The Secret of the Top On the last night of Hanukah, my family always has a big party for all of my relatives. The cousins, uncles and aunts and grandparents from both sides of the family are invited. It is a very special night for all of us. Everything looks beautiful! There are plates of potato pancakes and doughnuts and also different kinds of cold drinks on the dining room table. In the middle of the table is our hanukiah. This year it is my turn to light the eight candles and sing the Hanukah blessings. I am almost 13 years old and my Bar Mitzvah will be in two more months! All of the relatives are here! Grandfather Max asks everyone to stand around the table as I light the candles and sing the Hanukah blessings. Then we all sing Hanukah songs together and eat from the delicious potato pancakes and doughnuts that my mother and aunts have made. Come children! my grandfather says. It s time to play with Great-grandfather Aaron s top! Great-grandfather Aaron is my grandfather Max s father. He died many years ago in Germany, but before he died, he gave my grandfather Max a Hanukah top and asked him to keep it safe. Every Hanukah we play games with this special top. Who will be the first to spin the top this year? asks Grandfather Max. I think David will be the first! He will soon have his Bar Mitvah! But as Grandfather takes the top out of his pocket, it falls on the floor and breaks. Everyone suddenly stops what they are doing. No one says a word. We all know how special this top is to grandfather. I slowly pick the broken top up, but at the same time see something shiny inside. Look, Grandfather! A gold coin and a note! Grandfather opens the note and with tears in his eyes says, The note is from my father. It is in German. I will tell you what it says, The one who finds this gold coin will keep it and pass it down to his children in the Hanukah top as I did. It will bring good luck to the one who keeps it safe. Now we all know the secret of the top and I promise to keep it safe! 20
