Weather and Light: On A Journey with Turner The starting point for Weather and Light, A Journey with Turner, was a dogeared book* that retraced Turner s journeys through the hills and dales of Northern England. What intrigued me most was the difference between Turner s sketches and paintings of the places he visited and the rather low contrast, black and white photographs that depicted them in recent times. I wanted to undertake some of his journeys to see not just how those places may or may not have changed but also to glimpse perhaps the inspiration behind them. Not wanting to set out and recreate any kind of stylistic interpretation of Turner s work, I focused instead on the places I visited along the way. I did find the spots he painted, some were hidden from view or had been turned in to a visitor attraction or trail but some had remained untouched just as he would have seen them. I worked in situ, making paintings and I have to admit that at first it was like having a ghost looking over my shoulder. As the project progressed, Mr Turner s presence became more that of a companion on a journey. I sought inspiration not only in the places he painted but also in the subjects he tackled rivers, castles, lakes, hills and the sea. I visited Cumbria, Yorkshire, the Malverns, Oxford, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. David Atkins, 2014 *In Turner s Footsteps by David Hill purchased in 2006 from a charity shop.
