Materials needed: *outer fabric (A) - 1/2 yard *applique fabric (B) - *lining fabric (C) - 1 fat quarter *white flannel - 2-10"x10" pieces *heavy weight fusible interfacing - 2 pieces of 4"x12" *fusible web - large enough for applique piece Cutting Final Size: 9 w x 9 t Cut the following: Fabric A: 2 of 10"x10" for exterior of bag, 2 of 4"x12" for straps. Fabric B: Cut out your letter. Fabric C: Cut 2 10"x10" pieces for lining. White flannel (or any light solid color): Cut 2 10"x10" pieces Heavy weight interfacing, also called Craft Fuse: Cut 2 4"x12" pieces. Getting Started 1. Print and cut out the letter that you are using for your applique. A PDF file with letters was sent to you with this pattern. 2. Trace the letter onto your fabric with your fabric wrong side up and your letter wrong side up. Cut it out including any center openings. 3. Place the fusible web on the table, glue side down. 4. Next, place your fusible web letter on the ironing board, glue (shiny) side up. Place your letter on the web, right side up. 5. Using your iron, fuse the letter to the fusible web by pressing it. 6. Peel the paper off of the back of the letter.place it in the very center of one of the exterior pieces (or where-ever you like). Assembly 1. Place one of your flannel pieces on the table. 2. Place one of your exterior pieces on top of the flannel, right side up. 3. Place your 2nd exterior piece on the pile, right side down. 4. Place your 2nd piece of flannel on the pile. Pin them together if you like. Assembly cont. 5. Sew the 4 layers together along the 2 sides and bottom, leaving the top open. Use a 1/2 seam allowance. Assembling the liner 1. Place one of your liner pieces on your table, right side up. 2. Place your 2nd liner piece on the table, right side down. Pin them together if you like. 3. Stitch the 2 layers together along the 2 sides and the bottom, using a 1/2 seam allowance. Make your straps 1. Place your Heavy Weight Interfacing (HWI) on your ironing board, glue side up. The glue side should be shiny. 1 2. Place your fabric strap piece on top of the HWI, right side up. 3. Fuse the fabric to the HWI by pressing it. 4. Turn the strap piece over. 5. Fold the piece in 1/2, lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. 2 & 3 4 5 6. Straps (cont.) 7. Fold one of the long sides in toward the fold line and press. 8. Fold the other side in toward the fold line and press. 9. Fold in 1/2 again to bring both halves together and press. 10. Stitch along the long, open side of the strap, keeping it folded, 1/8" from the edge. 11. Stitch along the other long edge as well, 1/8" from the edge. 12. Final Assembly 1. Turn your lining right side out. 2. Pin one strap piece to top of the lining, on one side of the bag, matching raw edges. The edge of the strap should be 2" from the edge of the bag. Make sure your strap is not twisted. 3. Turn your lining over and repeat with other strap. 4. Slide the lining into the exterior. The right side of the liner will be touching the right side of the exterior. 5. Repin the straps so that the pins are on the flannel and the liner, strap and exterior are all pinned together with the straps still in the right place. 1 2 4 5 copyright 2018 Schoolhouse Patterns Do not duplicate or reproduce any part of this pattern. Final Assembly (cont.) 6. Sew the lining, exterior and straps together by stitching around the top, 1/2" from the edge. 6 7. Now that your bag parts are all stitched together, pull the liner out of the exterior. 8. Now, we're going to pull the bag right side out by pulling the straps and bag exterior through the opening you left in the lining. Finishing the Bag 1. Press the opening of the liner in so that the raw edges are folded in. 2. Sew the opening closed by stitching very close to the edge. Be sure you catch the fabric on both sides. 1 3. Stuff the liner into the bag. 4. Press the top of the bag so that the edges are neat. 5.
