These projects may be painted for personal use/ personal profit but may not be reproduced for graphic or scrapbook use for resale. Photocopying and all other types of mechanical reproduction are prohibited with the exception of enlarging or reducing the image size to fit your surface. Patterns may not be republished, distributed, transmitted, displayed, broadcast, or reproduced for any business/commercial purposes without written permission from the artist. This pattern uses a technique which I am very fond of: dry brushing. Dry brush is an effective technique where you slowly build your paint layers to develop depth by layering from dark to light. Often when I use this technique I will use one brush that I do not clean until I have layered all of the paint colors. When dry brushing remove most of the paint onto a dry paper towel before applying the paint to the surface, this gives you a light paint application which can be somewhat transparent or more opaque depending on the amount of paint you apply. The beauty of the technique is that you can apply the paint so that your base layer shows through and changes the value of subsequent layers. In this pattern I chose to use a dirty brush between paint colors. Since we are working from dark to light leaving the previous paint color on your brush gives you a graduated change between paint applications. PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS Base the entire piece front and back with Lamp Black. This is simply an undercoat. You will leave the grooved border the black color. 2 artistsclub.com

Base the center background using a slip slap brush technique, using a back and forth motion, load your 1" flat wash with Snow White and dip one corner of the brush into Indian Turquoise and begin moving your brush around slip slapping the paint onto the surface, reloading your brush as needed until you have achieved a mottled marbled look. Base the corner squares with Indian Turquoise, float shade with Sapphire, and dry brush highlight with Light Buttermilk. Base the rectangular borders with Watermelon Slice, dry brush with Orange Flame, and float shade with Napa Red. Load the 6" X 6" Sunny Sketch stamp with Indian Turquoise, align the stamp so that it stamps in the corner lining up with the side and bottom of the center of the wood piece, repeat the stamp on the opposite side of the center rectangle. Note the pattern photo for placement. To load your stamp use a small damp sponge to tap the paint onto the surface of the stamp. This will take a little practice to achieve the right distribution of paint, as well as how wet to keep your paint while prepping the stamp. Work quickly, pounce the paint onto the surface of the stamp and take the stamp directly to the wood surface. Using one of the clear handles helps to stabilize the stamp and allows for greater control when stamping. Once you have positioned your stamp on the wood surface press with even pressure to transfer the paint to your surface. If you do not get a good image it might be that your paint is drying too quickly. You can remove the paint from the wood surface by wetting the paint with a bristle brush and wiping it off with a paper towel. Do this quickly before the paint has time to set up and begin to dry. Then reapply paint to your stamp, position the stamp on the surface and press the image onto the surface. Clean your stamp when you are finished. Do not leave paint to dry on your stamp. Stencil the words onto the bottom and side rectangular shapes with Napa Red. Choose the message you want to ap- artistsclub.com 3

pear in these border areas, most of this will be covered slightly with the images. Transfer the sun to the top of the signboard. Note how it overlaps into the center rectangular area, and paint the area on the blue background with Watermelon Slice. You will use the background paint color in the top border area to develop the sun. Dry brush the sun with Orange Flame. Using the dirty brush from the previous paint application load your brush with Jack-O-Lantern Orange and remove much of the paint on a clean paper towel and dry brush over the circular portion of the entire sun which is above and below the grooved border. Load your dirty brush with Orange Twist, and using the same technique removing much of the paint on a clean paper towel drybrush over the previous layer. Load this dirty drybrush from your previous paint applications with Moon Yellow; remove much of your paint and dry brush the sun area. You have now worked from dark to light and have developed the colors for the sun. Using the same dirty brush from the previous paint applications load your brush with Neon Scorching Yellow and lightly dry brush over the sun. Float shade on the red rectangular area with Napa Red to shade behind the sun and the sun s rays. Float shade the sun s rays which overlap onto the blue background with Sapphire. Float highlight the rays with Orange Twist and deepen with Neon Scorching Yellow. Lightly dry brush highlight the sun s rays with Orange Twist. Using a SL line the lines forming the rays with Metallic Gold. Note the pattern photo for placement Dry brush the ground with Honey Brown, Hauser Dark Green, and Olive Green overlapping the paint colors to develop depth. Note the pattern photo for placement Using your favorite transfer method transfer the pattern to the plaque. Let s Paint the Ants and Make a Wish Lettering Transfer the ants and the lettering onto the sun and the bottom of the board. Base the ants and the lettering with Lamp Black. Float highlight the ants with Slate Grey. Base the eyes with Snow White and dip dot the pupil with Lamp Black. Using a SL line the antennae and legs with Slate Grey and dip dot the antennae with Lamp Black. Using a SL line the highlight lines onto the lettering and the ants with Deco Art Media Metallic Gold. You can use any Metallic Gold that you prefer; this Metallic Gold is my personal favorite. artistsclub.com 5

