Soccer Legend It was Monday, September 20, 2010, and President Roger Cox called us to order in the Marriott Ballroom, filled with Rotarians, guests and hangers-on for one of our greatest shows ever a guest visit from soccer legend Landon Donovan, the American and international superstar who memorably scored the goal that put the United States in the second round of the 2010 World Cup. (Robert Guilford arrived with his two school-age children, prompting Donovan to ask, Aren t you supposed to be in school? ) President Roger, just back from a family reunion in the Old Blighty, introduced a few people to let our distinguished guest know what we do in the world, to wit: Service Legends Vinny Fazzino is organizing his biggest trip of the year to the orphanage in Ensenada, October 21-24, with the newest building project led by Randy Meadors. Rotary is Service Above Self dictionaries to students..we happily inducted new member Mark Curran, sponsored by Don Redman. And we signed a card for one of our service dynamos, Rich Ham, undergoing melanoma surgery on September 21. The Beautiful Game No question, we were there to hear from Landon Donovan, whose visit was made possible by Ray Padilla, who works with the L.A. Galaxy. Ray told us Landon gets many invitations (do you think maybe?) but jumped at ours when Ray told him of our service work indeed, Donovan started out with the words, Service Above Self. We saw a video of The Goal, heard briefly from Donovan, and then he took questions. A boy from Redlands, who developed his childhood athletic skills by just playing outside, he was inspired by Wayne Gretzky and Magic Johnson because of the overall skill set they brought to their sports. He commented on vuvuzelas, the French team implosion, Liverpool, MLS vs. Premier League, AYSO, and much more. He s a huge fan of all sports, with a secret dream of owning an NFL team and a more immediate post-career goal of working with kids. OK, I admit it, I was dazzled. But the really fun thing? He was dazzled by Rotary, by the opportunity for service it provides. Still, it s pretty cool when the little club I joined so long ago can now gather up members like Ray Padilla who spend their Brownie Points bringing us a treat like this. Thank you, Ray! (And be well, Rich!) Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett
Rotary is Service Above Self Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Katie Gleason, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help Katie keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make June's job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you're not sure it's a make-up--hey, tell her anyway! Rotary Make-Up Clubs - 12:15pm Rotarians Participate at Weekly Meetings!
