A Word from our President It s February already and time to get back to work, for those of us who enjoyed a holiday away. I know that my plan for 2016 involves a lot of painting, and I am keen to get down to it after the break. There s nothing like setting yourself a few goals to get you moving. I was reading recently that a good way to move yourself forward is to do just one additional thing different (to what you might normally do) in every painting you do. In this way, you can keep your style but move it forward in a way that is less risk prone, and more likely to succeed. In January, we once again held our annual life drawing 4 day untutored workshop. As usual, the workshop was well attended, and extremely enjoyable and successful. This was the last workshop for Clive Vogel, who has handed over the reins, and I want to thank him on behalf of all our members for the absolutely fantastic work he has put in over the years to our life drawing Proudly supported by: Wodonga City Council, Albury City Council, & Wodonga Plant Farm

2 P a g e A l b u r y - W o d o n g a A r t i s t s S o c i e t y workshops and monthly sessions. Thanks Clive for a job well done! More on what s coming up for life drawing later in this newsletter... 2016 is looking good for AWAS, and some of the upcoming opportunities to consider are: 1. For new members, it s a great opportunity to see your work on the walls of the studio, so enter a work or two in the February New Members Exhibition. Just give Christina Zey a call if you have any queries. Christina: 6040 0045; 0410 511 211; cristina2zei@gmail.com 2. For those of you who are interested there are still places left on the Japanese Sumi-e workshop at the end of February, and the acrylic workshop with Kelli McGregor in March. These are great value at just $150 for two days tuition with artists of considerable reputation. 3. Our MAMA exhibition date has now been set as 12 May to 12 June 2016, with works to be ready by 12 April, so think about what you might submit for this exhibition. Just a reminder that works do not have to be new, just fit the theme of the exhibition. (See previous newsletters for detail). 4. Acrylic work sessions on the second Saturday of each month are a great opportunity to learn more about this versatile medium, in a social context. Christina and Nancy have put together a great program for 2016, and members are welcome to come to any one or all of the planned sessions during the year. I personally reckon the fauve sessions exploring colour will be great. For more information, see our December 2015 newsletter. 5. There will be more on upcoming workshops for pastels and watercolour in future newsletters. Just a reminder that our next general meeting will be at 2pm on Sunday 21 February and our guest speaker being Jacqui Hemsley, the Director of MAMA. Jacqui will be speaking about MAMA and the various opportunities for AWAS to work with the MAMA team. Don t forget to bring a plate of goodies for afternoon tea. Hope to see you at the meeting. Until then, happy painting Barb Strand Membership Receipts If you haven t already done so, please pick up your receipt and membership card (which gives you discounts at some art shops and framers). These are in a plastic container on the table in the meeting room at the studio.

3 P a g e A l b u r y - W o d o n g a A r t i s t s S o c i e t y Spotlight On... John Mason Not having had an art teacher at my school in wartime England, my first brush with art was in 1964. We were in the throes of a Canadian prairie winter, freezing outside, and light from 10am to 3pm. For some reason I bought a basic set of oil paints and set about copying pictures from magazines, but they had little to recommend them. My second foray came in 1972 in Beechworth, whilst working at the Mental Hospital and recovering from Cataract surgery. I took some classes in Wangaratta and met up with David McDonald, who persuaded me to join him on a tutored Bill King painting week up on Kosciuszko. We painted morning and afternoon, and I suppose I managed one decent effort out of about 15. The tutor somehow found encouraging things to say about all the works done, and I was hooked. For some years I kept in touch with this group, painting down in the little desert south of Nhill for a week every Spring. With some trepidation David and I courageously joined the newly formed Albury and Wodonga Artists Society, and over the years held various positions on the committee and executive. As a group, and without a studio, we painted en plein air and hired local halls for our annual exhibitions. The tea room under the grandstand at the Wodonga Racetrack was a favourite place for workshops. I remember we were quite active in the community we ran, and judged the art sections at both the Albury and Wodonga shows, painted in the park on Australia Day and even won first prize for the best float in the Wodonga street parade. Heady days! I am sure that painting with its ability to transport you totally into another world, with totally different people all lost in creating a unique version of a chosen subject, has been an enormous help to me in keeping my perspective in dealing with my working world like music if you actually play an instrument.

4 P a g e A l b u r y - W o d o n g a A r t i s t s S o c i e t y I love your company, camaraderie and advice, especially when you say Don t you dare do anything else to that painting and I m thinking well that s the block in complete! Please bear with me if nowadays, at times, I draw a blank on remembering some of your names I m a little older than I used to be! LIFE DRAWING REPORT From everyone in the life drawing group - we are all very grateful and appreciative of Clive Vogel's hard work in organising the monthly life drawing sessions and also the fantastic 3 days and now 4 days of continuous life drawing in January. It has been an amazing opportunity for us to focus on life drawing and to explore different techniques and share ideas with each other. Clive is now stepping down as a life drawing co-ordinator and Gai Sutherland and myself, Olga Juskiw, will be sharing that role. Contacts: Gai Sutherland - 0430 436 930. Email - gai.esindi@gmail.com. : Olga Juskiw - 0447 770 735. Email - olga.juskiw@icloud.com. The recent 4 day life drawing workshop has inspired us to have an exhibition at the Paintbox Studio. The date for this exhibition is Tuesday, 8th March to Monday, 2 nd April. It is only for those who participated in the recent 4 days Life Drawing Workshop in January this year, 2016. It will be a casual exhibition of framed or unframed drawings which can have a cardboard mount. The drawings submitted are to be only those produced during the 4 day life drawing workshop at the studio this year and no other. The intention of the exhibition is to show what we did during the 4 days. The drawings can be the quick gestural ones as well as those of the longer poses. Those who worked with clay can submit the works done in the studio during the 4 day life drawing. Note that no new or other drawings or clay works are to be submitted. Participants can submit up to 3 works noting preferences 1, 2, and 3. Works must show the appropriate Studio labeling, e.g. title,
