President's Message Dear Orchid Friends: If you have not read my "Special Edition" letter sent to our members on 8/11/17, Subject: " Diablo View Orchid Society Auction : The Morning After", please take a look. Thank you again to all who contributed to the phenomenal success of this fund raising event. The 2017 auction results exceeded our expectations. Make sure you attend this annual event in 2018! Speaker Topics: Orchid growing is challenging and rewarding! You are encouraged to indicate what "Orchid Topics" are of interest to you. A questionnaire will be provided for this purpose at our next meeting. Volunteer Opportunity at our Show & Sale Orchid Extravaganza First Lutheran Church, 4000 Concord Boulevard, Concord, CA 94519 Set-up Oct 6 5pm until we have completed set-up of plants for show and judging Show Oct. 7 10am-5pm Please bring your flowering orchids to be exhibited, admired, enjoyed and awarded. Greenhouse Tour May of us took the opportunity last month to visit some our local expert orchid growers at their place of business. Orchid species and hybrids not generally available were there to be admired and, in some cases, available for purchase. It was a special occasion to "unite" with DVOS members in the quest of additions to our collection. We filled the bus with plants!! Thank you for your support of business who support us! Here is another chance, although short notice, to fuel the orchid fever: California Orchids, Bolinas, has an open house Sept. 16th. We car pool to this location. Stay tuned for specifics at our Sept. 14th. meeting. Note: Change in October Meeting Schedule to the 3rd Thursday of the month. The October meeting will be on October 19th, at the usual location and time. This is a one time exception. Show and Tell Table: Thank you for sharing your success. It is an inspiration to see the beautiful plants we can grow. If you need help with your efforts, just let us know. We are here to help you enjoy this wonderful hobby. See you Thursday, Sept. 14th at 7:15. Cheers, Renate

Our September Speaker Bruce Rogers has been growing, hybridizing and decorating with orchids for over 30 years. He began his professional career in the late 1970s when the city of Atlanta Parks Department hired him to work with its orchids in the greenhouses in Piedmont Park. Returning to San Francisco after this endeavor, he was hired by the Rod McLellan Company as the head grower for the boarding department and to hybridize Vandas. In the early 1980s he left to start Bruce Rogers Orchids, an orchid consulting and management company based in San Francisco. In 2002 Bruce joined Terry Root of the Orchid Zone and co-founded OZGARDENS, a business devoted exclusively to hybridizing and growing Sobralias. Since Terry's retirement, the Sobralia nursery has been part of Bruce Rogers Orchids. Bruce is a frequent guest lecturer. He is on the Advisory Council at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers and is the Ambassador for the San Francisco Orchid Society. His book "The Orchid Whisperer" has remained the best selling orchid book for five years See also Bruce's websites: www.brucerogersorchids.com and www.brucerogersorchids.com/images/growingsobralias.pd f Plant Table will be provided by our speaker
