Discovering Color Materials needed: Red, Yellow, and Blue food coloring Water Eye dropper or turkey baster 6-8 Clear plastic containers or cups Optional White ice cube tray or Styrofoam egg carton This is a fun and easy activity for young learners to help them discover how colors mix to make other colors! To set up the activity, fill 6-8 clear containers about halfway with water. (Or use 3 clear containers and 1 ice cube tray or egg carton, leaving reservoirs empty.)
1. Add 2-3 drops of red food coloring to one of the water-filled cups, blue to one, and yellow to one. Leave the water in the other containers clear. 2. Show your child how to use the eye dropper or baster to pull the liquid up into the reservoir and squeeze the bulb to squirt it out. 3. Instruct your child to practice pulling up one color and add it to one reservoir in the ice cube tray/egg carton, or to one of the cups with clear water. Now, have your child choose another color and add it to the same cup. What happens to the color? 4. Give your child time to continue to explore what happens when other colors are mixed. How many colors can you make? Bonus tip: For an extension of this activity, freeze colored water in ice cube trays and pop the cubes out into a bowl. Let kids experiment with adding colored ice cubes to colored water in containers. As the ice melts, what happens?
