Editor s Desk Mr. Peabody: Sherman, please set the Wayback machine to a momentous date in Lottery Collecting History May 1995. Sherman: What happened way back then, Mr. Peabody? Mr. Peabody: On that spring day, a new Global Lottery Collectors Society ticket compiler assumed the duties of reporting new scratcher tickets each month. Sherman: Wow! It s been 19 years! He must really enjoy compiling! Mr. Peabody: Yes, Sherman, he must be having a Lotto-fun. Ok, groaner puns aside, May 1995 was the month that the role of Ticket Compiler passed from Al Manuel to Ron Moermond. At that time, the highest GLCS ticket number for Colorado was 115. Before this month s update, we are at Colorado ticket number 987. Looking at the number of tickets we have on file in the entire United States (57,288) and doing some simple division it s estimated that Ron has compiled over 50,600 US tickets. This figure doesn t include the Canada tickets that he was also compiling for many years! A tip of the hat goes to Ron Moermond for his dedication to the GLCS. LOTOVENTION 2014 - I have decided to bring two large duffle bags with me. I will never forget my first Lotovention. I didn t have enough room left in my bag and suitcase to take all I wanted from the mountains of tickets on all the tables! This year I will check two big bags and pay the extra $25 baggage fee cheap shipping! Watch for changes to the lotology.net website coming soon. New sections for passive and pull-tab tickets are in progress of being added to separate these from scratchers. The artwork in the table of contents is from one of the state or Province lottery websites. Have you seen it? See you at Lotovention this summer! Gil Davis, Editor Lotologist Monthly 1

Vice President s Message Spring has finally arrived, at least according to the calendar. Of course we had a late snow here in Philly and as I write this we are getting a ton of rain. However, the real news is the 26th annual Lotovention to be held in Philadelphia the weekend of August 1, 2 and 3 rd. The hotel and convention room have been booked. It is the same great hotel we had for the 2011 Lotovention The Four Points Sheraton. The next few issues of the Lotologist Monthly and our club website lotterycollectors.com will contain all the 2014 Lotovention information you need. Look for more details on the silent auction, the display contests, and the fabulous raffle. Of course the grab tables will also be piled high with thousands of tickets. Besides all of the above, you can also expect to see and meet many of your collector friends. As always to make it successful, we need you to attend. Mark those calendars and make your hotel reservations by July 1st. Make it a real vacation as there is so much to see and do here in the City of Brotherly Love. We also need your contributions of those extra lottery tickets and raffle prizes. Please send all donations to me: Steve Gilbert 412 Rennard Street Philadelphia, PA 19116. Best regards and happy collecting, Steven Gilbert Vice - President GLCS Lotologist Monthly 2

Editor s Corner Hello again, fellow traders Some of you may find it a bit odd that I am writing my usual Editor s Corner column. The March issue was my very last at the helm as we transition to our new editor-in-chief, Gil Davis. Over the past year, you may have noticed some changes gradually taking place within our newsletter, most notably in the online edition of our publication. This has been the result of a transition which actually began years ago when Gil Davis began managing and maintaining our club website, lotterycollectors.com. Every month, as our printed copy of the Lotologist Monthly went in the mail, Gil would transfer the content to the website archive as well. As more and more members opted for online only membership, color seemed like a nice touch. As the months went by, there were actually two versions of each issue being created as I began preparing color versions of the covers and many of the other pages for the purpose of being used on the website. The way it worked for years is I would create the master copies and send the black-and-white version to our newsletter copy/mailer to take to the print shop, while the color version I would submit electronically to Gil for posting online. Gil began adding some new features to the online version such as a table of contents, page numbering, and additional photos and articles not published in the print edition. Last summer, our Vice-President Steven Gilbert took over the mailing and printing of our newsletter to the remaining members that choose to receive it that way. We started experimenting with using some of Gil s newsletter content in the printed version and the idea of basically merging the print and online editor positions started to gain traction. After all, there were two of us producing two versions of every issue meaning we were duplicating lots of effort. The one holdout from making this merger reality was the format of which Ron Moermond s instant ticket updates appeared in the newsletter. Along comes December 2013, and our biggest experiment! Rather than Steven receiving master copy from me, he would for the first time receive the entire newsletter content from Gil. I supplied the front and back covers and Gil prepared everything in-between. This explains the dramatic change in the appearance of the ticket listings in the December issue. This brings us to March, the 26th Anniversary issue and the very last issue with my editorial presence. State and Provincial lotteries are changing. Our hobby is changing. And our newsletter is changing, as our club forges ahead into the future. And so it goes. I have had the pleasure of serving at the Lotologist Monthly editor desk for a tenure spanning seventeen years with February 1997 being my first issue. Even if you subtract the three years Mary Martin served 2008-2011, my tenure was greater than half the life span of our club! (Sorry, I just had to toot my own horn). That being said, I am confident our fine publication will thrive in the capable hands of Gil Davis as he also manages our website. It has been a sometimes bumpy but always fun ride. It is my fervent hope my newfound free time may enable me to work on something, like my collection! Best of collecting to all. -Stephen Tuday #492 Lotologist Monthly 4th editor 1997-2008 6th editor 2011-2014 Lotologist Monthly 3

Passive Lottery Tickets #5 of 14 - Maryland by Steve Gilbert Maryland has issued over 12 different known Passive tickets with many varieties of several tickets. The first Maryland passive ticket was issued on May 15, 1973. It was a 50- cent ticket named TWIN WIN. Drawings were held on Thursdays on a weekly basis. There are at least 7 varieties of these tickets. The next passive ticket issued has no name. It is a 50-cent ticket and now the name TWIN WIN is gone. The design of the two tickets is very similar. Five additional 50-cent tickets were issued: Anniversary Bonuses, Summer Double Bonuses, Holiday Bonus, TV Bonus Number And 1776 Bonus Number. Another series of passive tickets was issued on October 10, 1976. These tickets were also 50c and are called Super 50 Cent. There were at least 24 different designs on white backgrounds with blue, yellow, rose, orange and green colors. Some tickets had bonus prizes of various cars such as a Jeep, Trans Am or Dodge vans. The final 50c passive game was LUCKY 50 cent. On July 4, 1974, the first $1.00 ticket was issued by called $100,000 GAME in green and black on a white background. Another new $1.00 game is called 14 for $1 that had 14 numbers in four columns. They were pink, yellow, green and orange colors. The first ones had a cartoon man s head with a top hat on the right side. There were several design changes and the man disappeared. The game changed again and was now called 17 for $1 The four columns now had 17 numbers. There were at least 19 different designs of this ticket. A new game was issued on May 7, 1980. It is called DOLLAR DOUBLER. The basic colors remained the same with again car bonus prizes. Finally, a $1.00 ticket called SURPRISE PACKAGE was issued in a sealed pouch and folded several times. The ticket has two joined halves with different prizes on each half. This game ran from May 26, 1982 to January 28, 1983. Lotologist Monthly 4
