General Operation: When it is advantageous to run a Map Oil Tools Cement Retainer on tubing or drill pipe, a mechanical setting tool is used. It is designed to contain the upper slips of the cement retainer in a safe retracted position while running to setting depth. The upper slips are released by right hand rotation and slack off of the work string. The cement retainer is then set and locked to the casing by pulling the appropriate amount of tension against the tool. The slide valve is in the open position while being run into the hole. When the setting procedure is completed, the slide valve may be closed by picking up (2) two inches at the tool or opened by slacking off (2) two inches at the tool. With the slide valve in the closed position, the work string may be hydraulically tested. The mechanical running tool is released from the cement retainer by right hand rotation. The setting tool contains a built in snap-out feature which provides approximately,000 # snap out indication when the work string is picked up to close the valve. This tension indicator is reengaged each time the work string is lowered to open the slide valve. The mechanical setting tool is equipped with drag springs to assure positive control during running and setting procedures at all depths or in highly deviated wells. The mechanical setting tool may be converted from use with a cement retainer to a bridge plug by changing the top coupling, stinger sub, and removing the stinger seal. Special Notes: It is recommended to run a gage ring, bit, and casing scraper to setting depth, then circulate two full casing columns to clear debris from the wellbore. When there is possibility that you will have difficulty stabbing back in to the retainer due to wellbore deviation, it is recommended that centralizers be run above the mechanical setting tool. If wellbore fluids or debris may be present, it is recommended that rotational release occur after completing pumping operations as debris that falls into the ID of the tool may prevent the valve from functioning properly and may prevent the setting tool from stinging back into the tool. Running Instructions: 1. Make up the top sub of the running tool to the lower pin end of the work string. Use a good quality, API approved thread lubricant and torque all work string connections to the manufacturer s torque recommendations. During run in, extreme care should be taken to avoid right hand rotation being transmitted to the setting tool. As a precaution, one left hand turn should be placed in the work string every 10-1 stands. 2. When the desired setting depth has been reached, tools should be picked up (2) two feet above the desired setting point. This movement is necessary to provide the required tool stroke to release the cement retainer upper slips and allow the setting tool nut to move freely. 3. Rotate the work string to the right sufficiently to transmit 10 turns to the tool. This rotation will thread the control nut off of the mandrel s mating thread and release the control sleeve and setting sleeve form the controlled position. 4. Lower the tools back down to the desired setting point, the drag springs will support the control sleeve and setting sleeve of the setting tool. The downward motion of the mandrel will move the cement retainer upper slips form under the setting sleeve. The slips are forced outward toward the casing wall by the leaf springs inside of each slip segment. When the slips are released, there is sufficient clearance for the locking dog to move outward and release the control latch form the stinger sub body.. Pull the recommended tension over pipe weight (at the tools) to set the slips and affect full pack off. SIZE TOOL MIN. TENSION MAX. TENSION 4 1/2-1/2 2,000 30,000 6 /8-7 3,000 4,000 7 /8-20 40,000,000 6. Set down the equivalent amount of weight and pull tension a second time. Once the tool is set, slight up strain may be applied to shift the valve closed, at which point the tubing can be tested. 2

7. Release the setting tool from the cement retainer by pulling 00 lbs. of tension at the tool and rotating the work string 10 turns to the right. This motion will shear the brass shear screws and unscrew the setting tool control latch from the top of the cement retainer mandrel. 8. The setting tool may be re-latched to the cement retainer by setting down 1000-3000 lbs. of work string weight. Set down weight equal to the calculated weight required to prevent the slide valve from closing during pumping operations. Always hold and monitor 200 psi pressure on the annulus while squeezing through a cement retainer. Recommended max flow rate is bpm. Higher flow rates may be achieved, but variations in pump volume, fluid density, fluid viscosity and pump rates will have varying effects on stinger and retainer shoe wash out which may result in the retainer s inability to close and isolate wellbore pressure below the tool. 9. Now you may snap out of the retainer by pulling 000-8000 lbs. tension at the tool. The setting tool seal will remain in the cement retainer until the control snap force is exceeded. Each time the control latch is snapped in and out of the retainer, the force required to do so will be reduced until the force to snap in reaches 00 lbs. and the force to snap out reaches,000 lbs. SPECIAL NOTE: In wells where paraffin or suspended solids are present in the well bore fluids, the dog in the control latch may not fully release from the stinger sub body. This is indicated when the cement retainer sets properly, per steps 1 thru 4, but the slide valve will not close so that a tubing pressure test can be performed. In this case, the tubing should be alternately picked up and slacked off. This motion will cause the dog to move outward on the inclined edges of the control groove in the stinger sub body and free it for the required vertical motion. If this condition is known to exists before the run is made, it is recommended that the mandrel, stinger sub body, control latch, and control sleeve be packed with grease to prevent the intrusion of trouble fluids. Mounting the Mechanical Set Cement Retainer to the Mechanical Setting Tool: 1. Place the top collar of the setting tool in the vise. 2. Move the drag assembly downward until it positions the control nut clutch and the control nut adjacent to one another. Rotate the mechanism to the right until it engages the clutch and stops. 3. Rotate the setting sleeve toward the drag assembly until the upset of the control latch is exposed. 4. Slide the upper slips over the stinger sub body. Loosen the clamp on the slips only enough to slide them over the upset on the control latch and then retighten the clamp.. Lubricate the non-wicker portion of the slips with grease. Rotate the setting sleeve downward over the slips until the setting sleeve contacts the hose clamp. Remove the clamp from the slips and continue rotating the setting sleeve downward until it bottoms out against the wickers of the slips. Back the setting sleeve off 3 turns. Check to see that the clutch mechanism is still properly shouldered. Readjust the setting sleeve, if necessary. 6. Lubricate the stinger sub and latch lightly with grease. 7. Slide the cement retainer over the stinger. (Make sure that the retainer remains level during this operation. Special care must be taken to ensure that the stinger properly engages the valve collet fingers.) Drive the retainer on to the stinger seal until it shoulders on the latch thread.(use a wooden block for this operation.) Bump the bottom of the retainer and rotate it to the make up the LEFT HAND thread on the latch until the retainer bottoms out on the control latch. 8. Align the threaded holes of the retainer body with the corresponding holes in the control latch and install the shear screws. (4 1/2-6 /8 there is only one set of holes, 7-8 /8 will used lower holes, 9 /8 on up will use upper holes.) 9. Rotate the setting sleeve downward until it contacts the wickers of the slips. Back up ½ turn and install the set screws in the setting sleeve. 10. Install the hose clamp about the wickers of the upper slips and tighten for transportation purposes. REMOVE THE HOSE CLAMP FROM THE SLIPS BEFORE RUNNING THE TOOLS INTO THE WELL 3
