National Faculty Catherine was brought up in England, a middle child who learned to knit and sew at an early age. She and her husband moved to Naperville, Illinois in 1995 and she discovered quilting in 1998. She is a member of her local guild and cofounder of the Naperville Modern Quilters Guild. Catherine has appeared on Quilting Arts TV and is a regular contributor to Modern Patchwork magazine. Catherine believes we all have an innate need to create, and quilting is her outlet of choice. Catherine believes quilters have the right to choose the elements of the craft that bring them joy. She encourages students to try all the processes involved in finishing a quilt, but accepts that there will be some who find joy in making tops by machine while others enjoy handwork and still others love to machine quilt. That s OK! That s where teamwork comes in and there s a whole community of quilters out there willing to help. Southwind Designs, which began in 2000, was developed to offer students unique quilting patterns that were easy, fun and could be done by any level of quilter. Owner wanted to teach quilting in a way that would put her students at ease in a relaxed atmosphere and provide a new spin on traditional patterns and quilts. Since then, Annette has produced over eighty patterns and two books, one of which, Peeled- Back Patchwork: Curves without Piecing, was published through AQS in 2004. Her current book, Curves without Piecing, is an AQS booklet published as part of their I Love to Quilt series. Annette also developed the Dimensional Curves technique to simplify the process of piecing curved quilt block shapes for her students. Annette was born in Germany and currently lives in Fayetteville, North Carolina, with her husband and their three dogs. 2 QUILTED CON 2016 Friday, October 21, 2016 QUILTED CON Master Schedule Lecture/Trunk Show 7:00 pm Saturday October 22, 2016 SA-1 Walking Foot Quilting SA-3 Northern Frost Sampler 9:00 am - 12:00 pm SA-5 Project Bag Sunday October 23, 2016 SA-2 Mexican Star Dance SA-4 Circle of Geese 9:00 am - 12:00 pm SA-6 I Spy Quilt Lecture/Trunk Show 7:00 pm Sunday Morning Sew 7:00 am - 12:00 pm SU-7 Happy Scrappy Improv Quilts SU-9 Binding Class Vendors! Lecture and Trunk Show Lessons Learned While Quilting 7:00 pm Friday An inspiring and entertaining, yet informative, lecture and trunk show. Lessons learned while quilting - with many samples. SA-1 Walking Foot Quilting All day Saturday Learn to finish your quilts on a domestic machine while enjoying all the control of your walking foot. We start with a brief discussion of preparing your tops for quilting including marking and basting. Then make stitched samples of different styles including modern grids, matchstick quilting and spirals. Finish with a look at Catherine s work to inspire you to turn your tops into quilts! SU-7 Happy Scrappy Improv Quilts All day Sunday Have you looked at modern improv quilts and not known where to start? Bring a bag of scraps, a neutral solid and your happy thoughts! We ll look at a few examples, discuss some techniques, including adding narrow strips and gentle curved piecing, and get to stitching. Make one, and maybe two, small wall hangings ready to take home and quilt! Lecture and Trunk Show Dimensional Curved Piecing or Peeled-Back Patchwork 7:00 pm Saturday Dimensional curved piecing or peeled-back patchwork is fast, fun and so much easier than it looks. Quilts may look complex, but they all share a dimensional secret, which makes piecing curves very easy. Through numerous original quilts and examples, everyone can see how dimensional curves actually work. SA-2 Mexican Star Dance All day Saturday Mexican Star Dance is an expanded version of the popular "Mexican Stars" pattern. The dimensional piecing technique consists of layering and inserting folded fabric pieces into the seam line of a pieced unit or block. When the bias edge of a folded square is turned back and stitched down, a curve appears. The curved edge is then secured by topstitching close to the fold. Pattern required, $10, class supply list will have details. SU-8 Midnight Flowers All day Sunday Easy strip-piecing with dimensional curves. This table runner can be made in two sizes, short 17 x 31 or long 17 x 46. Pattern required, $8.50, class supply list will have details. Save the Dates!