Paint the Foreground Elements Base the table with Honey Brown, randomly dry brush Burnt Sienna onto the table. Float shade with Asphaltum, float highlight with Orange Twist. Deepen the highlighted areas by dry brushing Orange Twist into the highlighted areas. Note the pattern photo for placement. Base the cake and plate with Snow White. Base the frosting with Electric Pink and dry brush highlight with Snow White. Dip dot the frosting with Snow White. Float shade the cake and cake plate with a glaze float of Payne s Grey. Base the candle flames with Moon Yellow and highlight with Neon Scorching Yellow. Base the cats with Moon Yellow float shade with Honey Brown and highlight with Light Buttermilk. Base the cat s stripes with Watermelon Slice, float shade with Napa Red, and float highlight with Electric Pink. Base the hair on the heads with Electric Pink. Using a SL line the stripes on the tail and neck with Watermelon Slice. Using a stylus dot the eyes with Lamp Black and dip dot the highlight with Snow White. Base the noses with Lamp Black and using a SL line the highlight with Snow White. Base the sunflower centers with Honey Brown, float shade with Burnt Sienna and deepen with Asphaltum. Dry brush highlight with Orange Twist. Dip dot the center of the flower with Burnt Sienna. Note the pattern photo for placement. Base the flower petals with Moon Yellow float shade with Honey Brown and deepen the shaded areas with a glaze float of Asphaltum. Float highlight with Light Buttermilk. Base the leaves and stems with Hauser Medium Green, dry brush the leaves with Honey Brown. Float shade the leaves with Hauser Dark Green and highlight with Olive Green. Using a SL line the grass with Hauser Dark Green. Note the pattern photo for placement. Let s Paint Sarah Base Sarah s face, neck, arms, and legs with White Peach, float shade with Dried Clay and highlight with Snow White. Using a circular motion dry brush the cheeks with Electric Pink. Using a stylus dip dot the eyes with Lamp Black, dot the highlight in the eyes with Snow White. Base the hair with Burnt Sienna, line highlight with Honey Brown and Light Buttermilk. Thin a small puddle of Burnt Sienna down to a transparent consistency. Using the SL add in small amounts of the transparent Burnt Sienna to tone down the highlighted areas. This is simply meant to tone down the highlights but also can add additional tonal values since you are using a transparent wash over lighter highlighted areas. You may need to reapply some of the highlight paint colors once you have toned down the value of the hair. Using a SL line additional highlighted areas in the hair with Metallic Gold. Thin Soft Black down to a thin transparent consistency. Using the SL line shade with Asphaltum and Soft Black. Painting hair is a balancing act to develop the tones and values of the hair. Work back and forth between paint colors to develop the hair. When Soft Black is thinned down it takes on a dark brown value and adds nice shaded detail to the hair. Note the line art for the direction lines in the hair. Base the hat with Honey Brown, dry brush highlight with Moon Yellow and then deepen with Light Buttermilk, float shade with Asphaltum. Using a SL line the hashtag marks onto the hat with Light Buttermilk. Paint the sunflower using the instructions found above. Base the skirt and neckline with Watermelon Slice, dry brush the skirt with Orange Flame, and float shade with Napa Red. Undercoat the pinafore with Honey Brown, this will allow for better paint coverage. Base with Orange Flame, randomly dry brush with Jack-O-Lantern Orange. Using the dirty brush from the previous dry brush application load your brush with Orange Twist and begin to develop the highlighted areas, remember to remove much of your paint on a dry paper towel. Using the dirty brush from the previous paint application add Moon Yellow and deepen by randomly dry brushing in the highlighted areas. Wash Neon Scorching Yellow over the highlighted areas. Float shade with Watermelon Slice and dry brush Watermelon Slice into the darker areas of the folds of the pinafore. Note the pattern photo for placement. Base the shoes with Honey Brown and the soles with Soft Black. Float shade the shoes with Asphaltum and highlight with a glaze float of Light Buttermilk, deepen the shaded area next to the soles of the shoes with a glaze float of Soft Black. Base the lace on the pinafore with Snow White and using a stylus dip dot with Payne s Grey. Lightly glaze float the lace with Payne s Grey. FINISHING Outline the details on the piece with a black permanent marker. Spray varnish and enjoy. 6 artistsclub.com
