Hickmotts of Cranbrook KENT 1550-1840 (last updated 10 March 2012) Sources: LDS IGI; Cranbrook Parish Registers (KFHS): C (1559-1812), M(1559-1837), B (1559-1812); Mid-Kent Marriage Index; Ancestry.com All England & Wales Marriages, 1538-1940 02 Oct 1598 William Henry HICKMOTE/Anne COGGER Cranbrook We now think that William may have been born at Horsmonden in around 1570, the eldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hickmote nee Kingswoode of that village. He died and was buried at Cranbrook in 1636. William s last will and testament indicates that he was a butcher and owned land and properties in both the parishes of Cranbrook and Horsmonden. His properties at Cranbrook were left to his oldest son William (see his details below). Those at Horsmonden were willed to his youngest son Thomas (to be assumed once Thomas reached the age of 26). Susan McAlpinbe tells us that Anne was baptized at Sandhurst in Kent on 18 November 1576, the daughter of Simon Cogger and Agnes Leeche. She and William lived at Cranbrook after their marriage and had nine children there: William (1600-56), Thomas (1602-3), Mary (1604-51), Anne (1606-75), Katherine (1609-75), Richard (1610), Patience (1612-13), Elizabeth (1616) and Thomas (1618-86). Anne was buried at Cranbrook on 3 November 1648). Elizabeth (18 Aug 1616, Cranbrook; William & Ann) [15 Dec 1618 Willm HICKMETT/Elizabeth BEALE Canterbury ] The local parish registers show that an Elizabeth Beale was baptized at Cranbrook on 10 June 1593 and 11 December 1597 (no parents mentioned). We think that William died at Cranbrook in 1656. His last will and testament indicates that his wife was Elizabeth, he had a brother Thomas, and at least six children: William, Thomas, Mary who married Edward Vincle, Judith, Jane Rappon (?) and another daughter who married Edward Glover (?). Thomas (21 Feb 1618, Cranbrook; William snr) Mary (21 Feb 1619, Cranbrook; William jun) 03 Oct 1620 Mary HICKMOTE/Rychard VYNCETT Cranbrook Probable children: Mary (1625), John (1628), Peter (1629), William (1632), Robert (1633), Richard (1635), Priscilla (1737), Stephen (1641) and Samuel (1643). Mary probably died at Cranbrook in 1651 and Richard in 1652/3. Wm Hickmoate (16 Apr 1620, Cranbrook; William) Thomas (11 Nov 1621, Cranbrook; William jnr) John (18 May 1623, Cranbrook; William jnr) 19 Jan 1625 Katherine HICKMOTT/Alexander WELLER Cranbrook Susan McAlpinbe tells us that Alexander was baptized in Cranbrook on 20 July 1595, the son of Dence Weller and Joan Hovenden, and that he died and was buried at Cranbrook in 1648. Probable children: Joane (1626), Anne (1627), Kath (1628), Dence (1629), Alex (1631), Elizabeth (1634), Mary (1638). 16 Oct 1625 Ann HICKMOTE/Peter ADAMS Cranbrook No record of Ann and Peter having children baptized at Cranbrook. Her husband, Edward, was a butcher of Chatham and the sole executor of William s will. According to Susan McAlpinbe Mary and Edward had at least four children, all born at Chatham: William (1643-65), Edward (1645), Nathaniel, Thomas and Mary Vincle. 07 Nov 1642 John HICKMOTE/Susanne ROGERS Cranbrook John was born at Cranbrook in 1623, son of William and Elizabeth. Known children all baptized at Cranbrook: Elizabeth (1644), Leonard (1645-45), John (1646), Mary (1648-9) and Leonard (1650). We think that John may have died at Cranbrook the following year. No record yet of Susanne s death. 01 Apr 1642 Agnes HICKMOTE, wife Cranbrook 3

Leonard and Rebecca lived at Cranbrook after their marriage and had at least one child there: Leonard Hickmott, baptized on 9 July 1744. We think that Leonard snr died at Cranbrook in 1757 and Rebecca in the Poor House there in 1784. Their son, Leonard, may have married Elizabeth Austen at Cranbrook in 1763.
