November 2018 OPTIMIST NEWS Club of St. Charles, Missouri In this issue: Events calendar Program Reflections: Board Actions Member Spotlight Speakers Preview From the President (Jack Ross) New & Improved Optimist Hour At the board meeting ON October 23 rd, the Board voted to have an Optimist Hour on each fifth Thursday rather than randomly. This will start Thursday January 31, 2019. This isn t like new improved Tide. What will make these events an improvement is TURNOUT. So, the burden in on you, the Optimist Club members, to make the Optimist Hours New and Improved. 2019 dates are January 31, May 30, August 29, and October 31. Happy Thanksgiving! No meeting on November 20th. Enjoy time with your family! Optimist events only occur if members are willing to serve as chairs and volunteers. Please review the attachment/ list of events planned for the year and let President Jack Ross know what events you are willing to chair or co-chair. Let s make this the best, most Optimistic year yet! Thanks!! A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. 1

BOARD ACTION At the October Board meeting, the 2018-19 Budget was approved! 2

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Fred McGinley Tell us a little about yourself. I retired in July from Fred's Complete Car Care after 24 years. I love spending time with my wife Lori, traveling and enjoying life. Hobbies include playing golf, cycling and running. What is something that most members may not know about you? I was educated as an accountant and passed my CPA exam. Why did you choose to become an Optimist Club member? I joined Optimist Club to meet more people in the community and potentially help increase business. It was successful on both motives. Joe Kloeppel came by Fred's promoting his Edward Jones business and also the St. Charles Optimist Club. I remember coming to the first meeting and feeling nervous, but everyone made me feel very welcome. What has been your fondest memory related to the club? My fondest memories were the 2009 Festival and all the fishing derbies I was able to participate in. Also, during my time as president from 2010-2012. What do you hope to see the club do in the future? I would like to see the club recruit younger members. 3
