2018 Strategic Plan The purpose of this plan is to evaluate, allocate, focus and optimize your personal resources to direct the growth of your business. It will provide the blueprint for a unique business model in alignment with your values, needs, abilities, circumstances and the problem you want to solve. You are the first resource of your business and its biggest obstacle. You are the common denominator in every decision you make for your business. Section 1: Self-assessment of my values, motivations and talents. Values: What I really care about. 1. Choose time and experiences over money and material possessions. 2. Keep things as simple as possible. 3. Challenge the status quo and make it happen. 4. Family first. 5. Be frugal, not cheap. 6. Work from anywhere. 7. Always be myself.

Motivations: What excites me to take action. 1. Talking to people in person or via video chat about self-employment. 2. Questions from people who want to become self-employed. 3. Listening to other people s self-employment journeys. Talents: What gives me confidence. 1. Recognition. Getting emails, comments and any other verbal feedback about how I have helped someone along their self-employment journey. 2. Validation. Each time there is a news story about how another aspect of the 20th-century industrial economy is declining. 3. Community. Each time my community grows or I can help someone else grow their community to support a new vision of work. Section 2: Evaluation of my personal resources. Energy 1. When is my peak performance period (when do I do my best mental work)? 7am to 11am 2. How many hours of sleep do I get each night? How do I relax and restore? 9 to 10 during the fall/winter and 7 to 8 during spring/summer 3. What activities or circumstances make me feel sluggish? What energizes me?

Eating carbs, drinking alcohol and not meditating regularly and being around negative people who aren t open to change drain my energy. Being outside in the sun (preferably at the beach) travel, being around creative people doing their thing in their own way, in-person conversations and talking in front of a group energize me. 4. What are the circumstances that make me feel anxious? Not having a clear direction or a lack of focus. Worrying about money. Not prioritizing my projects. 5. How many hours a day do I sit? About 8 hours a day, about half the time I m awake! Something I want to reduce despite all the walking and exercise I do! Money 1. How much money do I need to make each month to live my current lifestyle? I need to contribute a minimum of $2500 to our household income. 2. How many months can I survive on my savings? 60 months 3. How much money do I have to invest in my business and personal development? $8,000 4. What is my overall biggest source of unproductive spending? I have pretty much cut out all my unproductive spending, but I could eliminate all spending on alcohol, which would save me roughly $50/month.

5. How much is my total debt? $175,000 (mortgage and a bed) 6. How many customers do I need to feel financially sustained? 300 members Time 1. How much time do I have to spend working on my business? 35 hours a week 2. How much time do I schedule for self-reflection each week? 1 hour a day 3. Which 3 work activities do I currently spend the most time on? Writing Planning Reaching out Connections 1. Who do I already know who can help grow my business I haven t already asked? Several people in my LinkedIn Network, my former broadcast clients and contacts I have working at universities. 2. Who are my most important mentors?

I have a lot of great business, content and marketing advisors, but I could benefit from seeking out a couple of new mentors knowledgeable in self-awareness/mindfulness, basic income, cryptocurrency and economists studying the future of work. 3. Who is in my mastermind? Zach, Ricardo and the LSTM Mastermind 4. Who are my biggest fans (my most important members)? The members of the Life Skills That Matter Mastermind. Skills 1. What is my most marketable skill? Creating content, specifically online courses. 2. What is my area of expertise? How to become self-employed. 3. What skills do I naturally possess that can create value for me? My ability to reach out, connect and engage other people interested in self-employment. Unique Advantage What about my past experience, my talents, my connections, my circumstances or my stage in life can be leveraged to accelerate the growth of my business? My 17-year journey experiencing the future of work, so I can explain to others how to do it more quickly than I was able to do by avoiding many of the mistakes I made.

Section 3: Evaluation Of My Focus. My Purpose What am I willing to keep struggling over no matter how many obstacles get in my way? To train people for the future of work. I ve learned and experienced too much over the past 17 years not to share what I ve learned. It s my responsibility. Problem I m Solving What is the problem my business is solving and how am I solving it in a unique way rooted in my strengths? I am helping people get unstuck in their work by teaching them new skills to make them more resilient and valuable as work as we know it completely changes through online courses and by building mastermind communities to support people through their transition into self-employment. People I Am Serving What group of people have the problem I m trying to solve? What is the specific niche I m focusing on first within that group? People who are starting out or starting over. People in these mindsets are most receptive to my message. One niche I want to focus on in particular in 2018 I believe will be most receptive to my message are college students about to graduate and those who are recently graduated (have been in workforce less than 2 years).

The second niche I will focus on is anyone who considers themselves as starting over in their career and wants to make the transition from employment to self-employment. My Core Work Habits What are the 3 most important work habits that will have the greatest impact on the growth of my business? 1. Writing and creating content. 2. Reaching out and engaging anyone interested in self-employment. 3. Speaking to groups about the future of work, whether in person or online. Tracking Progress What is my primary measure for success and how am I tracking my progress? How many questions I answer about self-employment, whether it s verbally, via email, social media or forums. I will track the questions I answer in a spreadsheet. Section 4: Intentional Growth Activities. Create What are the 3 primary projects that are most important to the development of my business? (They can be experiments, products, services, marketing content, events, etc.) Project #1 Book: The New Work Manifesto Why needed: It will provide a foundation document to focus and to clarify my message. It will provide a succinct education document to explain to people how work is

