Free Events For All Ages Throughout April Croydon Celebrates The Charles Dickens Bicentenary 2012 To celebrate Charles Dickens bicentenary, the first ever City Read London takes place in April 2012 with a focus on the well known novel, Oliver Twist. There are free events in Croydon Libraries and Museum, as well as across the whole of London. Copies of Oliver Twist are available to borrow from all Croydon libraries and e-book and e-audio versions can be downloaded free from libraries online at www.croydon.gov.uk/leisure/libraries This will be London s first City Read, and it is anticipated that it will become an annual event. Charles Dickens Competition CROYDON COMPETITION: WHAT WOULD DICKENS DO? In Oliver Twist, Dickens shows his readers what it was like to be a child growing up in the nineteenth century. Imagine that you are Charles Dickens and write a short story or article about what it is like to be a child growing up in Croydon in 2012. Entries should be a maximum of 800 words and will be judged in two age categories: Ages 11-15 aged 16 and over Please ensure that your entry includes your name, address and telephone number and your age, if entering the 11-15 year category. Entries should be emailed to libraries@croydon.gov.uk or handed in to any Croydon library by Friday 4 May 2012. The top prize in each age category will be a 25 gift voucher. The City Read project has been created and developed by Stellar Libraries and London Libraries, in partnership with Dickens 2012 and Penguin Books and is the only campaign linking London s libraries to the Dickens bicentenary celebrations. 111100
