Working to Support the Groundswell of Aquaculture Development in Nova Scotia Aquaculture Association of Nova Scotia Seafarmers Conference 2018 Vicki Savoie-Swan, PhD Managing Director, CMAR

Centre for Marine Applied Research (CMAR) The Dream Team: Vicki Savoie-Swan Managing Director Toby Balch Director of Research Jenny Malec Program Officer

What lead to the creation of CMAR? The Province has identified aquaculture as a priority for development, with a goal of an industry worth significantly more than today. The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is focusing on working with existing operators to maximize production from existing sites. There is potential for more aquaculture sites, new farming models and species. A deliberate effort to tackle a number of priority areas relating to achieving the provincial development goal is needed. CMAR was established as an office outside of government to focus on this effort.

Structure Management Committee Informs strategic direction from their perspective and expertise Approves workplan Influences and informs communication from their networks NSDFA, Perennia, ACOA, NSCC, COVE Steering Committee Not yet established, but set out in the project Industry partners and collaborators Inform workplan

Advantages of CMAR Ability to leverage support from other government departments agencies and organizations. Lends itself well to communication and collaboration. Changes conversations. Focus.
