The ADAM4EVE project The ADAM4EVE project is funded by the European Commission under the 7 th Framework Programme of Research and Development (FP7) with a total funding of circa 2,9M. The project will start on 1 st January 2013 and has a duration of 36 months. Project partners: The consortium is coordinated by the Center of Maritime Technologies e. V. () and comprises twenty partners, namely: 1
Partner Center of Maritime Technologies e. V. maritime research centre Uljanik Brodogradiliste DD - shipyard RINA Services SPA classification society Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft mbh & Co KG - shipyard Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Angewandten Forschung e. This can be achieved through external forces acting on them (actuators) or built-in properties of materials. ADAM4EVE aims to explore the application of adaptive and smart materials and structures in the shipbuilding industry. The project will focus on adaptable hull structures which can adapt their geometry to varying speeds or trim, thus improving the hydrodynamic properties and saving energy and smart and adaptive outfitting materials which can change their optical appearance, damping or insulation properties, thus improving comfort and safety and reducing the onboard energy demand. The work will be conducted in three working groups: Materials and Structures Development will make use of solutions from material sciences and other industries and adapt them to the needs of maritime applications. A solutions catalogue will be developed. Solutions Development and Testing will comprise six application case studies driven by shipyards. This phase will result in physical demonstrators, which will be designed, built 2
and tested jointly between naval architects and material scientists. The process will be monitored by classification societies to make sure that the solutions comply with existing rules and regulations or prove to be equivalent to them. The various phases of technical development will be accompanied by a continuous technical and impact assessment, based on the identification of specific risks and requirements defined in an early project phase. The group will focus on the specific application cases of the project, but will also elaborate generic guidelines for the use of adaptive materials and structures in the maritime sector and demonstrate their economic and environmental impact. The ADAM4EVE Advisory Group The application of smart materials and structures can offer significant benefits to the European maritime industry, especially through improving ship efficiency, flexibility in operation and safety. The consortium has complementary skills and competencies which will allow developing and demonstrating specific solutions for a wide variety of ship types and applications. However, the ADAM4EVE partners are of the opinion that a broader cooperation with external parties will help to improve the scientific quality of results and the probability for market uptake both by the maritime community and specialized material manufacturers. The ADAM4EVE Advisory Group aims to provide a fruitful interaction between the project consortium and a wider community, but is also intended to facilitate the exchange of information and technical discussions related to adaptive and smart materials in the maritime sector in general. The Industrial Advisory Group addresses: Potential users of the materials and structures from shipbuilding and offshore engineering (i.e. shipyards and manufacturers of offshore equipment) to define their requirements, identify future applications beyond the project, receive information about technological developments and to assess the practical relevance of the work; Material developers and suppliers to provide information and knowledge related to future trends in materials and to take up the results of ADAM4EVE to extend their scope of products and services; Approving bodies to support the identification of potential safety and environmental hazards and ensure a unified rule basis for future application; Research institutes to provide information about ongoing research and developments outside the ADAM4EVE project and to help facilitate a wider exchange of information and cooperation. The ADAM4EVE consortium will provide targeted first-hand information from the project to the Advisory Group Members. It intends to organize at least two workshops for the Advisory Group, preferably connected to other similar events and/or with practical demonstrations. No funding will be available to cover the participation of external parties in the Advisory Group. The invitation to join this group does not imply any legal right to obtain specific information. On the other hand, any declaration of a third party to join the Advisory Group does not imply any legal obligations towards the consortium or the European Commission. 3
