SEMINAR ON PARTICIPATORY COMMUNICATION IN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT Ming Court Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 30 March - 2 April 1993 PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS INDONESIA: MALAYSIA: Mr. Zaim Saidi Mr. Saidi is Director of the Public Interest and Advocacy Center in Jakarta and also Second Executive Secretary of the Indonesian Consumers Organization. He is Special Editor for Republika, a daily newspaper. Mr. Soegyarto Mr. Soegyarto is Executive Editor of ANTARA, the Indonesian national news agency. He is Chairman of the Indonesian Forum of Environmental Writers, and of the Working Group on Population and Environment of the Indonesian Journalists Association. Mr. Ahmad Ramzy Tadjoedin Mr. Tadjoedin is Associate Assistant to the Minister for Environmental Affairs, Ministry of Population and Environment. He is also a Lecturer in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia. He was formerly Special Advisor to the Minister of Education and the Minister of Youth and Sports. Mr. Mohd Hamdan Hj Adnan Mr. Hamdan is President of the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA). He is a Senior Lecturer and Former Head of the School of Mass Communication at Institut Teknologi Mara (ITM), Shah Alam. He developed and introduced the Consumer and Environmental Studies course at ITM. Ms. Anisha Susanna George Ms. George served as Publications Assistant for the Gender and Development Programme, Asian and Pacific Development Centre (APDC) and edited the Asian and Pacific Resource and Action Series: Environment. She is active in the local women's movement in Malaysia and is in contact with women, environment and development work. 1
Ms. Kiranjit Kaur Ms. Kaur is Head of the Environmental Unit, National Council for Womens' Organizations. She is a Lecturer in the School of Mass Communication, Institut Teknologi Mara, Shah Alam. Dr. Leong Yueh Kwong Dr. Leong is an Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. He is Vice-President of the Malayan Nature Society. An active environmentalist, he has led citizen's campaigns to protect national forest parks and other local ecosystems. Ms. Charlene Rajendran Ms. Rajendran is a Lecturer at Taylor's College in Kuala Lumpur and Facilitator for Teater Muda, a youth theatre staging environment and developmentoriented plays. Ms. Maheshwary Ramasamy Ms. Ramasamy was Project Coordinator of an IDRC-AMIC- FOMCA Project on Using Traditional Media in Environmental Education. She works as Administrative Secretary for the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Assocations. Ms. Alina Ranee Ms. Alina is an environmental chemist who works as a Specialist Writer for The New Straits Times. She writes features on environment, population, and women's development issues. Ms. Nor Esah Said Ms. Nor Esah is a librarian with the Malaysian News Agency, BERNAMA. She coordinated the documentation work and the field observation trip for the seminar. Ms. Zaharah Salamat Ms. Zaharah works as an Environment Control Officer in the Department of Environment, Malaysia. Mr. Gurmit Singh Mr. Singh is President of the Environmental Protection Society of Malaysia, and Executive Director of the Centre for Environment, Technology and Development, Malaysia. He is a Member of the Environmental Quality Council of Malaysia. 2
Mr. Zainoor Sulaiman Mr. Zainoor is Editor for Corporate Services, BERNAMA. He is AMIC Country Representative for Malaysia. He was responsible for coordinating the local arrangements and the press coverage of the seminar. Mr. Azman Ujang Mr. Azman is a journalist of 21 years' experience. He is Editor of Features and Foreign News for Berita Nasional Malaysia (BERNAMA), the national news agency. Ms. Josie Zaim Ms. Zaim is President of the Education and Research Association for Consumers in Ipoh, Perak, Co-Chairman of the Working Group on Environment, International Organization of Consumers Unions (IOCU), and a Member of the National Consumer Protection Council, Malaysia. PHILIPPINES: Ms. Rina Jimenez David Ms. David is a Journalist who writes a daily column on environment, development and women's issues for the Philippine Daily Inquirer, a national daily. She is a Member of PILIPINA, a national women's organization and a Commissioner in the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women. Fr. Francisco B. Lucas Fr. Lucas is a member of the Steering Committee, Green Forum Philippines, an umbrella organization for environmental NGOs. He is a Catholic priest with 2 0 years' experience in social development and development communication. He manages two community-based radio stations in two Philippine provinces. He is Director for Training and Programming of Bayanihan Broadcasting Corporation, network of 4 3 community-based radio stations in the Philippines. Dr. Ricardo V. Serrano Dr. Serrano is a former journalist who became a career officer in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Philippines where he is now Director of Information and Public Affairs. He is also Chairman of DENR's anti-pollution programme in Metro Manila. 3
THAILAND: Mr. Agerico M. de Villa Mr. de Villa is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy, University of the Philippines, Diliman. Author of two books (Social Political Philosophy, Ethics and Logic), he teaches Philosophy of Science, Political Philosophy, and Environmental Philosophy. He is a Member and former Chairman of the University Committee on Environmental Concerns. Mr. de Villa is also a Member of the government's Environmental Management Bureau and Environmental Impact Assessment Review Committee. Ms. Kannigah Asavadorndeja Ms. Kannigah is an Assistant Professor, Department of Public Relations, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University. She was formerly Director of a UNEP-assisted Environmental Education Project. She is a media consultant to the Pa Sak River Dam and Reservoir Feasibility Study and Environmental Impact Assessment, and to the Land Development Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. Ms. Kanchana Kulpisithicharoen Ms. Kanchana is Secretary of Green World Foundation, an environmental NGO based in Bangkok. She was formerly a researcher on environment issues at the Social Research Institute, Chulalongkorn University. Mr. Noel Rajesh Mr. Rajesh is a researcher working for the Project for Ecological Recovery, an NGO involved in environmental issues related to Thailand. Mr. Rajesh is co-author/ editor of a book on forests in Thailand. Mr. wirasak Salayakanond Mr. Wirasak is a former journalist who wrote for The Nation and the Thai News Agency. He is now Executive Director of the Press Development Institute of Thailand, a journalism training organization. He also edits the Thai version of DEPTHNEWS and InterPress Service. AMIC SINGAPORE Dr. Victor T. Valbuena (Seminar Director) Dr. Valbuena is a Senior Programme Specialist and Head of AMIC's Seminars and Institutional Development Proramme. He was Director of AMIC's Projects on Using Traditional Media in Environmental Communication. 4
