The Blue Jays are coming off a tough 10-7 loss to the eighth-ranked Stony Brook Seawolves and are seeking their first win this season over a ranked opponent. A win would would go a long way towards Hopkins case for an NCAA Tournament bid. Last Time Out Host and eighth-ranked Stony Brook rallied from a 5-2 first half deficit to defeat 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 10-7, Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 5-1 in the game s first 25 minutes and got goals from five different players as they held a three-goal lead at the half. The Seawolves answered with six straight goals in a run that began with 1:25 to play in the half. Stony Brook outscored Hopkins, 8-2, in the second half and took the lead for good with 25:25 to play. Senior Dene DiMartino led the Blue Jays with her eighth hat trick of the season, including a pair of free position goals, and controlled five draws. Senior Jenna Reifler handed out two assists and junior Caroline Federico made six saves in the cage. B1G Things Ahead After two seasons as an independent, Johns Hopkins will once again have conference affiliation as the Blue Jays have accepted membership in the Big Ten. Hopkins will begin play in the league in 2017 but faced four of its future conference opponents (Rutgers, Penn State, Ohio State, Maryland) this season. The Blue Jays spent 13 years as a member of the American Lacrosse Conference before going independent in 2015. DiMartino ranks ninth in the nation with 5.25 draws per game and is 10th among all active players in Division I in career draws. What ACL? Senior Kristen Cannon tore her ACL for the third time in the Blue Jays season-opener and missed the next six games. She returned to the field against Hofstra on March 13, just 30 days after her injury. Since Cannon returned to the field, she has totaled four goals, three assists, six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Hats Off Senior Dene DiMartino has notched 34 hat tricks in her career, with 27 of those coming since 2014. In her career, Hopkins is 26-8 when she has a hat trick, including 22-5 since 2014. That is one shy of the school single-game record and is tied for the fifth most in NCAA Division I this season. Bodden s five caused turnovers are the most by a Blue Jay since Lacey-Leigh Hentz had five against George Mason on May 3, 2003. She leads the Blue Jays and is tied for 27th in the nation with 25 caused turnovers this season. Junior Haley Schweizer is the Blue Jays active career leader with 44 caused turnovers, including eight this season, which is 18th in school Division I history. As a team, Hopkins ranks 24th in the nation with 133 caused turnovers. Poll Position Entering the week, Johns Hopkins is receiving votes in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and the Nike/Lax Magazine Poll. Seven of the Blue Jays 2016 opponents are ranked in the top 20 of the IWLCA poll, including three (Maryland, Stony Brook, Stanford) in the top 10. Against the Eagles Johns Hopkins and Boston College meet for just the second time in a series that began in 2015. The Eagles won that first meeting, 9-5, at Homewood Field on February 14. Scouting the Eagles Boston College enters Saturday s game riding a three-game win streak, including a 16-9 win over host Harvard on Wednesday night. The Eagles rank in the top 20 in the nation in draw controls (5th 14.27) and scoring offense (19th 12.47), while Sarah Mannelly leads the ACC and ranks 15th in assists (29). Mannelly leads BC in points (63) and assists (29), while ranking second in goals (34) and caused turnovers (14) and third in ground balls (23) and draws (27). Caroline Margolis ranks second with 42 points and 28 draws, and is third with 26 goals. Kate Weeks paces the offense with 37 goals and has scored at least once in 15 straight games. Kenzie Kent has made her mark since rejoining the team after leading the Eagles ice hockey team to an NCAA runner-up finish. In just seven games with the lacrosse team, she has scored 15 goals and handed out 15 assists. Molly Erdle leads the defense with 27 caused turnovers and 33 ground balls. Zoe Ochoa has started all 16 games in the cage for the Eagles and boasts a 9.95 goals against average and a.402 save percentage. 2016 Johns Hopkins Women s Lacrosse Notes Game 17 Boston College tino leads the way with a 50-game point streak, which is the third longest in school Division I history. In addition, her 42-game goal-scoring streak is the longest in school DI history. M): Has at least one point in 2 straight games Has at least one goal in 2 straight games Jenna Reifler (Sr. A): Has at least one point in 16 straight games Has at least one assist in 4 straight games Haley Schweizer (Jr. M): Has at least one point in 3 straight games Has at least one goal in 3 straight games Tewaaraton Watch List Senior Dene DiMartino and junior Haley Schweizer are among the 50 women s players named to the 2016 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, it was announced on February 23. The list includes players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse. On April 28, the field will be narrowed to 25 men s and 25 women s nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists. Five men s and five women s finalists will be announced on May 12 and invited to