Community Arts Center - Danville, Kentucky Second Look Quilt Challenge 2018 JURY CRITERIA: The jurors will be asked to select works that demonstrate excellence in quilting, craftsmanship and creative re-purposing. ABOUT THE JURORS: A panel of three jurors with expertise in quilting, art and design, and storytelling will select the works for this exhibition. Since this challenge is as much about repurposing as it is about quilting, the jurors will each have different perspectives as they consider the entries. CALENDAR: May 1 May 15 May 26 May 31 July 28 Online/postmark entry deadline Notifications emailed Delivery of accepted works, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mailed works also due on 5/26 Opening reception 5:30-7:00 p.m. Pick up hand-delivered works, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ELIGIBILTY AND MEDIA: The Second Look Quilt Challenge is an exhibit about repurposing within the medium of quilting. The quilt top must be made from at least 75% repurposed materials. For this exhibit, repurposed means that the materials used must have had a previous intended function (i.e. an article of clothing, feed sacks, or curtains). Unused scraps from previous projects do not constitute repurposed materials. Quilts must consist of three layers the top, batting, and backing with a running stitch that passes through all three layers. New materials may be used for the batting and backing.

Tied quilts, glued quilts, and t-shirt quilts are not eligible and will not be accepted. Quilts must have been made since January of 2014 and not previously shown in any other Community Arts Center exhibitions. AWARDS: A Grand Prize of $150 will be awarded to one quilter. Merchandise awards will be given to First, second, and third place winners. Judges award ribbons will be given to individual quilters that best demonstrate the concepts of craftsmanship, color and design, and repurposing narrative. ENTRY: Digital upload and entry of artwork through our website www.communityartscenter.net is the preferred method of entry. If unable to apply online, works may be submitted on CD. If applying via CD, send all entry information to: Brandon Long, Creative Director, Community Arts Center, 401 W. Main Street, Danville, KY 40422. ENTRY FEE AND PROCEDURE: A non-refundable entry fee of $15 allows an artist to enter up to 3 quilts. The fee must be submitted with the completed registration form (either via the checkout procedure on the online uploader or a check through the mail). The entry fee does not cover the costs of shipping, which are the responsibility of the artist. All digital images submitted for jurying must have the following information included: 1. Title of work 2. Artist s Name 3. Date completed 4. Finished dimensions 6. Repurposed materials 7. A brief repurposing narrative the artist s explanation of the use of repurposed materials in their quilt. This may include the artist s personal relationship to the materials, (i.e. a family heirloom, an old work uniform), how the artist procured the materials used, or any other details that the viewer might find interesting. DIGITAL IMAGES: Each entry must include an image that shows the entire quilt as well as a detailed close-up of the quilt.

Digital Images must list all of the above criteria and must be submitted in the following format: Dimensions: File Format: At least 1000 pixels wide JPG Compression: Please size your image to be no more than 4 MB in file size. If entering by mail, CDs must be clearly labeled with the artist's name and address. CD entries require an additional $5 for handling as your images and information must be uploaded online by Arts Center staff. CDs submitted for review will not be returned. EXHIBITION: The selected works will be displayed in the Community Arts Center from May 31 through July 27. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 31 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. No early removal of artwork is allowed for any reason. SALES: While the Community Arts Center prefers that the art be for sale, due to the personal nature of quilting (especially repurposed quilts), we understand that not all quilts will be for sale. The Community Arts Center retains a 30% commission on the sale price of all works sold in the gallery. The sale price is the price listed on the registration form. Artists will be notified if/when art is sold and must complete and return a W9 form in order to be paid for the sale. LIMITATIONS: An entry to this exhibit constitutes full agreement on the part of the artist to all conditions outlined in this proposal, and guarantees that work entered will be available for exhibition. Accepted work that is not delivered or is withdrawn may preclude the artist from eligibility for future Community Arts Center competitions/exhibitions. The Community Arts Center reserves the right to eliminate any entry that requires extensive installation. Size limitation: Quilts must have at least a 12 minimum length along the shortest edge. Quilts may have up to a 48 maximum length along the longest edge. Accepted work that differs significantly from the entry images will be disqualified. Quilts must arrive with a 4 hanging sleeve attached to the back that runs the length of the top edge. Any substandard presentation will be disqualified.

The jurors and/or Community Arts Center Director have final authority to define what constitutes an acceptable entry. Hand-delivered work may be picked up from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 28. The artist grants permission to the Community Arts Center to reproduce entries for the purpose of publicity (social media, digital advertisement, and/or print advertisement) unless otherwise noted on the entry form. Submission to this exhibition does not guarantee acceptance. IDENTIFICATION OF ARTWORK: Quilts must have a legible identification tag on the backside with the following information: Artist s name, Title of work, Framed/Finished dimensions, and Date of completion of work. If necessary, this tag may be pinned to the backside of the quilt rather than stitched into place. RECEIVING AND RETURN OF ACCEPTED WORKS: Hand-delivered artwork will be received from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 26. Work may be delivered earlier by appointment. Late entries will not be accepted. Mailed entries must be received by no later than 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 26. Packing materials for hand-delivered entries will not be retained by the Community Arts Center. Hand-delivered work must be claimed by 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 28. Unsold mail-in artwork will be packed and returned within two weeks of the close of the exhibition. If shipping artwork to the Community Arts Center, please include return postage and shipping information inside the packing materials. Exact shipping costs must be pre-paid or pre-arranged by artist. No refunds will be made (except in the case of sales). For return shipping purposes, artwork will be insured for the amount stated on the shipping form. If no insurance amount is stated, none will be requested. The artist is solely responsible for filing insurance claims with their chosen carrier should loss or damage occur during shipping. Work that is not accompanied by return postage or that is not claimed within 30 days after July 28 will become the property of the Community Arts Center and may be disposed of at its discretion. If applying by mail, submit this form along with check or money order payable to: Community Arts Center, 401 W. Main Street, Danville, KY 40422. For more info call 859-236-4054. If applying online, the digital entry is sufficient.
