Keynote Arnold Marks, Jr. Arnold Marks, Jr., lives and works in Tanana as a secondary language arts/social studies teacher at the Maudrey J. Sommer School. He is the school s basketball coach and athletic director. Arnold is a Doyon Class C shareholder and a member of the Tanana Tribe. After graduating from the Maudrey J. Sommer School as valedictorian, Arnold attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he played collegiate basketball while pursuing a bachelor of arts in English. He received his teaching license after attending the UAF School of Education and then returned home to teach. Arnold s parents are Mary Edwin (Dennis) and Arnold Marks, Sr. (Dinette) and his grandparents are the late Laura and Peter Mark Sr. of Huslia and Lula and John Wallace of Fairbanks. Arnold and his wife, Theresa (Sam), are raising their two daughters Reese and Isabella along the Yukon River in Tanana. Arnold has competed in the Yukon 800 boat race many times and won in 2006. He and his brother Aaron also finished the Iron Dog five times, representing their family and community well. When he is not in the classroom or racing on the Yukon River, he can be found hunting, coaching, camping and traveling in the region.

Shareholders of the Year Elizabeth Fleagle, Hannah Paul Solomon Elder of the Year Award The Hannah Paul Solomon Elder of the Year award recognizes an elder, age 55 or older, who has devoted his or her life toward the betterment of Alaska Natives. The award is named in honor of the late Hannah Paul Solomon, who dedicated her life to teaching the younger generation traditional ways. Floyd Leroy Green, III, Chief Andrew Isaac Leadership Award The Chief Andrew Isaac Leadership Award recognizes a person age 35 or younger, who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities. The award is named in honor of the late Chief Andrew Isaac, who emphasized the importance of education for youth to become leaders of tomorrow. Shirley Lee, Daaga Community Service Award The Daaga Community Service Award recognizes a community or individual who shows strong commitment, competence and sensitivity in helping others to make their community a healthier and safer place to live, and whose accomplishments have directly affected Alaska Natives. Sherman Thomas, Richard Frank Military Service Award The Gin tith (Richard Frank) Military Service Award recognizes an Alaska Native who demonstrates a strong commitment and willingness to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces in the defense of the United States of America. Andrea Durny, Citizen of the Year Award The Citizen of the Year award recognizes a person who has demonstrated leadership, strong commitment, competence and sensitivity in the educational and cultural survival of Alaska Natives. Recipients may be chosen for contributions in the fields of health or education, maintenance of a traditional lifestyle, or for the example they set as parents.
