The Call of the Lathe To me, there is no greater joy in woodturning than introducing someone to the craft and helping him or her perfect the skills needed to be successful. Oh sure, I love woodturning myself. That is why I spend so much time in the shop. But it is such a pleasure to see someone to whom you have taught something be able to apply that information or skill and do it well. In February we had our first Skill Enhancement session with three members turning, one watching, and another helping. Our intention is to expand that effort to two times a month in hopes of being able to reach more of our members whose schedules may not jive with the one time. We haven t really settled on just when to do this so your suggestions are certainly welcome. I know weekends may be best for most but with woodturning already taking up three Saturdays a month for me, I am trying to keep one of those open. We are thinking mostly in terms of a weekday evening but know many of you have set events on certain evenings which is why we will likely go to two a month. I propose that, at least for April, we devote the morning of the first Saturday to Skill Enhancement. We are not planning a regular meeting that day because we are having our soon to be annual Anniversary Party that evening. But since we all have that Saturday morning blocked out anyway, it may be a good day to enhance our skills. But we need lathes, don t we? Well, yes, mostly, but some of you may want to enhance your sharpening skills, too, so some can spend time working on that. Besides, the club is now the proud owner of a Delta Midi lathe, one of the early ones. In fact, it is only three serial numbers past the one I have and identical to it. We still intend to get another lathe for FHW when we receive our grant funds from the American Association of Woodturners but this lathe was an unexpected opportunity which we just couldn t pass up. With my three, the club s soon-to-be two, and Randy s willingness to bring his new Delta Midi, we will have six lathes on the floor for Skill Enhancement. Come on out! As we approach Spring, those of us who are turning in an unheated garage will be getting pretty excited about the warmer weather. We can throw open the garage door and let all that dust drift outside without freezing us out of the shop. If your turning skills have rusted a bit over the winter, consider seeking a mentor to help get you tuned up so you can really enjoy the good weather to come. Randy Zelenka, our Vice President, is keeping a list of those who would like to be mentors and will match you up with someone who can help. Just see Randy at a meeting. So much going on! Monthly meetings, Skill Enhancement sessions, new lathes, public demonstrations, library materials soon to be ordered, and just a great time coming together to share the joy of woodturning. Thank you for being a part of it. Tom Boley Potluck Saturday, April 2nd 5:00 to 8:00 PM First United Methodist Church 612 Poyntz Ave, Manhattan 2

Meeting Minutes February 2016 The monthly meeting of the began at 9:00 am, February 6, 2016, at RedOak Hollow Lathe Works, 4025 Walnut Creek Drive, Wamego, Ks. President Tom Boley called the meeting to order with 27 people in attendance, including two first time visitors. Several items were presented for Show and Tell. March 4th thru the 6th, and also for the demo at the Discovery Center. Programs Director David Delker announced that a segmenting symposium would be held in Boston on October 27 30, 2016. He discussed data from the email survey that he had conducted. Top choices were artistic design, critique of work, and finishing. President Tom Boley announced that an officers meeting would follow the regular meeting. All members were welcome to attend. New business cards were passed out to the members. These cards were designed by Bob Holcombe, and can be used as an easy method to promote the club and recruit new members. President Tom Boley discussed the raffle and silent auction that were held at each meeting as a fund raiser. Everyone was encouraged to participate. All members were encouraged to pay their dues for 2016. Many thanks to Lisa Zeller for the bulk glue purchase. Several members took advantage of the reduced price for CA glue and activator. President Tom Boley was pleased to announce that had been successful in their grant application to the AAW. The club received a grant in the amount of $1500.00 to be used to start a library, and to purchase a midi lathe. A big thank you to David Delker and Randy Zelenka for their time and effort. Please let Vice President Randy Zelenka know of any DVD s or books that you would like the club to purchase. Also the club will accept donations of DVD s or books. President Tom Boley asked if anyone would be interested in the job of librarian. He asked the members to consider volunteering. Officers Report: Newsletter Editor Bob Holcombe announced that he would submit our newsletter to the AAW newsletter contest. Each year the AAW holds a contest for the Best Chapter Newsletter. He also asked for suggestions on items of interest to the club members, and reminded members of the classified section. Operations Director Don Eisele reminded members that volunteers would be needed for the Home Show, David has joined with the Kansas City and St. Louis woodturning clubs in a calendaring project. This will allow the clubs to keep track of each club s events and guest speakers, the idea being to share the cost of bringing demonstrators from the outside. Treasurer Tom Shields was absent. Secretary Dan Zeller asked for suggestions on the minutes. President Tom Boley announced that the club would hold a potluck dinner on Saturday, April 2nd, in celebration of our first anniversary. The dinner will be held at the Methodist Church on Poyntz Avenue. Vice President Randy Zelenka discussed details of the grant and how the club has been proactive in education, both in the community and thru the mentoring program for our members. He also stated that there is a wealth of information and knowledge on the AAW website. Discussion was held on a club membership list. Privacy concerns were discussed as well as the benefits of a membership list with pictures. It was decided to proceed with a list. This hood protects the user s eyes and provides filtered air to breathe. Bob Holcombe discussed the benefits of power sanding and different types of equipment for power sanding. He stressed the importance of a sharp tool and the benefits of a good finishing cut to minimize sanding. He also recommended cleaning the surface of your project of dust before moving to the next grit of sandpaper. Lisa Zeller demonstrated epoxy wood filler and discussed its benefits and many uses. Due to the variety of colors and durability, it can be of great benefit to a wood turner. Don Eisele demonstrated how he uses pour-on 2 part Famocoat Glaze Coat for a water tight finish.
