You can use the METRAVOLT 7A to measure DC and AC voltages in the rated voltage ranges specified on the name plate. Furthermore, you can determine polarity as well as phase and phase sequence. The casing is made of solid rubber and protects the internal measuring element against heavy shocks, water and dust. Thanks to its high degree of protection (IP65) the METRAVOLT 7A may even be used in rain. 2 Safety Precautions The METRAVOLT 7A has been approved by VDE test authorities for application of VDE GS marking. When used for its intended purpose, the safety of the operator, as well as that of the instrument, is assured. GMC-I Messtechnik GmbH 3
In order to maintain flawless technical safety conditions, and to assure safe use, it is imperative that you read these operating instructions thoroughly and carefully before placing your instruments into service, and that you follow all instructions contains therein. Observe the following safety precautions: The voltages indicated on the METRA- VOLT 7A are rated voltages. The voltage tester may only be used in systems working with those rated voltage ranges. Faultless indication of values is only guaranteed between -10 C and +55 C. Hold the instrument by the handles only, to avoid covering the display and touching the test electrodes before and during tests. Just before they are used, voltage testers need to be checked to ensure they function correctly. Carry out the function test and check the instrument at a known voltage source - e.g. a 230 V socket. If the display of one or several systems fails in the course of checking, the instrument must not be used again. The METRAVOLT 7A must not be switched on for more than 30 seconds. For the determination of phase conductors and phase sequence by means of the accessible electrode, the perceptibility of the display may be impaired, e.g. when using protection means against direct contact, in unfavourable locations, for example on wooden ladders or insulating floor coverings, as well as in unfavourable lighting conditions and in an improperly grounded AC voltage system. The voltage tester may only be opened by our repair and replacement parts service personnel. Voltage testers must be clean and dry. 4 GMC-I Messtechnik GmbH
3 General Information The METRAVOLT 7A is equipped with keys on both sides of its handles with which you switch on the measuring element and the LED display. Without pressing the keys the instrument performs high-resistance tests and while pressing them, low-impedance tests are performed. The specified rated voltage ranges refer to the three indicating systems LCD, LED and measuring element. 4 Testing 4.1 General Information Existing voltage is directly displayed on the LCD indicator when the keys are not pressed. You can also determine phase and phase sequence. The measuring element is switched on when you press both keys. The test current becomes low-resistive as a result of the added load. 4.2 Testing voltage and polarity! Attention! The maximum allowable on-time for voltage testing is 30 seconds. Note! The internal resistance of the METRA- VOLT 7A is very high when the keys are not pressed. In extreme cases, indication of inductive or capacitive voltages may occur which disappears when both keys are pressed. AC voltage When both test electrodes are placed on AC voltage within the rated voltage range, a V- symbol is shown on the LCD indicator. When both keys are pressed, the measuring element always indicates the r.m.s. value. In addition, light-emitting diodes signal existing voltages of 50 V or more. Both LEDs light up when AC voltage is present (±). GMC-I Messtechnik GmbH 5
DC voltage and polarity When both test electrodes are placed on DC voltage within the rated voltage range, a V- symbol is shown on the LCD indicator. When both keys are pressed, the measuring element indicates the value. In addition, one of the two LEDs signals voltages from 50 V onwards. Polarity is determined as follows: The LED marked + lights up when the test probe marked + is connected to the positive pole. 4.3 Tests with the Accessible Electrode With the accessible electrode (brass button rear under the measuring element), you can perform phase and phase sequence tests. The tests can be carried out with or without the keys pressed.! Attention! While working with the accessible electrode the perceptibility of the display may be impaired (see part 2 Safety Precautions ). Note! Tests performed with the accessible electrode are only possible in systems working with properly grounded AC voltage systems at voltages of at least 165 V to earth. 6 GMC-I Messtechnik GmbH
Phase Test The phase conductor is identified by establishing contact between the test electrode marked with +L1 and the conductor and by touching the accessible electrode Pol-L1- Sensor at the same time. If the triangle is shown on the LCD indicator, the conductor is energized. Note! If the other test probe (without + L1) is used during single-pole tests, the V symbol appears on the LCD indicator in addition to the triangle if voltage is applied. Depending on the location (insulated ground), the -symbol may be indicated as well. The symbols additionally indicated are meaningless in this case. Phase sequence test To determine the phase sequence between two phases in the 230/400 V 3-phase system by applying both test electrodes and touching the accessible electrode, proceed as follows: Search for the phase conductors using one pole (see phase test). Apply both test electrodes to two phase conductors (while pressing keys: approx. 400 V is indicated). Touch the accessible electrode with your finger. When phase L1 is applied to the test probe marked + L1, and phase L2 to the other test probe, the triangle lights up if rotation is clockwise. If the triangle does not light up, the direction of rotation is counter-clockwise. Note! If 230 V is indicated instead of 400 V (while pressing keys), the neutral conductor may have been contacted with one of the test probes. A simple way of checking is by exchanging the two test probes and briefly touching the accessible electrode several times. GMC-I Messtechnik GmbH 7
