SPEAKERS IN DETAIL Keynote Speakers John Hopson Head of User Research BUNGIE Matthew White Data Scientist DEEP SILVER VOLITION Spencer Stirling Lead Data Scientist ACTIVISION Data-Driven Player Personas in Destiny Telemetry & Analytics in Open World Games Unsupervised Anomaly Detection in High-Dimensional Game Data Destiny s game design was influenced by datadriven personas at several key points. During the initial design phase, retrospective analysis of Halo gameplay revealed the existence of the omnivore playstyle which became part of Destiny s core design. After Destiny was released, segmentation of the playerbase exposed a complex multi-stage player lifecycle, identified key retention/churn factors, and shaped the ongoing development of the game. This talk will cover the development and application of the personas, as well as techniques for involving and persuading design stakeholders. Developing open world games can be a joy, but it also presents a unique set of design challenges. Because of this, we often look to telemetry and user research to give us an idea of how our game is progressing through development. Unfortunately, open world games often integrate core systems in a piecemeal manner, often leaving key game elements out of the build until moments before submission. For this reason, detailed refinement of missions, objectives, and outcomes becomes difficult. This talk will discuss how Volition accomplishes predictive analysis of user behavior using in game telemetry in open world games, focusing particularly on the Saints Row Franchise While anomaly detection in time-series data is well-studied and ubiquitous (e.g. spike in tweets, stock prices, clicks, ), detecting anomalies in high-dimensional data remains somewhat of a black art. Games like Call of Duty stream thousands of metrics, e.g. player movements, weapons, ping times, etc. Unfortunately, it is not always clear how to harvest signals that appear normal naively (normal in any single metric), but are nevertheless unusual when taken as a complex whole. Examples could be cheating, network outages, a whale ready to start spending, etc. In this talk I will describe the basic difficulties, and I will relate our experience with two algorithms. 5
