Level 6 Suitable for: young learners who have completed up to 300 hours of study in English Type of English: American Headwords: 1200 Key words: Key grammar: 20 (see pages 2 and 6 of these ) past continuous, reported speech, common phrasal verbs with non-transparent meanings, indefinite pronouns (someone, anyone) Summary of the story When Carl Fredericksen was a young boy he wanted to be an adventurer like his hero, Charles Munz. Ellie, his childhood friend, shared his love of adventure, and together they made a promise to go to Paradise Falls in Venezuela, South America. Years later, Carl and Ellie are happily married. They live in the old clubhouse where they used to play together. Carl becomes a balloon-seller at the zoo where Ellie works. Over the years, they save money for their trip to Paradise Falls. But every time they get close to their dream, they need the money for something more urgent. Sadly, Ellie dies before their dream can come true. Carl is about to be moved into a home for the elderly when he has an amazing idea. He ties thousands of balloons to the clubhouse and takes off to Paradise Falls. Carl doesn t realize it at first, but a young boy, Russell, is on board, too. He wants to help Mr. Fredericksen to get his Wilderness Explorer badge for helping the elderly. In the jungle near the Falls, Russell finds a very tall and colorful bird. He calls it Kevin, but they soon discover that the bird is female and that she has babies. She goes back to her nest to protect them. Hundreds of fierce dogs are looking for the bird, and soon they find Russell and Carl. They lead Carl and Russell to their master Charles Muntz Carl s explorer hero. Muntz had disappeared years ago looking for the bird. In the end, Carl and Russell manage to save Kevin and her babies from the now obsessed Charles Muntz and return home to the USA. The clubhouse floats off and lands in its resting place at the top of Paradise Falls. Carl has made Ellie s dream come true and has found happiness in his friendship with Russell. Background information Up is a Pixar Animation Studios production distributed throughout the world by Disney. It was released in 2009 and was Pixar s tenth movie production. The movie was directed by Pete Docter, the director of Monsters, Inc. The characters in the movie are based on very simple shapes and lines so the audience senses their personality as soon as they appear. Carl s basic shape is square to show how stuck he is in life. Russell s basic shape is a circle showing how optimistic and lively he is. The movie won many awards, including the Academy Award for the Best Animated Feature Film, and for the Best Original Score. Did you know? Paradise Falls is based on Angel Falls, the world s highest waterfall, in Venezuela, South America. 1 www.pearsonenglishkidsreaders.com M01_UP_REA_06GLB_8764.indd 1 07/06/2016 13:43

The characters Carl Fredericksen loved adventures as a young boy. As a man, he still dreams of traveling with his wife, Ellie, to Paradise Falls. Ellie shared Carl s dreams of adventure as a young girl. She is happily married to Carl. Russell is a young Wilderness Explorer. He wants to help Mr. Fredericksen so he can get a badge for helping the elderly. Kevin is a tall, colorful bird. She wants to protect her babies. Dug is one of Charles Muntz s dogs. He is friendly to Carl and Russell. Alpha is the leader of Muntz s dogs. He is very fierce. Charles Muntz was a great explorer. He wants to show the world that the skeleton of the tall bird he found long ago is real. Topics and themes Geography Carl and Russell s adventure in Venezuela provides a good starting point for talking about the countries of South America and finding out more about them (their capital cities, what they produce, geographical features, etc.). (See also Activity 2 on page 4 of these Teacher s Notes.) History The beginning of the story is set in the past. Ask the students to point out the things on pages 3 10 (text and illustrations) that seem dated or old-fashioned. (See also Activity 4 on page 5 of these.) Exploration Ask the students why exploration and adventure is so important in the story. Do they know the names of any famous explorers? Would the students like to be explorers? If so, where would they like to explore? (See also Activities 1 and 4 on pages 4 and 5 of these.) Art The story could provide inspiration for various art projects, such as a collage of the house floating with all the balloons, or paintings / sculptures of Paradise Falls and its surrounding landscape. (See also Activity 3 on pages 4 and 5 of these Teacher s Notes.) Science: floatation The story could be used as a starting point for exploring the scientific principles behind why balloons and airships float. Do the students know why helium gas is used? (It is lighter than air and safer than gases like hydrogen.) (See also Activity 5 on page 5 of these.) Following your dreams Carl and Ellie shared the dream of going to Paradise Falls. Do the students think it is important to have dreams? What dreams do they have for the future? Does it matter if your dreams don t come true? Making promises Carl made a promise to take Ellie to Paradise Falls. Muntz promised to show the world that the skeleton of the bird was real. Is it important to always keep promises? Helping others Russell wants to help Mr. Fredericksen, but Carl doesn t want help What do the students think about this? Should we always try to help others? Relationships Carl and Ellie are childhood friends who later marry. Carl and Russell become friends during their adventure. What makes a good relationship? Bravery Carl and Russell are very brave in the story. Ask the students to give examples of their bravery. Have the students been brave in their own lives? Death Ellie dies in the story. How does Carl feel about this? What does he do to make himself feel better about her death? 3 www.pearsonenglishkidsreaders.com M01_UP_REA_06GLB_8764.indd 3 07/06/2016 13:43

