He earned a B.S. in Chemistry from University of California-Berkeley in 1936, an M.S. in Oceanography from Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, CA. in 1951, and a Doctorate in Oceanography from Scripps Institute in 1958. Lyman worked for Union Oil for several years and then entered Scripps Institute for graduate studies and as assistant oceanographer. He was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Naval Reserve in April 1941, and during World War II served at the Naval Proving Ground, Dahlgren, VA. He was a member of the Navy's Ordnance Technical Mission to Japan in 1945-46, and a member of the Oceanographic Team of Joint Task Force One at the 1946 Bikini atomic tests. Lieutenant Commander Lyman separated from active duty in late 1946. After the war, Lyman joined the Navy Hydrographic Office, Suitland, MD. In 1961, he transferred to the National Science Foundation in 1961, and then to the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, Department of the Interior in 1964. He retired from the Federal service in 1966 and was employed as a consultant by UNESCO and the Naval Research Laboratory. In 1968 he joined the Consolidated Universities of North Carolina, holding joint professorships at UNC-Chapel Hill and NCSU-Raleigh. He retired from the University in 1973, the same year he also retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of captain, after 32 years of service. He died on November 17, 1977 in Chapel Hill, NC. John Lyman was a research associate of the San Francisco Maritime Museum since its inception in 1951, and the leading authority on Pacific Coast maritime history. Lyman laid the foundation for Pacific Coast maritime history with his thumbnail sketches of the careers of Pacific Coast vessels, published in the Marine Digest during World War II. As an oceanographer, he traveled the world buying books in his free time. At his death, his library was appraised as the best private collection on Pacific maritime history in the world. The John Lyman Reading Room at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park was named in his honor. Custodial History Accession No. SAFR-1 was transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park from Golden Gate National Recreation Area which acquired the collection from the San Francisco Maritime Museum when it became a unit of the National Park Service. The item was donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum by the estate of John Lyman. P05-004 3
