According to a recent World Health Organization report (Obesity and overweight factsheet, January 2015), worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980. In 2014 1.9 million adults 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 600 million were obese. The worldwide prevalence of obesity are high at 2008 to 2015 at upper middle incomes. 42 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese in 2013. Raised BMI is a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases. Overweight and obesity adversely affect blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides and insulin, and increase the risk of coronary heart disease, ischaemic stroke, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis and several types of cancer breast, colon, endometrium, kidney, oesophagus and pancreas.
