HOW CAN WE ACHIEVE A SMOOTH SURFACE? Chemical and mechanical polishing Chemical polishing This is a way of removing metal from the surface of the jewellery by chemical reaction. Used mainly for areas that are difficult to access, as this method makes it very difficult to achieve perfect shiny surfaces Mechanical polishing: Most effective procedure with best results Surfaces of the highest quality and gloss OTEC-process 11

MASS FINISHING for jewellery and watchmaking industry DISC FINISHING MACHINES ELECTROPOLISHING MACHINES DRAG FINISHING MACHINES 12

DISC FINISHING MACHINES 13

Capacity: up to 2 kg each process container Advantages: Perfect high gloss polish Economical Inexpensive 15

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Influencing factors: A perfectly polished surface depends on the combination of these influencing factors: Type of disc finishing machine Output quality of the workpieces Kind of processing steps and sequence Type of processing media Process parameters such as speed, time etc. Carat rating of workpieces Workpiece geometry 16

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Type of disc finishing machine All the disc finishing machines have different container designs, gap designs and some adjustable parameters. Mostly this parameters makes the difference between good and perfect. Container Design Gap Systems Slowly end function Dosing unit or dosing pump difference 17

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Media There are many different media to use for grinding and polishing processes of gold & silver jewellery. Choosing the correct media is also one of the most important factors for a good result! Types of different media for jewellery finishing Plastic grinding chips Compounds Walnut shell granulates Wooden cubes and plastic polishing bodies Polishing and grinding pastes Adhesive oil 18

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Output quality of the workpieces Cast jewellery should be prepared beforehand for optimum machining results OTEC process delivers constant results therefore, the initial quality of the workpieces must all be the same. Advantages of the preparation Same output qualities Reduced process times Edges remain sharper due to the reduced process time 19

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Preparation process step by step Casting tree Cutting the sprue Magnetic polishing OTEC-process Sandpaper Removal of the sprue 20

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Process parameters Process time is the most important parameter for a good result. Too short grinding time results in high surface roughness and leaves the sandpaper lines on the surface. Too long process time will damage the jewellery by rounding the edges, cutting the prongs or removing the surface decoration on some parts Even if it does not harm the design, you lose more metal than necessary. 21

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Process parameters Speed while processing At too slow or too fast a speed, the workpieces can damage each other during the process. 22

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Process parameters Compound ratio Compound percentage is important because compound removes the waste of gold/silver and grinding media particles from the container and keeps the jewellery clean. It also provides a buffer effect between the chips and jewellery. 10 l water/compound flow per hour 10 l water/hour flow WITHOUT compound 23

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Process parameters Continuous water flow Removes the waste from the process container during the process Continuous water flow removes the abrasive particles and avoid that they are pressed into the surface. This very important for a following plating process 1 l water/compound flow per hour 10 l water/compound flow per hour 24

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Type of process + Wet grinding + + Dry grinding Dry polishing 25

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Wet process - grinding and smoothing/polishing Plastic chips gap 0,4 mm No hardening of the surface Very fine grinding possible No damaging of cubic zirconia Perfect for soft metals like gold and silver Helps to remove the waste from process container Gives a buffer effect for gentle processing Keeps precious stones safe 26

DISC FINISHING MACHINES Dry process grinding and polishing Walnut shell granules gap 0,05 mm Best polishing results Easy to handle Has 7 sizes for different purposes Can be used for polishing and for grinding Addition of grinding and polishing paste to dry media Gives the ability to grind or polish to media 27

ELECTROPOLISHING MACHINES 28

ELECTROPOLISHING MACHINES Advantage EPAG FLEX MODULAR Perfect for gold Short process times (20-30 minutes) Especially for filigree jewellery Easy handling Reduces manual work to a minimum Recovery of the gold losses by the electropolishing process by means of simple filtration, as well as deposition on the cathodes Simple and convenient extension to up to three process containers Completely cyanide-free process Work piece-specific program management system Processing of up to 40 work pieces per process container USB port for easy software updates and upgrades Filter unit for holding particles Video 29
