Abstract PASCO scientific is the leader in the development of data collection tools and software for science and math educators. Pasco enables electronic measurement through probeware and sensors, electronic data collection through dataloggers and data analysis through software applications. The new Xplorer GLX captures, analyzes, annotates, stores and prints data quickly and seamlessly, without being connected to a computer. Historically, visible light was used for studies on the structure of matter, its properties and for qualitative and quantitative analyses. Recently, however, new techniques have been developed that utilize not only visible light, but many other forms of electromagnetic and non-electromagnetic radiation:, radio waves, microwaves, ultraviolet, x-rays, electrons, phonons (sound waves) and others. 1
Study of interaction between light and matter is may defined as spectroscopy. Spectroscopy is used in physical and analytical chemistry for the identification of substances through the spectrum emitted from them or absorbed in them. Electromagnetic radiation is also heavily used in astronomy and remote sensing. Most large telescopes have spectrographs, which are used either to measure the chemical composition and physical properties of astronomical objects or to measure their velocities from the Doppler shift of spectral lines. Pasco and Vernier equipment will be utilized by students while they will work in the area of infrared, visible and ultrviolet radiation. In IR they perform measurements of black body radiance, measurement solar radiance and simulate a non-contact temperature sensor. With use of light sensor students will compare light intensity vs. distance, study of interference, diffraction, polarization, and measure relative light intensities in daylight. With the ultra violet sensor students will conduct a sky survey of UV light, investigate effectiveness of UV protection from sunglasses, windows or sunscreen lotions. 2. Objectives The goal of this proposal is to obtain funding to introduce interactive technology based on educational software and hardware interfaces. Scientific software combined with computer interfaces blends science and technology together to form dynamic teaching and learning tools to enrich educational process of high school science classes. Science is vibrantly brought to life by using remote sensing components and interfaces. Therefore, students can easily comprehend and understand the basics of science and technology. Moreover, students can use technology-based experiments in creative, effective and quick ways. Excellent use of computer data graphics and effects will enhance laboratory activities, which will reflect broad research and application of critical thinking skills. Furthermore, computer display will give quick notable insight or understanding of the topic; and will compel the student's attention. Therefore, the focus will be maintained throughout the interactive technology activities. WAVEPORT SOFTWARE, SINGLE USER CI-6872D $59.00 Students will have the opportunity to learn about waves and sound in an interactive manner. WAVEPORT engages students' senses, allowing them to see, hear and feel sound waves. WAVEPORT software uses only the internal sound capability of the computer, so no additional equipment is necessary. WAVEPORT also enables students to collect and analyze sound waves. Using an external sound source or a favorite music CD, students can see the changes in the sound waves as they change the input sound. Students can whistle into the computer microphone and observe the waveform on the screen. Next, they can change the pitch of their whistle and see the changes in the waveform. Students will: conduct and observe experiments, collect data, do calculations, graphing, analyzing data, and write laboratory report with conclusions. AN ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION PLAN. Students will be evaluated based on two factors: Involvement in the interactive computer lab (participation points) Completed lab report: data, calculations, questions, conclusions, etc. All laboratory reports with attached laboratory worksheets will be checked and evaluated by teacher. 5
