ELEMENTS OF CIVIL ENGINEERING (110004) MARKS DISTRIBUTION AND IMPORTANT QUESTIONS OF ALL THE UNITS Unit-1 SCOPE OF CIVIL ENGINEERING One or two Questions are generally asked from this Unit the weightage of marks varies from 5 to 7 marks. Important Questions: Q1) Enlist and Explain various branches of Civil Engineering. *** Q2) Discuss the role of Civil Engineers. *** Q3) Discuss the Impact of Infrastructural Development on the economy of the country. **** Q4) Explain the importance of Planning, scheduling and construction management in construction activities. ***

UNIT-2 SURVEYING This unit is the soul of the subject, carrying maximum weightage The total weightage of this unit varies from 32 to 36 marks i.e. nearly 50 % of the total marks IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Q1) what is surveying? What are its objects and application? Explain its primary divisions. **** Q2) Differentiate between plain surveying and geodetic surveying. Q3) Explain the fundamental principles of Surveying. List the modern tools used for surveying and mapping. **** Q4) what is meant by local attraction? How it is detected? How is the observed bearing corrected for local attraction? *** Q5) describe the characteristics of contour and also explain the uses of contour maps. *** Q6) enumerate various tape corrections and explain any two in detail. *** Q7) Explain various types of Leveling. ** Q8) Explain reciprocal Leveling*** Q9) Differentiation between HI and Rise and fall Method** Q10) Explain Modern tools of surveying i.e. Remote sensing, GIS, GPS. *** Q11) Explain various methods and formulae to compute area and volume. **

Besides this 1 theory question is asked to draw a neat sketch of any surveying instrument explaining its component parts. Instruments which can be asked are as follows: *** Prismatic compass Chain Prism square Dumpy level and theodolite At least 3 examples are asked from this unit each carrying 5 to 7 marks The examples of Chain surveying**, Compass Surveying***, Tape correction **and Leveling**** are asked with certainty, besides this examples of planimeter and area computation are asked rarely. Examples on leveling are a certainty. 1 question is based on various definitions of surveying and leveling Some general definitions which can be asked are as follows: Surveying, Leveling, Geodetic surveying, Datum, Mean sea level, Ranging, Reciprocal leveling, Bearing, WCB, RB, Bench marks **

UNIT -3 CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS 2 questions are generally asked and the weightage of this unit varies from 7 to 10 marks. Out of various construction materials give due weightage to following materials. (Stone, Cement, Concrete, Bricks, Timber, and paints and varnishes.)*** IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Q1) Discuss various construction material used in civil engineering**** Q2) Explain the requirement, type and uses of bricks. *** Q3) Explain various types of cement commonly available. ** Q4) Explain various ingredients of concrete. ** Q5) Explain various forms of timber. Give qualities of good timber. **

UNIT-4 ELEMENTS OF BUILDING CONSTRUCTION This unit is carrying weightage of 11 to 14 marks. IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Q1) Enlist and Explain various principles of Building Planning. **** Q2) Draw a detailed sketch of C/s of a wall showing the components of the building. ** Q3) Give Classification of building based on occupancy and structures. *** Q4) Describe different types of loads acting on a building. ** Q5) Explain common building components. *** Besides this a question can be asked to draw a detailed Plan or Section by viewing a line plan and to prepare schedule of doors and window. ** If only plan is asked the question will be of 7 marks and if both plan and section or elevation is asked the question will be of 14 marks.

UNIT-5 WATER RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT 2 questions are generally asked from this unit. This unit is carrying weightage of 11 to 14 marks IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Q1) Explain with neat sketch hydrological cycle*** Q2) Define watershed and explain steps involved in its development. **** Q3) Explain various characteristics of watershed development**** Q4) Define Hydrograph and give its application*** Q5) what do you mean by flood routing? ** Q6) Discuss Water Conservation*** Q7) what is a hydraulic structure? Classify them briefly. ** Q8) what are various canal regulatory works** Q9) Describe water conveyance System**

UNIT-6 TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING Weightage varies from 10 to 14 marks Important Questions: Q1) Explain the role of transportation in National development. **** Q2) what are different modes of transportation? Discuss the characteristics features of different modes of transportation. **** Q3) explain various aids and devices used to control, regulate and guide traffic. *** Q4) Define Traffic signals with sketch. Enlist various types of signals. Also give the advantages and disadvantages of traffic signal. *** Q5) Explain with the help of neat sketch components of road pavement. ** WITH BEST WISHES G.H.TANDON
