a program of the all stars project in partnership with the new york city police department OPERATION CONVERSATION: COPS & KIDS began as a partnership between the All Stars Project and the NYPD, and has become a new national model in improving police-community relations. The program s simple yet innovative design uses performance as a tool to help police officers and young people break out of their stereotyped roles and learn to see and appreciate one another in new ways. [The Cops & Kids workshop] really opened my eyes. It was helpful to sit in a room and talk with police officers about their experience and their worries. For once I saw cops as people who cared, and people who were willing to listen to what teens had to say. YOUTH PARTICIPANT Cops & Kids program We recognize that the antagonism between the police and youth in poor communities is real and dangerous. At the same time, we recognize that cops and kids share many things in common they often come from similar backgrounds, they leave their house in the morning not knowing whether they will make it home at the end of the day. We have discovered a way to use performance as a tool to break down barriers and to be able to the see the other in new ways. DR. LENORA B. FULANI Co-Founder, All Stars Project; Director, Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids
a program of the all stars project in partnership with the new york city police department COPS & KIDS ACROSS THE COUNTRY Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids was first created in 2006 by ASP co-founder, Lenora Fulani, Ph.D., in the wake of the shooting of Sean Bell in Queens, New York. Since then, Cops & Kids has involved more than 4,000 NYC youth and police officers in performance workshops in which they create new relationships and conversations, and it continues to be recognized for the way it uses performance to build trust in three cities across the country. DALLAS In partnership with the City of Dallas, the All Stars is creating new bridge-building activities bringing Dallas youth and police officers together through our flagship program, the All Stars Talent Show Network. NEWARK In 2017, with the support of Mayor Ras Baraka, the All Stars expanded Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids to the City of Newark, where nearly 300 youth and police officers have participated in the program. NEW YORK CITY Cops & Kids is proud to continue our partnership with the world s largest police department, the NYPD. The program has been endorsed by the last three police commissioners: James O Neill, William Bratton, and Ray Kelly. Awarded the 2015 IACP/Cisco Award for Community Policing
ENDORSEMENTS Getting to understand and work together to resolve issues, have that conversation, talk to one another, get to know one another is what Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids is all about. It is getting cops and kids and people with different perspectives in life, people who grew up differently, people who look at life differently together in a room to talk. They talk about what they feel, what they need to be done within the communities. There is no way as a police department that we can keep this city safe without working with our communities. TERENCE MONAHAN Chief of Department, NYPD Nothing is more important to our city and our nation than building trust and creating a close and working relationship between the police and communities of color. Operation Conversation: Cops & Kids is an important instrument in building that trust. It is an innovative grassroots program and a nationally recognized model that is making a profound difference in the lives of young people, our communities and police officers. We need to both protect our children and effectively police our neighborhoods. We are proud to partner with Dr. Lenora Fulani and the All Stars as they bring together kids and cops in Newark to create new relationships. RAS BARAKA Mayor, City of Newark The All Stars is creating a new kind of community-building activity on the cutting-edge of police-community relations. The current work done by the All Stars in the Dallas community is much needed. Through their [community development programs], their organization has created positive opportunities and afterschool activities for hundreds of kids, which creates a positive trend in addressing community needs. DAVID BROWN Retired Chief of Police, Dallas Police Department In San Francisco we have segments of our community that are so disconnected from what is going on in the rest of the city, and what All Stars is doing is trying to create a bridge between those communities that have been left behind and the rest of us. I am so committed to creating a safe community that doesn t leave anyone behind. We cannot really have true public safety, true social justice, a truly successful community, unless everyone is part of that progress. And [All Stars], one city at a time, one young person at a time, is making a real difference. GEORGE GASCÓN District Attorney, San Francisco I had the chance to go to New York and visit Dr. Fulani and the All Stars Project and I had the opportunity to go to [a Cops & Kids Demonstration Workshop] at the Apollo Theater and see law enforcement officers and youth from urban areas on a stage. And I tell you, it brought me to the edge of my seat and it filled my heart. For I saw myself in those young people. I saw myself in those policemen. I saw that we re similar in more ways than we re different, and that through a mere conversation, how two groups can come together and understand. RONALD S. JOHNSON Captain, Missouri State Highway Patrol
