A culture of care and concern gives TFS the edge Total Facility Solutions (TFS) provides turnkey solutions that are designed to deliver process-critical infrastructure for semiconductor, life science, renewable energy and science and research installations. The business was established in 2003 and has experienced rapid growth from day one. Today, the business has eight offices located across the US, with plans to continue to expand around the US and evaluate opportunities in Canada, Mexico, and Central/ South America. TFS has experienced a lot of growth owing to its market share of the semiconductor sector, however it s recognising a lot of opportunity in the life science field both in biotechnology and pharmaceutical development. With a diverse product offering and the ability to adapt to different companies requirements, TFS is in a strong position for even greater growth. As President Joe Cestari explains, We have been tracking a number of trends in the life science sector such as small volume biologics, parenterals, disposables, pandemic disease treatment and fractionation. We see a significant increase in US-based investments in these areas, which is driving new infrastructure construction. Growth and opportunity in this sector is a catalyst behind our geographical expansion. The company has expanded its presence in New York and recently opened a new office in Arizona. It has also acquired additional office space in Austin, Texas and North Carolina in order to be within close proximity of the biopharmaceutical market. It s clear that the firm is willing and able to relocate for business opportunities and to be closer to its clients. In fact, Cestari went as far to say that the company s strategy in general was to go anywhere where there is a combination of both short-term and long-term investment in our target market segments. He also says, however, that TFS isn t interested in oneand-done projects but is more focused on becoming part of its customers operational fabric. For us it s a long-term commitment and not just about going to execute a project and leaving. We have an onsite presence with every one of our customers and that gives us a huge advantage, says Cestari. As well as dedicating time to its clients, TFS is also committed to becoming part of the communities in which it operates. We like to get involved in community outreach, charity work and helping to build the workforce and enhance the quality of life everywhere we have a presence, he says. Care and concern At the heart of everything, TFS is committed to providing a safe working environment for its employees and customers alike. Just under two years ago the company started an initiative of care and concern for others, which kicked off as a formal Incident & Injury Free (IIF) program with emphasis on employee welfare. However, the incentive actually ended up building a culture whereby everybody looks out for one another; where everyone takes care of their peers and others working around them. Owing to its success, TFS decided to take this initiative and benchmark it as the cultural platform for the business. A lot of companies talk about a family environment, but we really do practice what we preach, says Cestari. We demonstrate a genuine care and concern for our people and that has paid dividends over the years. As part of its IIF program, the company has also rolled out some 4 5

Developing a lean supply chain At TFS, the supply chain refers to total demand and delivery. For us, our entire business is a supply chain, says Cestari. At the present moment, the company is going through a total process evaluation and looking at how systems can be improved to drive efficiency and cost saving at every stage of the business. We are looking at everything, from how we generate documentation from client specifications and how we transfer those specifications to our materials suppliers; how we handle our logistics and delivery itinerary; how and when we fabricate the materials and eventually pass them onto our customers. Of course we also have to consider certification and on-going service. We are overhauling the entire supply chain with the view of optimising every section, he says. A culture of care and concern gives TFS the edge STATISTICS Industry: Construction, high-tech, semiconductor, renewable energy, life science, research and development Founded: 2003 Headquarters: Plano, Texas TFS is also focused on the convergence of technology and construction in order to drive cost savings. They use a lot of software originally developed for the automotive industry to implement things like automated tracking. We have a number of platforms that we are customising for our business requirements and our clients and applying a lot of lean manufacturing principles through software and automation, says Cestari. Continuing growth and development At TFS, the ultimate goal is to become more profitable and to develop a larger client base as well as a broader geographical footprint, however, Cestari is adamant this will not be achieved by compromising on quality or safety, because as he concedes: Operational success, meeting schedules, meeting budgets, being safe, delivering a quality product is our best sales patter. At the end of the day, performance sells better than anything else. We are in a fortunate position because we have invested in recruitment and training and have spent the time to develop our internal processes and systems we have also been selective when it comes to pursuing business opportunities. Our success is a product of our past execution, and that is our greatest selling tool. In the next five years, TFS has ambitious plans to become a half a billion-dollar company. Cestari is confident the business will have a broader presence throughout the US and North America and will be actively pursuing opportunities in other sectors and emerging markets. With its emphasis on safety and people management, exceptionally low turn over rates and a solid strategic management plan, TFS is well placed to achieve its targets.
