Hangouts on air - the basics There's another type of hangout, of which will you to be aware. If you go across to the sidebar and then click hangouts on air it will bring up a screen that will enable you to firstly see what live hangouts in there are occurring at this time. 1. You can scroll down and you can watch those. 2. Or you can start your own hangout on there by clicking the blue button. www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 3
You can start a hangout now, or you can schedule it for later - just click. 1. Once you've named your event, you can... 2. Add e.g. circles of people that will WATCH that live broadcast. www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 4
A hangout on air is a live event that is broadcast on your YouTube channel. Then you can invite GUESTS. Note: If you want to start the event without inviting the guests, that's possible to do also. When you've done that, you simply will click invite or you can skip and invite later. Note: you won't start broadcasting as soon as you enter as you will have to click the broadcast button. www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 5
Here is an overview of the process of the broadcasting. Note: if you change the name internally it will not change the name given to the hangout watched by people on the outside. When you enter the HOA, you will see the hangout buffering. You cannot go live until it has finished. When you are live, you will see the number of viewers in the bottom right. This next bit of information is very important! 1. Click embed to give you the codes for embedding the hangout-on-air into a) website (on the right) and, 2. the YouTube code - you can give people this and they can watch it. NOTE: they cannot enter the hangout with this code. Note: if click embed again and these additional code fields will disappear, but can be bought up when needed. So, here is a change If you have started a HOA as shown, it will create an event (now or later): www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 6
As such, you will NOT need to embed the video code as below. BUT if you did an event first, then want to add a HOA code in afterwards, then you still need this process. Before we get to that, note that you can: 1. start the hangout straight away, or 2. add a trailer, or 3. turn it into a Q&A hangout (so you can gather questions prior and during the broadcast) www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 7
Scheduling a HOA for later Apart from setting a date in the future, the process is very similar: This also generates an event page. Easy. www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 8
How to embed the HOA code - if you only created an event If you can still embed the hangout-on-air code i.e. the YouTube url into an event, people can watch it live once you start the broadcast. To do so, first click edit an event : Once you have the edit itself available, choose advanced. www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 9
Next you need to bring up more options. 1. In the advance settings choose show more options - this brings up additional fields in the event 2. Drop the Hangout-on-air (HOA) code into the event. NOTE: make sure you use the correct code in the correct field! It is the one with YouTube near the start and the field says YouTube as well. Click Save and you are done here. www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 10
Whichever way you do it, how to start your broadcast Next, returning to the hangout-on-air. You will want to start the broadcast. Once clicked it brings up a screen to let you know you will be streamed live on YouTube. www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 11
Then you have a few seconds until broadcast. You will hear a ping. Note: there is around a 1 minute delay from when you go live to when the people watching see the HOA. When you are on-air it will show on-air in red on the upper left. Once you are finished with the hangout, click End Broadcast and you will be off air. A few extra tips: during the hangout-on-air you may need to ask them to mute when you are interviewing someone, or they will jump in the main screen; or you can blue box the person by clicking on their image at the bottom - or yours - that takes control of the camera. BUT the guests don't know this is happening so they still may see people 'jumping' into the main screen. Note: when you have just 2 people in a hangout the way it will be seen is different to having 3+ people. In won t have the film strip on the bottom so will just switch screens when each person speaks. Also, if you have embedded the hangout into an event you will be able to visit the event page and pick up comments from people who are watching. That was an introduction to hangouts on air. www.plusyourbusiness.com Page 12