fundamentally change as we know it and how to respond to that change now to prepare for the future of work. Deliverable: Self-published ebook and based on interest, a paperback edition. Deadline: First draft by the end of March 2018. Release by Fall 2018. First action: Write summary of the 4 trends fundamentally changing work. Core habit: Writing each morning for a minimum of 3 hours. Biggest obstacle: Calls and meetings. To deal with this, I will block out all of my mornings to write. Project #2 Course Development: Possibility Accelerator Kit + Raising Social Capital Why needed: This is the core method I will use to teach people the life skills to prepare them for self-employment and the future of work. The first course: The Possibility Accelerator Kit will help people starting out or starting over to assess their potential, evaluate their possibilities and focus on an opportunity. The second course: Raising Social Capital will be designed to help people find their mentors, create a mastermind and attract their first members (customers).

Deliverable: Each course will be a minimum of 10 3 to 5 minute modules complimented by a workbook of a minimum of 5 page of exercises. Deadline: Release the first course by the end of February. First action: Create outline for The Possibility Accelerate Kit. Core habit: Create content for 2 hours each day. Biggest obstacle: Production of podcast and social media. To manage my production bandwidth, I will not batch produce both the podcast and my social media posts once a month. Project #3 Niche Masterminds Why needed: Several people have asked me to help them get their first customers or more customers. Several people starting out in their career have asked me for help understanding their self-employment options and how to assess their potential. Deliverable: Biweekly, hour-long video chat via Zoom for each topic. Deadline: Start both in January 2018. First action: Reach out to first 5 founding members of each mastermind.

Core habit: Tracking progress of each individual. Biggest obstacle: Maintaining engagement of the mastermind members. Learn What skills or knowledge do you need to acquire to advance the development of your business and yourself as a resource in your business? Learning Goal #1 How to Use MY DSLR Camera Why needed: I want to be able to shoot my own video for my courses. Learning method: Reading manuel supported by tutorials on YouTube and then asked my video expert colleagues specific questions as they arise. First action: Shoot a 1 minute video for the LSTM Mastermind using the DSLR camera. Biggest obstacle: When I ve learned a new technology in the past I can get overwhelmed and frustrated. When this happens, I need to remind myself to step away and come back at it again later or ask for help. Learning Goal #2 Learning Management System Why needed: I need to research the best delivery method of my video courses for my resources and the needs of my community.

Learning method: Research online and ask for help from others who are selling online video courses. First action: Spend 1 hour research my options by the end of December 2017. Biggest obstacle: Again, when I ve learned a new technology in the past I can get overwhelmed and frustrated. When this happens, I need to remind myself to step away and come back at it again later or ask for help. Learning Goal #3 Becoming a Better Listener + Observer Why needed: To deepen and sharpen my insights about the future of work and how to best inspire others to consider self-employment. I believe it is a core skill that will dramatically improve the quality of all my content, my relationships and the quality of my community. Learning method: I love reading, so I will probably seek out a few books first and then I d be interested in seeking out mentors or maybe a workshop/conference. First action: Find one book to read about effective listening. Biggest obstacle: I typically squeeze my learning activities around my other work habits, so I need to make time for this by scheduling this on my calendar.

Connect Who do you need to meet to help you grow your business? Mentors 1. self-awareness/mindfulness 2. basic income 3. cryptocurrency 4. economist studying the future of work. Masterminds 1. Have a sales/biz dev/marketing mastermind already. 2. Would also like a mastermind for writing. 3. Would like a mastermind for course development. Members 1. My most important members are those part of the LSTM Mastermind. 2. I would like to expand my members among college students and recent grads. 3. I would like to expand my members with employees who have a side hustle or a business idea who don t know how to get started.

Section 5: Evaluation Of My Work Activities. Organize all of your existing and projected work activities into the following categories. Eliminate Which activities are no longer valuable to the development of your business? 1. Number of trips into Washington to meet people. Limit trips to 2 days a month and book both those days solid with meetings and find just one quality networking event to attend. 2. Limit 1-on-1 calls to previously scheduled time blocks on Calendly. Delegate Who else can do this work instead of you? 1. Booking interviews on other people s podcasts. 2. Building my membership among college students/recent grads. 3. Find articles about the future of work to share on social media. 4. Create summary blog posts highlighting related podcast episodes. 5. Promoting latest podcast each week. 6. Editing and publishing of courses. 7. Scheduling of interviewee thank you and podcast release emails. 8. Building Facebook, Instagram followings.

Focus What work requires your full focus because it s the work only you are uniquely suited to accomplish? 1. Writing the book. 2. Developing the content for the courses. 3. Podcast interviews. 4. Leading masterminds. 5. Writing emails to members. 6. Answering questions about self-employment. Section 6: Guiding Intentions. Vision How would you describe the state of your business and yourself a year from now? I want to feel like I m in my groove and just refining the processes and systems of my business. I want to respond to a minimum of 500 questions about self-employment. I want to add 10,000 subscribers to my email list.

I want to be generating a minimum of $50,000/year in revenue. Feeling How do you want to feel a year from now? Validated, but excited that this is just the beginning of my life s work. Mantra When doubts and challenges arise, what will you do to get back on track? That I have a responsibility to share my experience of self-employment to inspire more people to create a new vision of work for themselves by supporting one another instead of relying on concentrations of power.
