Gifted and Talented AIM Learning Outcomes Framework Grade: Sixth Nine Weeks: 2nd Subject: 1920s Big Ideas: (Topics/Concepts): Cultural and Technological Impacts on Society Enduring Understanding (What we want students to come to understand about the big ideas. ) To analyze the social climate in the U.S. in the 1920s To develop understanding of how Prohibition, Harlem Renaissance, and technological advances affected society in the United States in the 1920s To develop understanding of how technological advances of the 1920s impact our society today Essential Questions (Open ended to guide student inquiry and focus on uncovering big ideas. ) How did advertising and consumer culture influence the daily life of people in the 1920s? How did the Harlem Renaissance nurture and change society with its creativity? What was the impact of Prohibition on the American political system? What were the technological changes of the 1920s and the implications of those changes on society? How did advertising change consumer culture and values of this era? Learning Outcomes: Identify themes expressed in works of art and literature of the Harlem Renaissance period. Create artistic representations of the themes of the Harlem Renaissance. Analyze jazz music based on its historical context and develop a hypothesis about the effect or role of jazz in the 1920s. Understand and analyze the impact of Prohibition on society. Emphasize the influence of different points of view on issues of the era. Analyze implications of assembly line and other technological advances on American society. Make inferences about cultural values of the 1920s based on print ads. Identify assumptions made by advertisers about consumers. Essential Question: How did prohibition and technological advances affect society in the United States in the 1920s? Goals: To analyze the impact of Prohibition on the American political system. To identify technological changes of the 1920s and implications of those changes on society. Roaring Twenties Project Discussion/Overview of People and Issues from the 1920s pg. 47 Create mini-museum about a famous person from this time period. pg. 43 Project Runaway Designers create clothing for men or women using their knowledge of 1920s styles Harlem Renaissance pgs. 145-151 Introduce the Harlem Renaissance. W&M pgs. 145-148 Research artists (William H. Johnson), musicians (Duke Ellington) and writers (Langston Hughes, F. Scott Fitzgerald) from this time period. Listen to a jazz music recording. Students will write or draw their reactions to the music. Then give out the song lyrics and play it again. Ask if their reactions to the music changed. Prohibition pgs. 168-181 Introduce Prohibition by reading in the History of US Ch. 4 pgs.24-28 Analyze the Statistics of Prohibition pg.175 W&M Complete Causes and Effects of Prohibition Chart pg. 173 W&M Illegal Activities in the 1920 s pgs. 179-183 Discuss the Causes, Intended Effects and Unintended Consequences of Prohibition Lead discussion about the unintended effects of Prohibition in the 1920s, specifically, illegal alcohol sales and the mafia. W&M pgs.179-181 Create Prohibition flipbook Writer s Response: How is the current war on drugs or actions against tobacco/smoking similar or different from the Prohibition movement? Read and discuss Cars, Luckies, Junk and Other Consumables W&M pgs. 193-194 Read about Henry Ford and the Assembly Line. Model for students the Dagwood Model for persuasive writing. Take the position of someone in the 1920s and write a persuasive essay supporting or arguing against the continuation of Prohibition. Use the Dagwood Model format. Complete Gangsters, Crime and Prohibition Newspaper (see L: Drive) 1920 s Aviation InterAct Lindberg Simulation Identify the ways that changes in technological advances had effects on society by completing the Analysis Chart pg.195 Students will complete an activity using the Assembly Line format. (See pg. 186)