the 16th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington, DC, on June 2. DiMartino leads the team in points (48), goals (41) and draws (84), while Schweizer ranks second in points (35) and goals (31) and third in draws (19). On the Tube Hopkins hosted a pair of nationally-televised games on ESPNU this year against Loyola and Stanford. The Blue Jays lost both games in double overtime. For the Record 2016 marks the 41st season for Johns Hopkins, which sports an all-time record of 408-257-4 (.613) and an 190-120 (.613) record as a Division I program. Hopkins won 14 games last season, one win shy of the school Division I record. The Blue Jays have posted 31 winning seasons, including 21 straight from 1987 to 2007. Hopkins has also made 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, including five in the Division I Tournament (2004, 2005, 2007, 2014, 2015). Six for Schweizer Junior Haley Schweizer poured in six goals and seven points in the win at Rutgers on February 21. Her previous career high for points and goals in a game was three. Her six-goal outing was the most by a Blue Jay since Taylor D Amore did so against Bucknell on February 23, 2013 and is tied for the fourth most in NCAA Division I this season. Schweizer s six goals were the third most by a Blue Jay since the program went Division I in 1999. In addition, her seven points were the most since D Amore had seven versus Florida on April 5, 2014. Schweizer ranks second on the team in goals (31) and points (35). Home Sweet Home(wood) Under head coach Janine Tucker, the Blue Jays are 114-54 (.678) within the friendly confines of Homewood Field and the Jays are 21-7 (.750) at home since the start of the 2014 season. Hopkins played the last of its 10 regular season home games on April 13. Milestones The season-opening win over Marquette marked a pair of milestones for the Blue Jays as it was the 250th career win for head coach Janine Tucker and the 400th in program history. Hopkins is the 17th program in NCAA history (all divisions) to reach 400 wins. Tucker ranks 19th all-time in NCAA women s lacrosse history with 258 wins and she ranks 14th among active coaches in wins. Awards & Honors Dene DiMartino (Sr., M): Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Second Team, Tewaaraton Watch List Miranda Ibello (Fr., A/M): Inside Lacrosse Preseason Rookie Watch list Haley Schweizer (Jr., M): Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Honorable Mention, Tewaaraton Watch List Freshman Hat Trick Freshman Miranda Ibello not only scored her first career goal in the season opener against Marquette, she finished with a hat trick versus the Golden Eagles. This is the second straight year that a freshman finished with a hat trick in the same game that she scored her first career goal. Sophomore Shannon Fitzgerald turned the same trick versus George Washington on February 18, 2015. In addition, Ibello is the first freshman to notch a hat trick in her first career game since Taylor D Amore did so on February 19, 2011. She is second on the team in assists (10) and is sixth in points (18). Family Affair Athletics at Johns Hopkins is a family affair as a pair of Blue Jays have followed in their fathers footsteps at the Homewood campus while two more are following in their sister s footsteps. Junior goalie Caroline Federico is the daughter of Mike Federico 80. Mike was a three-time First Team All-American and National Goalie of the Year while helping the JHU men s lacrosse team to three straight NCAA championships (1978, 1979, 1980). Sophomore Emily Verica is the daughter of Chris Verica 87, who played football for the Blue Jays. Junior midfielder Haley Schweizer is following in the footsteps of her sister Courtney 13, who played four years for the Blue Jays. Freshman Miranda Ibello is not only following in the cleats of her sister, Paige 10, but also of her brother-in-law, Max Venker 10, who was a four-year standout on the JHU men s soccer team. The Ibellos are the 10th pair of sisters to don the Hopkins Blue & Black. Oh Captain, My Captain Senior middie Dene DiMartino and senior defender Kirsti Paavola have been selected in a vote of their teammates as captains for the 2016 season. DiMartino is serving as captain for the second straight year and is the 17th player in program history to do so. DiMartino was named to the second team while Schweizer was named honorable meniton. In addition, freshman Miranda Ibello was named to IL s Preseason Rookie Watch list. She is one of 14 freshman in the nation named to the list. At the Helm The winningest coach in program history, Janine Tucker is in her 23rd season as the head coach at Johns Hopkins. She sports a record of 258-136 (.655), including a 190-120 (.613) mark at the Division I level. Tucker took over the Blue Jay women s lacrosse program in August 1993 and coached five seasons in Division III before successfully guiding the program s transition to Division I in 1999. A 1989 graduate of Loyola (MD) and a member of the Greyhound Athletic Hall of Fame, Tucker has led the Blue Jays to double-digit win totals in 18 of her 22 years on the bench. She has also guided Hopkins to five NCAA Division I Tournament appearances, three ECAC Division I championship games, and four NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
