The ultimate guide to Klaipeda and the Curonian Spit The ultimate Klaipeda guide and the Curonian Spit travel tips We have been traveling through the Baltic countries for the past three weeks. We have visited beautiful Tallinn, vibrant Riga, awesome Vilnius, amazing Jurmala and peaceful Otepaa. But nothing can be compared to Klaipeda and the Curonian Spit! These places are like the hidden gems of Europe, still undiscovered and heartbreakingly beautiful. The unspoiled nature, amazing beaches and the pristine forests look like they ve been taken out of the fairy tale. We have so many Curonian Spit travel tips to share with you that we are really excited for this post. We ve created an ultimate Klaipeda guide in hope that you will manage to visit it before everyone else does. There are not many places like this in this world. Local, authentic and unspoiled. So pack your suitcase, book a flight and.. just go!
Klaipeda guide The Old Town Old Town of Klaipeda is quite small- you can walk through it in less than 15 minutes. Even though it is not a vibrant place, we really loved it. You don t have to beat the crowds when you go there. You can really enjoy the quiet and peaceful time surrounded by the beautiful architecture and monuments. The Theatre Square with the sculpture Annchen von Tarau is consider as the heart of an Old City in Klaipeda. There are many small hidden sculptures in the Old Town, so walk around and try to find as many of them as you can! Our favourite is the statue of The Black Ghost, you can find it at the pier at Zveju street.
Another great tourist attraction to visit is The Castle Museum. There was a big and beautiful castle in the past in Klaipeda but it was destroyed several times. It is being restored right now and they plan to finish the work in 2020. The museum is available to visit though, so be sure to go there! You can learn there a lot about the history of Klaipeda, which is surprisingly complicated. The other three museums worth visiting are The Blacksmith s Museum, The History Museum of Lithuania Minor and The Museum of Clocks.
Meridianas The big, white ship is a landmark of Klaipeda. It is standing in the heart on an Old Town and cannot be missed by any traveler visiting the city. It is both a tourist attraction and one of the best restaurants in Klaipeda. Meridianas has a long and tumultuous history, it was the USRR ship in the past. Two years ago it has been renovated and now you can find there the brand new, luxury restaurant. No matter if you want to have a dinner or not, be sure to get inside the ship. You can watch there a short movie about Meridianas that will help you understand the importance of the ship for the people of Klaipeda. Klaipeda guide tip: The real captain is working on Meridianas, be sure to find him to get to know even more about the ship!
Where to eat? There is a one place where you can find everything you need. It is called Friedricho Pasazas. There are six restaurants there including bakery, pizzeria, winery, steakhouse, high-end restaurant and tavern, where you can try traditional Lithuanian food. Where to stay? Michaelson Boutique Hotel The hotel was open few months ago and it has already became one of the best places to stay in Klaipeda. It is situated within the walking distance to the Old Town, right next to the pier. Michaelson is just PERFECT! We are traveling the world for a long time, this year we ve been staying in more than 30 hotels and Michaelson is one of the best of them all. Luxury room, comfortable bed, useful facilities, beautiful bathroom, fast WiFi are the things we liked the most. And the breakfast! It is out of this world. The food is freshly prepared for you (you can actually see it because of the open kitchen) and it s really delicious.

It is a perfect place to stay for all the foodies. You will have the best restaurants in Klaipeda right on your doorstep! The location is perfect, in the centre of Old Town, within the walking distance to all the tourist attractions. The room is big, comfortable and luxurious. The things we liked the most are the heated floor in the bathroom, the kitchenette and an unique design of the hotel. Check out the latest prices for Friedricho Guesthouse > click here.
AirBnb We are huge fans of Airbnb and we will always recommend renting an apartment for those of you who like to feel like home while traveling. It is also a great choice if you want to stay in Klaipeda longer than just few days.
Curonian Spit The beautiful Curonian Spit is the main reason why people are visiting Klaipeda. It is located on the peninsula, it means the only way you can get there from Lithuania is by ferry. It is connected with land in Belarus. There are two ferry terminals to Curonian Spit operating in Klaipeda: Smiltynė Ferry Terminal The main one, where you can travel with your own car. Curonian Spit is 50 kilometres long, so it is really recommended to take your vehicle on peninsula. The ferries are leaving every 30 minutes, you don t need to book anything online, just go to Smiltyne and wait in line. You pay the price depending on how many people are in the car. For two of us we paid 11 euro both ways.
Cruise Ship Terminal The smaller terminal, only for pedestrians and bikers. Curonian Spit travel tips & useful info General informations There are two main Lithuanian towns at Curonian Spit: Juodkrante and Nida. There are some hotels and restaurants there, so you can stay on the peninsula for a night. There is one gas station and Maxima grocery store in Nida.
Best places to see Curonian Spit is famous from the unspoiled nature. There is a 50 kilometres long beach there, so it is definitely the best tourist attraction on the peninsula.
The thing we liked the most are dunes in Nida. You have to climb up to get there but the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking!
The buildings on the peninsula are unique and colourful. We have never seen something like them before. It is worth to visit the Ethnographic Fishermen s Museum in Nida to get to know a little bit more about Curonian Spit and its people. The other great tourist attractions on the peninsula are: Thomas Mann Museum and Amber Museum in Nida & Witches Hill and Dendrological Path in Juodkrante. The full list of tourist attractions in Neringa, you can find here. Disclosure: We want to thank Michaelson Boutique Hotel and Friedricho Guesthouse for complimentary stay.
