Table of changes Change No. Date Scope Amdt 1 2004 Amended to update the normative reference clause and referenced standards, to update a referenced Act, to delete the modifications for electrostatic discharges and the fast transient burst test, to clarify the requirements for meters in a 230 V nominal system, and to delete the reference to the proof of compliance. Amdt 2 2015 Amended to update the reference to the basic guideline for acceptance tests and to move references to legislation to the foreword. Foreword This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS/TC 062, Electrical energy measurement and control, in accordance with procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement. This document was approved for publication in November 2015. This document cancels and replaces SANS 1799:2004 (edition 1.1). A vertical line in the margin shows where the text has been technically modified by amendment No. 2. Reference is made in 5.3.3 to "the relevant national legislation". In South Africa this means the Telecommunications Act, 1996 (Act No. 103 of 1996). Amdt 2 Reference is made in annex B to "the Regulations of the relevant national legislation". In South Africa this means the Electrical Installation Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 (Act No. 85 of 1993). Amdt 2 Annexes A and B are for information only.

Watt-hour meters AC electronic meters for active energy 1 Scope 1.1 This standard specifies requirements for newly manufactured static watt-hour meters of accuracy classes 1 and 2, for the measurement of alternating current (a.c.) electrical active energy of frequencies in the range 45 Hz to 65 Hz, and for their type tests. 1.2 It is applicable only to static watt-hour meters for indoor and outdoor use and that consist of a measuring element and one or more registers enclosed together in a meter case, and also to operation indicators and test outputs. 1.3 Where the display or one or more memories (or any combination of these) is/are external, or where other elements are enclosed in the meter case (such as maximum demand indicators, a telemetering section, time switches or remote controls), this standard is applicable to the metering section only. 1.4 This standard is not applicable to a) watt-hour meters where the voltage across the connection terminals exceeds 600 V (line-to-line voltage for meters for polyphase systems), b) portable meters, c) data interfaces to the register of the meter, d) acceptance tests and routine tests, and e) reliability, since no short-term test procedures are available that could be incorporated in type test documents to check this requirement satisfactorily. NOTE A basic guideline for acceptance tests is given in SANS 62058-11 and SANS 62058-21. Amdt 2 2 Normative references The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard. All standards are subject to revision and, since any reference to a standard is deemed to be a reference to the latest edition of that standard, parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to take steps to ensure the use of the most recent editions of the standards indicated below.
