Our 2012 Holiday Party will be held Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the home of Bill Bloomfield, 940 1st St. Contact Tom Jeffry for more information.

Our Day Begins... It was Monday, November 28, 2011, and President Bill Bloomfield, following a homily on giving by James Caprell, allowed Drill Sgt. Kent Caldwell to subject our veterans to some ranting before a round of the Army s song, thus completing musical tributes to our four armed services branches..chris Ullman announced that Deb Arnold was the big winner in the USC-UCLA competition (second only to the Club coffers)..sharon Waterous, on behalf of the Hometown Fair Board, delivered still more funds to our Club coffers.jim Hunter awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship to Gerry Morton, after a mere 10 months of membership Gerry is also our 11th Club Benefactor (achieved by putting at least $10K in his will for our Club). CAPOS Bill Hodgman is the Head Deputy of the Los Angeles County District Attorney s Target Crimes Division. A Manhattan Beach resident, Bill has prosecuted Charles Keating, Michael Jackson, OJ Simpson, Suge Knight, and multiple others, and has been integral in the investigations of the LAPD and the Catholic Church. A relentless advocate for justice and always a gentleman (I ve personally had the pleasure of working with him), Bill was brought to us by Gerry Morton to tell us about CAPOS, the Crimes Against Police Officers Division. (In the U.S. last year there were 53,000 assaults on cops, of whom 56 were killed.) The CAPOS Division is on-call 24-7, as and when requested by law enforcement officers, and is staffed by the most experienced deputy district attorneys, most with extensive gang experience. They coordinate with multiple other law enforcement and justice agencies and leave no stone unturned in their investigations. Bill shared with us the keys to the successful prosecutions of the assailants of several officers, leaving us with law enforcement victim names Sparkes, Tuck, Porras, Yap, Wade, Ortiz, and of course our own Martin Ganz and the cold case prosecution of the 1947 killings of two El Segundo officers. (It was good to hear victim names more than defendant names for once I ve always thought newspapers should report crimes by victim names for example, the Bobby Kennedy case, not the Sirhan

case.) When asked, Bill also expressed his frustration with death penalty enforcement Bill himself has put four defendants on Death Row, to no avail. (Victim families increasingly ask him to settle for a life-without-parole sentence so that they can have closure.) President Bill, who happens to himself be the father of a Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney (Wyatt), thanked Bill Hodgman for reminding us of those officers who have dedicated their lives to service. Hodgman, saying that he was honored to be with us, clearly understood that service is something Rotarians can appreciate. Into The Wild Blue Yonder It was November 14, 2011, and Acting President Tom Jeffry celebrated another service branch, during this month of honoring our veterans, by sending us into the wild blue yonder with our rendition of the Air Force song..les Silverman told us to keep perspective by keeping a sense of humor, which turned into the perfect message leading in to our speaker s presentation.deb Robertson s parents visited us from Colorado.Russ Samuels and Russ Rothner coordinated delivery of 150 backpacks to 150 thrilled children at Moffett School..Jan Buike solicited volunteers for the annual senior citizens luncheon at Joslyn Center on December 8..Alex Yoffe s bride Kristen came to us on behalf of the Sandpipers to complete preparations for their holiday baskets.lindy Murrell reported that her husband Roger Morrell (yes, he misspells his name) is doing morewell..ian Jackson treated us to a sports report..chris Ullman collected funds for his annual UCLA-USC fundraiser ( nuf said)..kathleen Terry distributed individualized thank-you notes for members who participated in the Lennox Career Day.John Osten reported that his son Aaron passed the Bar. The Cat s Away With the cat away, the mouse played President-Elect and Acting President Tom Jeffry prepared a script for a news roundtable, complete with slides promoting Bill Bloomfield for president, with inspired slogans like He ll stand up for the 1% and Not like the last

President Bill. Roger Cox channeled Piers Morgan, Larry Johnson impersonated Herman Cain, and I raised a lonely voice for the Occupiers. Some of the better lines: Pizza is sexier than laundry, He tells corny jokes and sings old songs, and The Democrats would welcome such an easy opponent. Total Commitment Our speaker, Tony Arminio, sent us a message of total commitment. This very young, energized 85-year-old found great success selling vacuum cleaners, starting door to door with Electrolux and moving on to management and training. The father of six kids, his motivational talk focused on the synergy of the physical, spiritual, family, financial and vocational that, together, build character. But best of all, he told good jokes lots of them, none of which I can remember to tell again, all of which drew great appreciation from his laughing audience. You had to be there. Wine You Cannot Buy Acting President Tom raffled off wine from his uncle s vineyard, calling it wine you cannot buy. Like the wine, you can t buy Bloomfield, and AP Tom announced to his relieved audience that President Bill had withdrawn his U.S. presidential candidacy. Secure in that knowledge, we all agreed we would have voted for him. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help Lindy keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make Lindy's job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you're not sure it's a make-up--hey, tell her anyway! Rotary Make-Up Clubs - 12:15pm Rotarians Participate at Weekly Meetings!
