In its fifth year, the Foundation s mission is to: Broaden public understanding of systems for protecting intellectual property Sponsor awards to recognize outstanding achievement in the fields of invention, creativity, and IP rights Publish reports and articles dealing with legal, economic, and other aspects of intellectual property rights

The 6th International Judges Conference will bring together as many as 100 internationally recognized judges, as well as intellectual property attorneys and other interested parties. Registration information will be available in the fall of 2010 at www.ipoef.org. Images from the 5th International Judges Conference, held in 2009. At right: Hon. PTO Day will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC. Visit www.ipoef.org for more information.

Public Awareness With additional fundraising, the Foundation will continue to develop a broad-reaching public awareness campaign that emphasizes how the intellectual property system encourages innovation and creativity and strengthens the national economy. Public Awareness Video Spotlight On: The U.S. Patent System In 2008, the Foundation produced a 5-minute educational video for PBS member affiliates with the goal of educating the public on the importance of the U.S. Patent System. Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway personal transporter, is featured in the video entitled Spotlight On: The U.S. Patent System. During his interview, he says, The patent system is nothing more than a way to encourage people to innovate... to take risks... to make the world a better place. Also featured in the video are interviews with Dr. Donald Keck, co-inventor of telecommunications fiber optics, and Dr. Amar Bose, inventor of Bose sound systems. Coming Soon! IP Video Contest The Foundation plans to launch an IP video contest for teens and young adults in 2011. The goal is to reach a broader audience about the importance of intellectual property rights and innovation.

Foundation Awards At right, 2010 Inventors of the Year Thomas Stevenson, George Lahm, and Thomas Selby. National Inventor of the Year Award In its 37th year, the award recognizes America s most outstanding recent inventors and increases public awareness of current inventors and how they benefit the nation s economy and quality of life. The Foundation seeks inventors from all fields of technology whose innovations have improved the human experience. Ideas feed the world The Foundation s 2010 Inventors of the Year, George P. Lahm, Ph.D., Thomas P. Selby, Ph.D., and Thomas M. Stevenson, Ph.D., of DuPont, discovered Rynaxypyr, an advanced insecticide that protects growers crops from damaging pests. Rynaxypyr is the first commercialized anthranilamide, a chemical class of insecticides that exhibit a new biological mode of action. A combination of high efficacy, low-use rates and an excellent environmental profile make Rynaxypyr a sound choice for growers, farm workers and consumers.

Distinguished IP Professional Award In 2010, the Foundation honored Chief Judge (Ret.) Paul R. Michel, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, with the Third Distinguished IP Professional Award for his outstanding leadership and lifetime commitment to invention and innovation.
