Article 1 1minute 46 seconds 5minutes. 1. Can a player capture the opponent king? This is against the rules [1] 2. When does a player have the move? When the opponent has made his move [1] 3. Give four cases of a dead position. King versus king [1] King and bishop versus king [1] King and knight versus king [1] King and bishop versus king and bishop with bishops on the same color [1] Article 2 2minutes 11 seconds 5minutes 1. Name the two instances when the right to castle has been lost. When the king has moved [1] When a rook has moved [1] 2. Name the four instances when castling has been prevented temporarily. If the square on which the king stands is attacked [1] If the square which the king must cross is attacked [1] If the square the king must occupy is attacked [1] 6minutes 43 seconds When there are pieces between the king and the rook where you intend to castle. [1] Article 4 5minutes 16 seconds 5minutes 4. Player A calls the arbiter to the table. He says that player B is adjusting his pieces and the rules says you are not allowed to adjust the other player pieces only your own pieces. He also mentions it is player B turn to play. How would you handle the situation?

The arbiter pauses the clock. The rule says only the person whose move it is may adjust the pieces, it does not say whose pieces can be adjusted.any ones pieces can be adjusted. [1] 5. A player calls the arbiter and says to him he cannot move the pieces due to religious reasons. What do you tell the player? He must provide me with someone who can move the pieces on his behalf. That person must be acceptable to the arbiter. [1] 6. Name the three instances when a move has been made. When the captured piece has been released from the chessboard and the player having placed his own piece on the new square has released this capturing piece from his hand. [1] Article 5 Castling, when the players hand has released the rook on the square previously crossed by The king. [1] Promotion, when the players hand has released the new piece on the square of promotion And the pawn has been removed from the board. [1] 1. Name the five ways a game can end. Stalemate [1] Mutual agreement [1] Dead position [1] When a player resigns [1] Checkmate [1] Article 6 1 minutes 48 seconds 5minutes 9 minutes 06 seconds 1. Player A calls the arbiter to the chessboard. He complains that Player B makes moves in his time. What call does the arbiter make? One is allowed to move in the opponent time according to article 6.2.2 [1] 2. The following position was reached where white time ran out. The players call the arbiter to the board. What call would you make as arbiter? Is it a draw or a win for black?

It s a draw because no matter what king moves are made there are no series of legal moves that can lead to a check mate. [1] Article 7 1. Name the 4 illegal move situations. Pressing the clock before moving. [1] Pushing the pawn unto the last/first rank and pressing the clock [1] Moving the pieces incorrectly. [1] Playing with two hands (castling/ capturing/promoting). [1] 6 minutes 01 seconds 2. In the following game white completes a second illegal move by pressing the clock. The position is restored to a legal position. What is the result of the game?

Both white and black has mating material and white made the second illegal move so black wins because there exists a series of legal moves that can lead to checkmate. [1] Article 8 5 minutes 43 seconds 1. If a player has less than 5 minutes on his clock is he allowed not to record his moves? Yes if he has 4 minutes and 59 seconds on his clock he is allowed not to record the moves of the game. [1] 2. Player B calls you the arbiter to the game and informs you that Player A has not been recording his moves for 10 moves. What steps would you take to intervene? First of all the clock paused by the arbiter. When the complaining player is done with his move he must give his score sheet to his opponent. The opponent must update the score sheet in his own time and hand the score sheet back to the opponent. Article 9 1. What are the steps that a player must take to offer a draw? 16 minutes 48 seconds The player must make a move on the chess board and then ask the opponent for a draw if the opponent accepts the draw offer the game ends if it is rejected the player presses his clock. It is best to offer the draw when it is your turn.[1] 2. What are the process of claiming 50 move draw rule? First of all it must be the persons turn who are claiming the draw. The 50 move draw rule is also the offer of a draw, so we ask if the draw is accepted, if rejected we check if any pawn moves have been made or captures have taken place in the last 50 moves. It is important to remember the 50 th move must be written down in advance. Once all these requirements have been fulfilled the draw is awarded. [1] 3. How would you claim 3 fold repetition? It must be the persons turn who are claiming the 3 fold repetition draw. Three fold repetition draw rule is also the offer of a draw so if accepted the game ends if rejected the move producing the repetition must be written down in advance. The players must assist the arbiter when checking if the position has indeed repeated for three times. [1] Article 11 5 minutes 11 seconds

1. Player A calls the arbiter. He asks the arbiter to explain three fold repetition rule to him. Player B objects saying the arbiter is helping his opponent. What is your call? Show the player article 11.9 where it states that a player has the right to ask the arbiter to explain certain points in the rules. [1] 2. Player B approaches you the chief arbiter before the start of a chess tournament. He says he has a device attached to his body that pumps insulin into his body but it makes a sound every1 hour when it does that. He asks if you can allow him to wear the device? Yes you can allow him to wear the device but you cannot penalize the player because it is a medical condition that he has. Article 12 1. What are the options the arbiter have concerning penalties? Warning [1] Increasing the remaining time of the opponent.[1] Reducing the remaining time of the offending player. [1] 5 minutes 09 seconds Increasing the points scored in that game by the opponent to the maximum available for that game. [1] Reducing the points scored in the game by the offending player. [1] Declaring the game lost by the offending player. [1] A fine announced in advance. [1] Exclusion from one or more rounds. [1] Expulsion from the competition. [1] Appendix A 5. Define a rapid chess game. 6 minutes 53 seconds A rapid chess game is one where all the moves must be completed in a fixed time of more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes. [1] 6. When will the competition rules be used? One arbiter supervises at most 3 games or each game is recorded by the arbiter or his assistants and if possible by electronic means. [1]

Appendix B 7. Define a blitz chess game. 1 minutes 43 seconds A rapid chess game is one where all the moves must be completed in a fixed time of 10 minutes or less [1] 8. When will the competition rules be used? One arbiter supervises 1 game each game is recorded by the arbiter or his assistants and if possible by electronic means [1] Appendix C 2. There are four abbreviations that are optional write them down. Appendix D x = captures. [1] + = check. [1] ++ or # = checkmate. [1] e.p = captures en passant. [1] 7 minutes 39 seconds 6 minutes 35 seconds 2. When will a piece be considered touched on a visually disabled players board? When the piece has been taken out of the securing aperture. Guideline 1 6 minutes 31 seconds 2. What information shall be indicated upon the envelope when the game is adjourned? The names of the players. [1] The position immediately before the sealed move. [1] The time used by each player. [1] The name of the player who has the sealed move. [1] The number of the sealed move. [1] The offer of a draw, if the offer is current. [1] The date, time and venue of resumption of play. [1]

Guideline 11 1. Name the four castling rules for chess 960. 5 minutes 27 seconds Double-move castling: by making a move with the king and a move with the rook. [1] Transposition castling: by transposing the position of the king and the rook. [1] King-move only castling: by moving the king only. [1] Rook-move only castling: by moving the rook only. [1] Guideline 111 5 minutes 27 seconds 1. Player A calls you to the game he is under two minutes and it is his move he claims guideline 111.4. Player B informs you that there is already a 2 second increment on the clock. What is your decision? You inform player A that there is already a 2 second increment on the clock and that guideline 111.4 does not therefore apply to this event. [1] 2. In the following position white has 3 seconds on his clock. It is white turn to play. It is 60/60 game without increment. White claims guideline 111.4. What is your decision? Claiming guideline 111.4 constitutes the offer of a draw so the arbiter asks the opponent if he accepts the draw offer, if he accepts the game ends if he rejects the arbiter adds an increment of 5 seconds to each player clock. The opponent is also given an extra 2 minutes on the clock. [1]