Class Activities (After Reading) Here are some activities to do with your class after reading Up. 1. My Adventure Book Materials: sheets of colored paper; colored pens; sheets of white paper; glue; scissors; hole-punch; ribbon Ask the students what they remember about Ellie s Adventure Book in the story. Ask the students to think about what adventure they would most like to experience in their lives. Brainstorm some ideas. Ask the students to imagine that their adventure has actually happened. Students write the story of their adventure in their notebooks. Help students with ideas, grammar, and vocabulary. Hand out the materials. The students create their Adventure Books, copying out their adventure onto pieces of white paper, then pasting them onto sheets of colored paper to make a book. They should also include drawings. Help the students to punch two holes through their sheets and to thread a length of ribbon through the holes to tie the book together. The students design a cover for their Adventure Book. 2. Venezuela project Materials: atlas, globe, or map of the world; pictures of Venezuela downloaded from the internet; large sheets of colored paper; sheets of white paper; colored pens or pencils; glue; scissors Before the session, find out some information about Venezuela (its capital city, language, population, main products, flag, etc.) Ask the students where Venezuela is (South America). Can anyone point to Venezuela on the map or globe? Ask the students if they know anything else about Venezuela. Tell the students some additional facts and information. The students research some additional information from books or the internet and write down at least ten facts about the country in their notebooks. (This could be done as homework.) Give a large sheet of colored paper to each student. Give each group of students some sheets of white paper, the colored pens or pencils, glue and scissors. The students then make a poster about Venezuela. They copy out their facts and illustrate them with their own drawings or downloaded photos. 3. Angel Falls diorama Materials: shoe boxes (ask each student to bring one to class); paints and brushes; sheets of white paper; colored pens; scissors; glue; card (optional); plasticine (optional); pictures of Angel Falls in Venezuela and the surrounding landscape (tepuis, etc.) Before the session, make a diorama of Angel Falls as an example for the students to follow: Remove the lid from the shoe box. Turn the box onto one of its longest sides. Cut away the uppermost side so that it is open at the top. Paint Angel Falls directly onto the back of the box, or draw it onto a sheet of paper first, then stick it to the back of the box. Add jungle scenery to the left and right sides of the box. Paint the base of the box with jungle scenery, then add plasticine sculptures of tepuis (flattopped rock formations). The tepuis can also be cut out of card and glued into the scene. 4 www.pearsonenglishkidsreaders.com M01_UP_REA_06GLB_8764.indd 4 07/06/2016 13:43

Show the students page 9 of the reader (Ellie s painting of Paradise Falls). Explain that the Falls in the story are based on Angel Falls in Venezuela. Show the students some pictures of Angel Falls and the surrounding landscape, including jungle, tepuis, etc. Hand out the materials. Students can make their dioramas individually, or in pairs or small groups. 4. Explorers from history Before the session, find out about some famous explorers from the past (e.g. Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, David Livingstone). Ask the students if they know the names of any famous explorers. Do they know anything else about these people? Where did they explore? Ask the students to find out more information about a famous exploration. They write a few paragraphs in their notebooks and include a drawing / drawings. (This could be done as homework.) 6. Interview Mr. Fredericksen Divide the class into pairs. Explain that they are going to perform an interview with Mr. Fredericksen after he returns from Venezuela. Ask the students to decide who will be Carl and who will be the interviewer. Ask the students to write their script. The students interview each other. Go round the class and monitor their work. The students swap roles. Ask some volunteers to perform their interviews in front of the class. 5. Balloon experiment Materials: a balloon; a small plastic bottle; a drinking straw; 1 teaspoon of baking soda; juice from a lemon; around 40 ml of water Stretch the balloon so that it is easier to inflate. Pour the water into the plastic bottle. Add the baking soda and stir it with the straw till it dissolves. Pour the lemon juice into the bottle. Quickly put the end of the balloon over the top of the bottle. The balloon should inflate. Ask the students why they think the balloon inflates. (The soda reacts with the acid in the lemon juice to produce CO 2. The gas rises and inflates the balloon.) 5 www.pearsonenglishkidsreaders.com M01_UP_REA_06GLB_8764.indd 5 07/06/2016 13:43
