All Play Guitar - Level 1 Introduction These books are designed to give you solid musical training while you LEARN SONGS. Our books support 3 different steps in your musical journey, first you PLAY music, then you UNDERSTAND music, finally you CREATE your own music. This book is the FIRST BOOK in the PLAYING section. At the back of this book is the NOTES section. At the end of each lesson your teacher should write a brief description in the notes section, of the things you should work on in between lessons. This gives you a clear outline of what to work on, as well as how far you have come. At the very back of each book is a checklist of information that you should understand before moving on to the next book. And the COMPLETION page, stating that you learned all of the info on the checklist. Upon completing each level/book you instructor will notify the office and we will send you a CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION and the book for the NEXT LEVEL. What you should expect when your teacher gets to your house. There must be ADULT SUPERVISION other than the instructor in the home while the lesson is conducted. Your teacher should ARRIVE ON TIME, and should leave on time. Your teacher should have a Guitar, amp, tuner, and a way to play recordings. Your teacher should set up for the lesson in a PUBLIC PLACE in the house, preferably the living room or den. This location should have good lightning, chairs that support good posture (like dining chairs), and a power outlet. Your teacher should always encourage and facilitate the learning of SONGS. PAGE GOAL: Know the PARTS OF YOUR GUITAR and how they work. ACTION! Your teacher should point out each part of YOUR guitar, including its name, and function. CHECK BOX when task is complete 9

PAGE GOAL: Be able to LOCATE EACH STRING BY NAME. ACTION! Your teacher should help you memorize the names of the strings. One way to remember the string names is: E-Elvis, A-Ate, D-Dog, G-Guts, B-Back, and E-East. Now you come up with a name for each string that starts with the letter of that string and write it in the space designated for each string. CHECK BOX when task is complete 11

PAGE GOAL: Be able to TUNE YOUR GUITAR. ACTION! Your teacher should show you how to tune your guitar using an electronic tuner, and using the picture below, explain how you can tune the guitar to its self just by listening to, and matching specific notes. (Tuning by ear can be very difficult, if you have a hard time with it, just move on and it will come later). PLAYING TIP: When tuning, you should start with a low pitch and turn the tuning machine so the note rises to the desired pitch. CHECK BOX when task is complete 13

PAGE GOAL: Know the symbols for PROPER FINGERING. ACTION! You should use the fingering diagram below to learn which numbers and symbols refer to which fingers. Then your teacher should quiz you to make sure that you understand. PLAYING TIP: For proper technique, you should keep the fingernails short on your fretting hand. Left hand- Thumb= T, Pointer= 1, Middle= 2, Ring= 3, Pinky= 4. Right hand- Thumb= T, Pointer= 1, Middle= 2, Ring= 3, Pinky= 4. CHECK BOX when task is complete 15

PAGE GOAL: To understand HOW THE GUITAR WORKS, and to be able to communicate how to FIND NOTES on the guitar. ACTION! Your teacher should explain how SOUND IS CREATED by the guitar, and how by pressing the strings at different frets you get different notes. CHECK BOX when task is complete ACTION! Your teacher should call out a STRING NAME, and you should pick the appropriate string. You should do this for all the strings at least 3 times. CHECK BOX when task is complete ACTION! Your teacher should call out a FRET NUMBER, and you should press your # 1 finger of your fretting hand, behind the appropriate fret. You should do this for frets 1-12 at least 2 times. CHECK BOX when task is complete ACTION! Your teacher should have you play a note on your guitar by calling out the string name, the fret number, and which finger to use. (For example. Play the Low E string on the 3 rd fret with your number 1 finger.) Your teacher should do this using songs, like the bass notes from a song, like Sweet home Alabama. PAGE GOAL: To be able to UNDERSTAND RHYTHM, and be able to COUNT IN TIME. ACTION! Your teacher should describe Rhythmic Beats, Counting, measures, and 4/4 time, whole notes, whole note rests, half notes, half note rests. Your teacher should help you count out loud and tap your foot to the whole and half note rhythms below, then your teacher should write whole and half note rhythms on the blank staff and help you read those rhythms. Steps to achieving your musical goals! 1. With your teachers help, select a target date to complete this book. Workbook target completion date: 2. Each week your teacher will make sure you have material to focus on for each subject, and will write what to practice in the space provided next to each subject. The teacher will check the box next to each subject confirming that they taught you the information listed during that weeks class. Then the teacher and the student will briefly share what is being taught with the parent. The teacher will also write the lesson date, and sign their initials showing that weeks lesson is completed. 3. In the days between lessons the student must practice a minimum of 3 times, for a minimum of 10 minutes each time. The parent must write their initials and the date on the practice page for each of the 3 required practices. 47
