THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY One day while Dalì was having dinner, he began to reflect on the philosophical problem of the softness of the cheese he was eating. After a while Dalì went to his studio, where he had started painting a landscape of Port Lligat and drew two soft watches inspired by cheese.
THE GREAT WAVE OFF KANAGAWA The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a wooden print by the Japanese painter Hokusai. While it is sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is more likely to be a big rogue wave. It represents the area around Mount Fuji and the mountain itself appears in the background.
VINCENT S BEDROOM IN ARLES The surprising colours, the unusual perspective and the familiar subject create one of the most popular works by Van Gogh. In 1888 he painted the first version of his bedroom at Arles, but some time later when he was in in the city hospital, there was a terrible flood that damaged the canvas.
The room gives a peace impression. The painter was able to obtain this particular effect using four colours by matching them. Van Gogh's room is one of the most meaningful paintings ever painted, he managed to sum up all the elements that represented his character perfectly. The artist, using this technique, was able to eliminate the uncomfortable perspective, which could give a sensation of strong instability. In this painting he perfectly managed to achieve its goal of transmitting tranquillity to those who looked at the painting.
CHIBI STYLE Chibi is a Japanese word. The term is used in Japan to describe a design style whose characters are small and chubby, with big eyes and oversize heads.
THE STARRY NIGHT As an adult, Van Gogh suffered from mental instability and depression. As said before, he was hospitalized in the asylum of Saint-Remy and his room faced to the eastern sky which inspired him.
THE SCREAM The Scream is an Expressionist painting by Munch. The landscape in the background is Oslofjord, seen from the Ekeberg hill. One of the four copies made by Munch was stolen from the Munch Museum in Amsterdam by art thieves in August 2004. Munch wrote, concerning the image: I was walking along a path with two friends the sun was setting suddenly the sky turned blood red I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature. This has led some commentators to propose that the person in the painting is not screaming, but reacting with despair to the scream passing through nature.
MARIE THERESE S PORTRAIT Marie Thérèse was Pablo Picasso s lover. During his career, Picasso portrayed this beautiful woman many times. She is always represented with an obscure but extremely sensual attitude.
POINTILLISM Pointillism is a pictorial technique in which small distinct points of colour are painted on the canvas to form an image. The term "Pointillism" was coined by art critics in the late 1880s. The technique is based on the ability of the observer's eye and mind to merge colour spots into a wider range of tones.
THE TREE OF LIFE The tree of life, with its branches, creates the connection between heaven and hell. The hell has the upper hand over every living being, that is born, grows and then returns to earth. The black bird reminds us that everything has a beginning and an end, since it is used as a symbol of death in many cultures.
