dark colours is far easier, and the integrity of the paint itself remains strong and durable. Matisse Structure: This formula is a rich impasto acrylic paint that artists love. Available in 95 colours, Matisse Structure Formula paint is ideal for application with a brush or palette knife for striking textured effects. Matisse Flow: This formula has all the attributes of the Structure Formula; however, it has a thinner viscosity to allow free flowing brushstrokes or use through an airbrush (with minimal dilution). This allows the paint to be used for fine brushwork with or without water dilution. This paint gives a fine flow with a low-sheen finish and good levelling. Flow is ideal for mural work, canvas painting, geometrics, hard edge painting techniques and photo realism. Fine, detailed portrait painting, any art that requires intense smooth colours and watercolour techniques can be simulated quite easily. The intense, vibrant colours of both Structure and Flow acrylic paints cover the full colour spectrum, including several uniquely Australian colours. Only the finest quality pigments and ingredients are selected for the Matisse range of premium acrylic colours. All have the highest lightfastness rating of ASTM I or II and are archival quality so you can create with confidence knowing your artwork will stand the test of time. Each are fully compatible with the range of Matisse Artists Mediums working together to create a highly versatile painting system for all artists.
GOLDEN Heavy Body: These paints are known for their exceptionally smooth, buttery consistency. The Heavy Body palette includes the largest assortment of unique pure pigments in a 100% acrylic emulsion available to professional artists. These colors offer excellent permanency and lightfastness. There are no fillers, extenders, opacifiers, toners, or dyes added. Each Heavy Body color formula reflects the qualities of its pigment. Colors that tolerate a higher pigment load dry to a more opaque, matte finish. Colors that are more reactive and do not allow as much pigment loading tend to have a glossier, more transparent finish. Because Heavy Body colors contain no matting agents, the gloss of each color will be different. GOLDEN Fluid: These equal the intensity of the Heavy bodied paints but with an even, flowing characteristic useful for dry brush application, fine details, pouring, spraying (particularly when mixed with GOLDEN Airbrush Medium), staining techniques and many others. They are created by loading an acrylic polymer binder with concentrated levels of quality pigments for a wide selection of permanent and lightfast colors. No fillers or extenders are added to achieve the desired consistency, nor is the fluid quality achieved with additional water. GOLDEN Fluid Acrylics have the same pigment load as the Heavy Body Acrylics, but in a viscosity similar to heavy cream. Fluids allow for smooth flowing applications while retaining color intensity, tinting strength, film integrity, and adhesion. Fluids blend easily with all acrylic colors, and readily tint gels, mediums, gessoes and grounds. Fluid Acrylics are extremely versatile, and ideal for fine brushwork, glazing, staining, water media techniques and many more. Mix Fluid Acrylics with Airbrush Medium for airbrush application of artwork including textiles. GOLDEN High Flow: This is our newest acrylic paint that can go from brush to marker or from dip pen to airbrush and more. From fine lines to broad strokes, High Flow Acrylic has an ink-like consistency that lends itself to a wide range of techniques, including staining, levelling, calligraphy, and mixed media. Introduced as a replacement for GOLDEN Airbrush Colors in July of 2013, High Flow offers increased durability of dry paint and a larger palette of colors including Iridescent and Fluorescent colors, and more single-pigment colors that match the other GOLDEN color lines.
An Interview with experienced artist and staff member, Maryika Welter, about using acrylics in her Arts Practise. Maryika, what are your favourite paints and mediums to paint with? I like Atelier Free flow and Matisse Flow. Also, Atelier Gloss varnish and the new Thin medium (I think this one is flavour of the month for me). I also use quite a lot of Gesso.
