EVENTS AND WORKSHOPS: ALL AGES RAKU WALK THROUGH FACILITATED BY Buchanan Art Center Raku Crew Volunteers All ages welcome (Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.) SATURDAY MAY 28, 10:00 a.m.. - 6:00 p.m. Arrive no later than 3:00 p.m. to glaze and fire. WALK-IN, NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED Pre-made pieces available for firing as priced $10- $25. Price includes glaze and firing. Just walk in buy a piece of pre-fired pottery (handmade and donated by BAC potters) and glaze your piece. ALL GLAZING MUST BE DONE ONE HOUR BEFORE FIRING to allow time for drying. The entire process takes approximately 3 hours. While waiting for your pots to dry, be sure to check out the Buchanan Art Center exhibits and gift shop. Everyone is welcome to come and just watch the fun! ART BOOK BONANZA! RAKU FIRE DRAGONS #1 MORNING CLAN RAKU FIRE DRAGONS #2 AFTERNOON CLAN On the first Monday, students will study the history of dragons and their meaning in different cultures, then sculpt their own original versions in clay. The second Monday, students will apply glazes to their dragons, write them a biography, and prepare them for hibernation until the firing day. On firing Saturday we will watch the dragons go into the flames in the kiln and magically emerge minutes later in beautiful new colors and breathing smoke. Each child must be accompanied by an adult to supervise on the firing day. We encourage adult chaperones to purchase a premade piece of pottery to glaze and fire themselves, bring a camera, bring a lawn chair, and join the fun! Using a sketchbook, students will record their observations of the insects, birds, flowers, and plants in the garden, and interpret their observations into a variety of art projects that focus on the vibrant summer colors. The studio will be supervised by facilitators who are not there to instruct, but to answer questions about studio policies and proper use of equipment and materials. Students will work independently and should responsibly observe all posted studio policies which are provided to each student. Students MAY NOT use the studio at any other time except to attend class, briefly check on, or pick up work. Each registered student will receive 8 three-hour non-transferrable passes that must be signed, dated and given to the facilitator at each visit regardless of whether or not they stay the entire 3 hours. Abuse of this privilege will result in the cancellation of extra studio time for the student for the remainder of the session. No previous experience necessary! Just bring yourself in some clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty. Each student will create their own gnome home, for their garden, from clay forms that come from our clay extruders, a.k.a. "Play Dough Factories." In the first class, students will use stoneware clay slabs to shape a shelter and imprint their own unique designs using stamps and texture tools. In the second class, students will glaze their homes, which will then be fired and available for pickup on Tuesday, July 12.
