Creating Auxiliary Nesting Habitat for Birds around the College Campus Codenamed Project Hornbill Email: projecthornbill@gmail.com Indraprastha College for Women University of Delhi Delhi - 110054 http://www.facebook.com/ourwingedfriends

Motivation Rapid urbanisation is decreasing the number and diversity of birds in Delhi, so much so that we had to declare sparrow Delhi s state bird, so it could be protected There is thus a need to conserve bird diversity in Delhi and raise awareness about the same IP College is located in the vicinity of Delhi s two lifelines. Both the Delhi Ridge and River Yamuna support rich avian diversity, and are also the reason of the rich bird diversity found in IP College However, construction around the college in the last few years has impacted this bird diversity to a great extent

Location of IP College (with Delhi Ridge on the left and River Yamuna on the right)

Introduction Project approval letter received: 8 th February 2016 Time available: 2 months Proposed methodology revised after learning that project scheme does not have financial support component Project Objectives Educate students on the role and importance of birds in the environment Raise awareness about loss of habitat for birds in Delhi and encourage students to learn about avian fauna on campus Construct bird houses from sustainable materials, to be placed around campus as auxiliary nesting sites

Project Implementation The four verticals of the project implementation are: 1. Research, 2. Awareness Generation, 3. Action, and 4. Advocacy

Research I: Literature Review After extensive research using the Internet, we found that bird houses have been successfully used to augment bird populations, especially in urban areas Source: http://www.50birds.com/birdhouses/about-birdhouses-and-attracting-birds.htm

Literature Review (contd.) Bird house can be made from wood and also from related sustainable materials such as bamboo and even waste material Source: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/bangalore/bangaloreans-lap-up-sparrow-houses

Literature Review (contd.) However, fabrication requires capital investment, So we need to think of alternatives (We explored the possibility of working with existing carpenters and convert waste wood into bird houses which may also be sold to sustain the interest of the selected carpenter)

Our Work: Action

A total of 8 bird houses were placed in the college in the last week of April The nests are being monitored for nesting success In addition, water was provided to the birds at various places in the campus during the summer heat Care was taken to change the water every few days to prevent any kind of malaria/ dengue outbreak

Research - II: Bollywood and Birds But there s much more

Right from Nani Teri Morni Ko Mor Le Gaye Masoom (1962) Music Director: Hemant Kumar Lyricist: Shailendra Singh to Udd Ja Kaale Kaawan Ghadar (2001) Music Director: Uttam Singh Lyricist: Anand Bakshi to Aye Dil-e Bulbul-e Bulbul-e-Bismil Haider (2014) Music Director: Vishal Bhardwaj Lyricist: Gulzar

Research Paper Compiling Research Paper entitled: Exploring 100 Years of Bollywood s Infatuation with Birds Database of songs with bird references has been prepared and is being analysed in this research paper The paper will be communicated to the pioneer edition (July 2016) of the Journal of Innovation for Inclusive Development (JIID)

Awareness: An urgent need to create awareness about birds in the college community was felt from the very beginning of the Project This was done by the successful creation of a Bird Watching Club in the college Both the project and the Club required at least one binoculars A fund raising drive was therefore conceptualized and a small membership fees of Rs. 10/- person was collected from the members of the Bird Watching Club with a promise of conducting regular bird watching expeditions for them A binoculars was purchased from the collected fund

Acknowledgement: The Project thanks the IP College Community for readily participating in our fund raising/ membership drive and contributing towards the same.

Facebook: Our Winged Friends A Facebook page was also created for the Club and to raise awareness about birds ( /OurWingedFriends)

Neighbourhood Outreach

Advocacy The Project is advocating with the College Administration to place a large display board close to the Entrance Gate which pictorially represents the Birds of IP College Learning from our Tree Census & Labelling project, we are certain that such a display board will create considerable awareness in the college community about their avian friends To ensure this, the project is presently preparing an ebooklet with similar title (Birds of IP College) and primary data for this has already been collected The IP College faculty has already been sensitive towards birds and one of them (Dr. Nitoo Das) has recently put together 2016 calendar themed on birds found in IP College with support from the college

Scope and Limitations/Our Feedback The project time frame could have been better organised so that we could start in the first week of January. Balancing time between exams and project proved to be a challenge The project implementation would have benefitted if some budget (even 2-3k) was allocated in the beginning of the project The group size of 25 sometimes became too large a number to coordinate with

Thank you!
