Current situation 1/2 حال مدننا? Population growth and expansive urbanization In 2010, 50% of the world s population are living in the cities They represent only 1% of the planet s land area, By 2050, this is expected to rise to 75% To cope with this movement, cities must be continually transformed To increase their capacity To provide new services (such as housing, healthcare, efficient logistics, greater connectivity, transportation, water supply, energy, etc.) To enhance the quality of life 3

Current situation 2/2 ICT changed the way we live and work Several systems (as egov, ehealth, elearning, smart transport, etc. ) emerge and provide enhancement of live ability, sustainability and economic benefit. Towards Smart cities : Key aspects Connected devices is reshaping our lives use ICT to provide urban services in a smarter/predictive way overcome challenges posed by rapid urbanisation introducing smart cities improving the quality of life of citizens transform the relationship between local entities, enterprises and citizens providing a new way to live in the city analyze and use data efficiently for managerial and decision-making purposes leading to substantial savings in time, effort, and cost 5

How shall we do it? Basic technological components needed Devices as Sensors (IoT) deployed in large numbers // smartphones, smart TV, sensors, etc. Wide connectivity to allow the best communication between devices and components Interoperability of components (systems) Data // Databases (IS), social network, Sensor data, open data, etc. A platform to aggregate all data and use it to make/propose decisions at speeds exceeding human capacity (near real time) Security 6

Smart cities: Definitions 1. "the safe, secure, environmental and efficient urban centre of the future with advanced infrastructures such as sensors, electronic devices and networks to stimulate sustainable economic growth and a high quality of life» 2. «engage in learning and evidence-based policy-making in order to improve their services and infrastructure and, in this process, make use of advanced ICT. - ICT are used to improve connectivity at the infrastructure level (M2M), at the level of services (H2M) as well as at the group or personal level (H2H). - Given the right conditions, this improved connectivity contributes to resource efficiency, hence also to environmental sustainability, as well as to the betterment of governmental services thus, indirectly, to the reduction of social inequalities and increased societal participation» 15

Smart Cities = multiple Smart Xs Each city has its own specific needs to improve each area Main categories: Smart mobility: Smart public transport, traffic management, etc. Smart envirnment: samrt grid, Waste managment, public lightning, etc. Smart Economy: ecommerce, mobile marketing, crowdfunding, etc. Smart People: open data, city services, digital universities, open education, etc. Smart Living: healthcare, education, cybersecurity, etc. Smart Governance: election, communication campaigns, 16

Smart cities Maturity Dimensions KPMG proposes a «Smart City Maturity Model» grouped into 5 dimension areas: - Dimensions 1 to 4 allow to assess capabilities that are necessary for truly Smart City - Dimension 5 allows to assess if the the smartness is integrated into the different aspects of city life. 17

What are the trends of Smart cities? Infrastructure & data Level High speed communication service is expected to provide a better communication between IoT devices. It will help existing devices operate smoothly and effectively and paving the way for introducing new ones (devices) IoT based city solutions are essential for all services which need sensors such as Street lamps lighting the way, smart grid, vehicle and pedestrian monitoring, traffic light control, smart parking, real-time traffic-information, waste management, etc. Open data based solutions 18

What are the trends of Smart cities? Applicatiosn Level // Citizen centered Transportation: ways to increase on-demand, flexible structure of ridesharing and public transit ridership are expected Electric vehicle infrastructure that supports EV chargers is needed. So. municipalities are required to install electrical infrastructure in mutiple places 19

What are the trends of Smart cities? Governance Level Equity and inclusivity are required! otherwise cities run the risk of widening the gap between the rich & the poor and between neighborhoods Government/Citizen Collaboration: greater real-time citizen interaction with government through personal wireless devices is expected. involve private citizens : convincing citizens to get involved in the development of Smart Cities is needed Cybersecurity : secure ways of integrating IoT technologies and increase awareness about cybersecurity are required 20

Opportunities Reduce usage and costs by automatically reducing consumption of Water, Energy, etc. Facilitate access to health through digital tools, including seniors Encourage citizen participation in the creation of the city Involvement of citizens with collaborative projects through dedicated portals Boost the economic growth, while having a sustainable management of resources Improve a city s environmental sustainability, affordability, business climate 22

Conclusion It feels we re reaching a tipping point in terms of smart city adoption! It becomes a reality 23
