Watercolor Journey to France 7-Day Workshop with David R. Smith, AWS,NWS October 9th - October 15th, 2019 Join me for the experience of a lifetime as the Watercolor Journey takes us to the beautiful Dordogne region of southern France. I feel so fortunate to be returning to this beautiful region and hope you can join me. After my friend and wellknown international artist Karlyn Holman, who has enjoyed 12 trips to this location, urged me to conduct a workshop, I ended up teaching two 10-day workshops in southern France and I was absolutely amazed by the beauty and history. While visiting the region, I stopped at the Domaine du Haut Baran s to get a tour of their artist s retreat. I was impressed by the wonderfully private and peaceful setting, the beautiful landscaping, their hospitality, and the cleanliness and comfort they provided for guests. We will have round trip service to the airport, taken to amazing sites, dine on site and at local restaurants, and best of all, have a beautiful studio to work in! Accomodations: The retreat and our French home will be the quiet and relaxing Domaine du Haut Baran - immaculately clean and comfortable lodging with a well-lit and spacious studio surrounded by beautiful courtyards, secluded terraces, a large swimming pool & jacuzzi, ponds, and vignettes to paint everywhere. All rooms with en suite bathrooms and free Wifi. We will be royally looked after at Haut Baran by the warm hospitality of our hosts Rosalie and William. Check out their website at http://www.hautbaran.com/
The FOOD!!! Our host will have the best regional cuisine on our table all paired with vintage local wines from his 1500 bottle wine cellar - confit de canard with cartelized apples and pomme de terre Sarlat style, country style chicken with October seasonal vegetables and chestnuts, baked salmon with creamed baby potatoes and haricots verts, not to mention home made desserts - pot de creme au chocolate, Tarte Tatin, and Cream Brûlée!
The sites we ll visit: Experience the French countryside that has inspired artists for thousands of years. The itinerary isn t written in stone, as we need to stay flexible for factors such as the weather. However, William has suggested the following amazing painting sites: the charming village of St. Cirq la Popie (my favorite site!) high above Le Lot river in which we paint in the morning while relaxing next to the Lot river and then enjoy exploring in the afternoon, painting the Puy l Eveque old quarter reflected in the Lot River, Sarlat with it s amazing architecture, shopping, people watching, and restaurants, a visit to the new Lascaux IV prehistoric cave exhibit, the beautiful town of Monpazier (one of the most beautiful medieval villages in France), painting on the Dordogne River in LaRoque Gageac, and finally Caillau and Montcabrier to complete our amazing 7-day visit to southern France. So much to see and paint!
Creativity and Learning in an enjoyable environment: Our group will enjoy the most beautiful and inspirational sites to paint, photograph, explore, or simply relax in. Upon our return, we will have a studio full of natural light and our own tables to share and recapture our experiences with watercolor. With the small group, there will be plenty of time for individual attention as I support you on your journey by addressing your artistic goals at a pace that s comfortable for you. I m planning to pull out all the stops and share my most valuable watercolor concepts and techniques. Our time together will save you countless hours of trial & error by demonstrating approaches in an easily understood manner that will open new doors of discovery and creativity. Participants will be provided frequent demonstrations, guided practice, and step-by-step instructions through all stages of the painting process, which will include some drawing guides and reference photos. Regardless of your level of experience, whether the subject matter is a narrow St. Cirq la Popie street scene, a Misty River, or one of the Radiant Florals of the garden, you re almost guaranteed to leave with a handsome work of art, and the skills, concepts, and confidence to take your paintings to a higher level. Those who are interested in painting outdoors or en plein air will learn a systematic approach that will increase one s success and enjoyment. I will demonstrate a wide variety of techniques in the studio, including wet-on-wet," "spattering" and "spraying" methods and approaches that will keep your paintings fresh with exciting blends and textures, and keep you inspired and eager to explore your new watercolor capabilities long into the future.
Below are some of my paintings produced from past Europe trips. I can t wait to paint France with you!
