English Curriculum Intermediate Lesson 19
1) Reading: Visit Toy Store I just went to the doctor s office and had to get some painful shots in my arm. My mom said that if I was a good boy that she would take me to the toy store and I could pick out any toy to have. They have so many different toys there that I want, so it will be hard to choose. My friends all have these new toys called fidget spinners that are fun to play with.
1) Reading: Visit Toy Store You spin them around and you can balance them on things. My friend even balanced it on his dog s nose. I think if they have a cool one at the toy store I might ask my mom for that. It is supposed to help in school as well. You spin the toy instead of fidgeting with other things. I see all the kids at school playing with them under the desk.
2) Speaking Phrase: Can I get + (noun) This phrase is used when you are asking to have something. It is a little less formal. A more formal way to ask for something is May I have + (noun). Can I get a copy of your notes from last Friday? Can I get another slice of pizza? Can I get a fidget spinner at the toy store? Can I get that marketing report already? May I have a moment of your time? May I have a copy of your notes?
3) Conversation: Going to the mall Leah: I want to go look at the new Christmas decorations at the mall. Robert: I just saw them yesterday. I had to take Tommy to get a new pair of soccer shorts. Leah: Really, how did they look? Robert: They were well done. It really felt like Christmas time. We can go over and walk around if you want? Leah: Yeah I would love that. This is my favorite time of the year to go to the mall. Robert: Why is that?
3) Conversation: Going to the mall Leah: Just everything about it. The atmosphere with the decorations, the sales, buying things for other people, and of course buying some things for me as well. Robert: Let s go over there then. I need to pick out a new Christmas tie for a work holiday party coming up. Leah: Ok, let me just change my clothes and grab my purse. I like to look nice when I go to the mall. Robert: I will never understand women. Ok, let me know when you re ready to go.
4) Topic: Shopping for Clothes Window shopping: walking around the outside of stores and looking in their display windows to see if they have anything that perks your interest. Mannequins: The fake people that are used to display clothes. Dressing Room: The place where you can try on clothes that you like to see if they fit.
4) Topic: Shopping for Clothes How much does this (dress/shirt) cost? Does this come in a smaller size? Where is the dressing room? Do you have anymore of the sweaters that are on that mannequin? Your total is three hundred and forty seven dollars. ($347) Do you know where I can get alterations done?
5) Today s Idiom: Make up one s mind This phrase means to come to a conclusion. To figure out what choice you want to make about something. You need to make up your mind about which dress you want. We need to leave soon. I can t make up my mind about what I want to be when I am older. He never makes up his mind about women. Do you want to go out to eat or stay in? Make up your mind.
