Population growth and expansive urbanization In 2010, 50% of the world s population are living in the cities They represent only 1% of the planet s land area, By 2050, this is expected to rise to 75% To cope with this movement, cities must be continually transformed To increase their capacity To provide new services (such as housing, healthcare, efficient logistics, greater connectivity, transportation, water supply, energy, etc.) To enhance the quality of life 3
Current situation 2/2 ICT changed the way we live and work Several systems (as egov, ehealth, elearning, smart transport, etc. ) emerge and provide enhancement of live ability, sustainability and economic benefit. Towards Smart cities : Key aspects Connected devices is reshaping our lives use ICT to provide urban services in a smarter/predictive way overcome challenges posed by rapid urbanisation introducing smart cities improving the quality of life of citizens transform the relationship between local entities, enterprises and citizens providing a new way to live in the city analyze and use data efficiently for managerial and decision-making purposes leading to substantial savings in time, effort, and cost 5
How shall we do it? Basic technological components needed Devices as Sensors (IoT) deployed in large numbers // smartphones, smart TV, sensors, etc. Wide connectivity to allow the best communication between devices and components Interoperability of components (systems) Data // Databases (IS), social network, Sensor data, open data, etc. A platform to aggregate all data and use it to make/propose decisions at speeds exceeding human capacity (near real time) Security 6

Smart cities Maturity Dimensions KPMG proposes a «Smart City Maturity Model» grouped into 5 dimension areas: - Dimensions 1 to 4 allow to assess capabilities that are necessary for truly Smart City - Dimension 5 allows to assess if the the smartness is integrated into the different aspects of city life. 17
What are the trends of Smart cities? Infrastructure & data Level High speed communication service is expected to provide a better communication between IoT devices. It will help existing devices operate smoothly and effectively and paving the way for introducing new ones (devices) IoT based city solutions are essential for all services which need sensors such as Street lamps lighting the way, smart grid, vehicle and pedestrian monitoring, traffic light control, smart parking, real-time traffic-information, waste management, etc. Open data based solutions 18
