The game Shanghai, and its sequels, use Mah- Jongg tiles in an easy-to-learn yet difficult-to-master solitaire play pattern. Shanghai has become an addiction for hundreds of thousands of players all over the world. The game of Shanghai is a game of strategy, memory, and luck. Tiles are arranged in one of several layouts. There are four (or six) of each tile, which can be removed as two matching pairs. To remove a pair of tiles during the game, simply select the two tiles you want. To select a tile, tap on it with your stylus. If it's free to be removed, it will become highlighted. Selecting a matching free tile removes the pair. When you clear all the tiles from the screen, you have won. It's that simple. But wait - because there are four of each tile, you may well find yourself stuck, with unmatchable tiles blocking other key tiles so you can't clear the screen. As you play, you form winning strategies. And because of the magic of computers, you can undo previous matches and try to find any mistakes, shuffle the remaining tiles, put them all back to the way they were at the beginning so you can try again, and other abilities not available with real Mah-Jongg tiles. Please ensure you keep a copy of your activation code in a safe place in case you need to reinstall your software again in the future. 2 history The game of Mah-Jongg has very interesting roots, and many legends about the game abound. It is said that the game evolved from other games played in ancient China. These games were played with cards somewhat similar in appearance to the tiles used in Mah-Jongg today. In 1920, Mah-Jongg was introduced to the Western world by Joseph P. Babcock. Babcock brought the game to the United States by writing a printed list of simplified rules and by adding Arabic numerals to the tiles, allowing them to be more easily read by those unfamiliar with Chinese characters. Today, Mah-Jongg's popularity continues stronger than ever. PAGE 4 PAGE 5

3 getting started 4 Shanghai options The object is to remove all the tiles from the layout, one pair at a time. In standard Shanghai play mode to remove a pair, the tiles must both match and be "free" at the same time. A tile is considered free if no other tile is on top of it and if it can slide out to the left, to the right, or in both directions. If a tile can only slide toward the top or the bottom of the layout, it is not free to be removed. By selecting Options on the splash screen or tapping the options (magic wand) button at the bottom of the game screen, you will display the game s settings and high scores. Here you can set preferences, the tile set to use, layout and more. The initial Shanghai Options dialog contains the game s general preferences: Shanghai will challenge you for hours at a time. Gameplay can become even more challenging by playing against the clock, or by making your own layouts (see Customizing Layouts). Along the top of the screen you will find the following displayed information (from left to right): the total number of tiles left to remove the current number of available moves (i.e. free matching tiles) the layout name the game number timer For example, in the display to the left, the number of tiles left in the layout is 102, so you know that there are still 102 tiles (56 pairs) to be removed. There are currently two free matching tile pairs, the name of the layout is Apple, the game number is 956 and the current game has been played for 02 seconds. If you reach a point when there are no more moves available, you have reached Game Over (which can happen to even the most skillful player). The game will prompt you when this occurs and offer you two options: shuffle the remaining tiles or start over. THE GAME CONTROL BUTTONS The game control buttons (from left to right) in the game perform the following: Start a new game Shuffle the remaining tiles, or replay the current layout from the start Undo the last move (can be pressed multiple times) Hint - displays a potential move (can be pressed multiple times to see all possible moves) Options Menu (Magic Wand) Exit Shanghai PREFERENCES The first screen in Options allows you to set the general preferences. From here you can set: 1 Show Intro - determines if the game s splash screen is displayed. 2 Start with new game - if unchecked it will display the last game played when you start the program. 3 Sound - on/off and volume 4 Animation - if selected the tiles will fly off the screen when a match is correctly made. GAMES In the Games panel, you can set the following: Game # Typically this is left on Random so the application can pick its own game arrangement. If however, you know the number of the game you wish to repeat, you may enter the number here. Play Mode Shanghai - The traditional game. Click on tiles that match if they can slide freely left or right and are not covered. Path 2D - The tiles must match, must not be covered, must be on the same level and must be connectable by a line (path) with only two turns. Path 3D - Similar to 2D mode, but the tiles do not have to be on the same level. Contemplation - Plays exactly like standard Shanghai, but the tiles are turned over. Difficulty Normal - This setting (default) has a selection of 36 different tiles that are each repeated 4 times Easy - this options limits the board to just 24 different tiles that are repeated up to 6 times. Since there are fewer unique tiles, the game becomes easier to complete. PAGE 6 PAGE 7

TILES The Tiles panel allows you to choose from the installed tile sets. On the right side you can view the loaded tiles sets and by selecting one, a preview will appear on the left and a brief description will display below. The Animals, Math, and Spelling sets are not matched through identical tiles but rather partner in a different way. For instance, in the math tileset a tile with 2+2 needs to match with =4 5 customizing layouts To customize layouts, enter the Layout editor: 1 - Tap Options on the splash screen or tap the Options button (the magic wand) at the bottom of the Shanghai screen. 2 - Tap the Layouts tab. 3 - Tap the Editor checkbox. 4 - Tap a Layout name other then *Random or *Sequential LAYOUTS The Layouts panel allows you to select how the tiles will be arranged. In the Collection pop-up, the default, *Random will select a different layout each time you play. The next option in the Collection pop up, *Sequential, will select a new layout, in order, wth each new game. You can also play a specific collection in random order by selecting the collection name. If you wish to select a specific layout, first choose which collection you wish to work with. In the above illustration, the Flowers layout of the Quickies Advanced collection has been selected. A preview of the selected layout is displayed in the box to the left. The editor check box will activate the ability to create your own custom layouts. See the section Customizing Layouts for further details on this functionality SCORES A list of all the scores for completed games along with the duration to completion (Time), name, and layout are displayed. You may clear the scores list by tapping the Clear Score List button. To sort the score list by time, name, date, etc., tap the column header. Tapping the column header again toggles the sort order. To create a new layout, you first have to create a new collection name. Tap the New Collection button and then enter a name for your collection. Now that a new collection has been established, you can create a layout in one of two ways. 1 - Tap the New button and enter a name for the Layout you wish to create: 2 - Open an existing collection and copy a current layout by first selecting it in the Layout pop-up and then tapping the Copy button. Return to your collection and tap Paste. To begin editing your layout, tap the Edit button. In the editor dialog simply tap the screen to place or remove a tile. Within the editor, you can turn on/off the grid display by tapping on the Grid button.the grid will help you to line up tiles and also helps when working on different layers. To add an additional layer (or Plain ) to your layout, tap the > button. You can now edit this new level on top of the previous level(s). To move between layers, tap the < and > buttons. To toggle the display of all layers (as shown in the left screen shot), or just the level you are editing (as shown on the right ), tap the "1-5" button. PAGE 8 PAGE 9

When you are through editing, tap the OK button and you will return to the Layout panel. Here, a preview of the layout you created will be displayed. The final step to making your new layout operational is to select one or more checkboxes under the Usable with. These settings will determine in which game modes the layout will play. Depending on the number of tiles, Path 2D or Path 3D may not always be selectable. Tap the OK button in the upper right corner of the screen to play Shanghai with your newly created layout. NOTE - If you want, you can use the Pocket PC File Explorer application to beam a copy of your layout collection to another Pocket PC device. This file would be located in the My Device\Games\Shanghai directory. Find your collection name, tap and hold and select Send via Infrared... to transfer to another Pocket PC handheld. You can remove a created layout by selecting the layout from the Layout pop-up menu and tapping the Delete button. The standard "built-in" layouts can not be deleted. credits First Printing, September 2001.
