Sunday in the Park for Critters June 13 th, 2004 (Rain Date: June 27 th 2004) When: Sunday, June 13 th, 2004 12:00 Noon 5:00 PM Where: Why: Prospect Park, Brooklyn: 9 th Street & Prospect Park West To knit for critters and have a good time! What s this all about? The Critter Knitters Coalition was created in response to the dire need for warm, comfortable blankets by abandoned animals in New York animal shelters. These blankets help frightened cats and dogs feel calm and improve the quality of life for shelter animals while they await their forever homes. The blankets also improve the shelter s aesthetics and help animals get adopted out sooner. (For more information on the Critter Knitters Coalition, visit their website at: http://www.critterknitters.org/) A Knit-a-thon benefiting the Critter Knitters Coalition is currently underway. Each blanket submitted will count as an entry into a raffle of great prizes. Information on the knit-a-thon can be found here: http://www.ashidome.com/knitathon/ In addition to the on-going Critter Knitters Knit-a-Thon, we re inviting knitters of ALL experience levels to meet up and participate in several Knit-Outs in local NYC parks. We ve dubbed these events Sunday in the Park for Critters. On the day of the Knit-Out, we'll meet at noon and knit, chat, mingle, gossip, and generally have fun until 5 PM. The Knitting in the Park for Critters get-togethers will be a great way for novices and experts to meet, and just a fun way to let your hair down. Knit-Outs are currently planned for Central Park, Prospect Park & Astoria Park. Some snacks will be provided and as a thank you for participating we will be having two on-site raffles especially for these events. Where is the Brooklyn Knit-Out being held? Our Brooklyn Knit-Out is scheduled for Sunday, June 13 th and is being held near the Bandshell & Harmony Playground (9 th Street & Prospect Park West) in Prospect Park. We will meet at the Lafayette monument at Noon and walk to our hanging out area. Page 1

What if it rains? We have scheduled Sunday, June 27 th as the rain date for the Prospect Park event. How do I get there? Take the 2 or 3 train to Grand Army Plaza. From Grand Army Plaza walk along Plaza Street West to Prospect Park West. Continue walking on Prospect Park West until you reach 9 th Street. -- OR -- Take the F train to 7 th Avenue. From 7 th Avenue walk two blocks to 9 th Street and Prospect Park West. (If you need directions from other train stations, please e-mail Liz -- pp_knitout@ashidome.com -- and she will do her best to accommodate you.) Page 2

At the entrance to the Park at 9 th Street and Prospect Park West, you will see the Lafayette monument. Sage and Liz will be greeting knitters at monument from 11:45 Noon. Liz will be wearing black pants, Doc Martens and a beige baseball cap with cherry blossoms embroidered on the front. If she doesn t see you, just walk up and say HI! If you arrive after Noon, follow the directions below to find us: There are two paths into the park from the Lafayette monument. The one to the right takes you towards the Harmony Playground and the Bandshell. The one to the left takes you to a picnic area. Follow the path on the left towards the BBQ area. It s a very short walk to this area 5 minutes tops from the monument. You should see the sign at right. Page 3

You ll see the some tables and BBQ pits. We will be sitting across from the BBQ pits on the right side of the road in a small field between the Bandshell and the pits. The Bandshell and playground will be visible on your right side. Just look for the knitters! Its honestly REALLY hard to miss! (If you need further help or directions, feel free to contact Liz at: pp_knitout@ashidome.com) What should I bring? We recommend you bring: A blanket or sheet to sit on, Sunscreen or a hat if the day is particularly bright (or if you burn easily), Water or another suitable beverage and, most importantly, Your knitting yarn, needles, previously completed blankets, blankets in progress. If you have a bad back, you may also want to bring a soft cushion or pillow to sit on. The area of the park where we ll be sitting is shady and grass-covered, but the grass is thin in spots. There are many park benches around the area, so if needed you will be able to find seating with a supportive back. Please do not bring lawn chairs as the NYC Parks Department expressly forbids them. There will be some yarn available but make sure to bring your own needles / hooks as the ones we have will be reserved for any beginners that attend the event. Previously completed blankets will be collected so make sure to safety pin your raffle ticket onto the blanket. Extra raffle tickets will be made available in case you lose or forget yours. Any previously completed blankets will be entered in the MAIN knit-a-thon raffle prize details at: http://www.ashidome.com/knitathon unless you specify that you would like for the entry to count towards the special Knit-Out raffle (see below). Page 4

You mentioned raffles and snacks Along with the sense of camaraderie that comes with enjoying an afternoon with likeminded crafty folks, you ll get to enjoy some snacks that are being donated for the Knit Out. We will also have yarn on hand for distribution and will provide free knitting instruction / help to beginners. Last, but by no means least, we will be holding TWO raffles at the knit-a-thon. The first raffle, held at 3 PM will consist of a knitting book and some lovely stationery. This raffle is open to all participants at the Knit-Outs regardless of whether or not they complete a blanket or swatch*. Its our thank-you for showing up. The second raffle, held at 5 PM, will auction off a Summer Fun knitting kit for those that complete** something at the event. If your name is drawn, you must be present at the time of the raffle to collect your prize. If you are absent, another person will be selected for the prize. *Knitting a blanket in an afternoon can be daunting for some knitters. That s why we re inviting folks to knit swatches / squares at the event. All the swatches we receive will be sewn together into patchwork blankets that will make a critter or two very happy. **Completion means you knit something a blanket or square and cast off. Simple, hunh? What re the food / restroom options in the hood? The closest restrooms are a short walk to Bethesda Terrace. There are also payphones located there. Foodwise, there are are delis near the train station. There are also many nice restaurants in and around the neighborhood. Page 5

How do I participate? 1. RSVP to pp_knitout@ashidome.com We need a preliminary count to see how much yarn to bring, snacks to get, etc. Liz will follow up with an email giving you her cell phone number so that you can contact her on the day of the Knit-Out 2. Show up on the day of the Knit-Out! If you re not sure about the weather, call Liz and she will let you know if the event has been rained out! It s that easy! What if I need more information? Contact Liz at pp_knitout@ashidome.com. She ll get back to you as soon as possible and help you work things out. Hope to see you there! Page 6
